Television Tho Prop Grops Throps

If Owens sold more merch he'd be at the top. His value is still pretty high, he's ridiculously good. Owens is the guy that can work with anyone and give them a 5* match. There's a reason HHH has him in high regard and why Austin came out of retirement for him.

But it's ultimately it's a business and Cody appeals more to the kids. I don't think many reasonable adult followers think Cody is good enough to warrant the run he's had. Cody is fine in the ring but he's a charisma vacuum and pretty boring in almost all other aspects.

They're doing the same push with Jey Uso because the yeet merch is going like hot cakes.

Of course merchandise matters and appeal across the world. I don’t need to hate on Owen’s to put Cody over. Owen’s is brilliant at what he does but like I said, there’s a reason he’s not holding the main title during a period when they have the talent that they do and again, he doesn’t really need to.

No adult believes Cody warrants his run? Come on, stop being silly. This guy has the fans on his side against The Rock ffs. He’s made that Cena heel turn absolutely incredible because he’s that good of a baby face. He done an outstanding run against Reigns in their story. The fans went crazy when they tried to do Rock/Reigns because they wanted Cody to be the one to take the title off of Reigns.

If you don’t like Cody that’s absolutely fine, it’s all a matter of opinion but it’s silly to try to say others don’t when it’s quite clear he’s one of the most over wrestlers on the planet right now who sells an insane amount of merchandise and is basically the face of the company right now. A boring, no charisma and talentless person doesn’t manage what Cody Rhodes has managed in his WWE run. In fact it’s absolutely bizarre to say Cody has no charisma yet is the draw and sell that he has been over the last few years, it actually makes no sense what so ever and you’ll struggle to name anybody over the years that has sold on that level and got as over as he has without charisma for the period of time that he has. Let’s be sensible and not let the dislike of somebody cloud judgement on them.

I wonder what his ‘look’ will be? Will he start rocking this Hollywood look or will it be the same but a villain version.

When he announced he was in the rumble it was such a corny promo. It was all geared up to this turn. He was ultra family friendly.
This and a lot of other recent promos and matches. He was definitely being extra corny.

I hear what you're saying but Cody rode on his father's coat tails for "finishing the story", and that's what the fans were getting behind. Moreover it was also a notably boring run which a large section (ie the others who didn't rate Cody) saw coming.

Claiming he put Cena over on the heel turn is outrageous. Cena could have had a heel turn on literally any face in the company and the audience would eat it up. We've waited over a decade for this, theorising how great a heel Cena would be. When he did it, it felt exciting because HE was finally heel, not because it was Cody got slapped up in the ring.

Cody is a solid worker and a nice guy but that's where it ends. He needs to be carried in almost every fued, whether it's having upper B class wrestlers in the roster come in and prop up a rivalry or being carried by the charismatic all rounders like KO. He cannot carry a single rivalry without looking boring in the run, be it Aj Styles or Logan Paul.

If you look at the single match rivalries, he's not done anything remotely interesting and relies on the persona of who he's fighting against. Solos one was all about Bloodline 2.0, KO was all about breaking that friendship and him parading with the retro title to wind cody up. There's nothing fun about Cody and he should be capable of generating baby face interest while he's got the championship but he doesn't. He doesn't do what top babyfaces in the past did and you can see he's sinking in the role.

Fun event overall. Loved the way Jade decimated Naomi, Liv has massively improved over the last 18 month and for me is the best in the division at the moment. KO/Sami was excellent as you’d expect from those two.

Finally pulled the trigger on Cena, will be interesting to see how events unfold but with his retirement already announced it’s gonna be a fairly quick turnaround.

I think Alexa kinda stood out as a bit of a sore thumb in the women's match. Her work-rate is way below that of the rest of the women in that match.

Liv especially has come on massively... I used to put her and Alexa in the same bracket, but she's miles ahead now.

I can't speak for wrestling ability but I do know a few things about acting. Cody is an abysmal actor from what i've seen so far. John Cena is also over-acting a lot. Maybe this'll change as heel but I can't see it working personally (hope I'm wrong though).

Kevin/Zayn performances were brilliant. I believed everything in the build up and in the fight.
John Cena is brilliant in the Peacemaker series though.

Cody being carried is a new one

Some really silly opinions in this thread. Cody was a fantastic coup for WWE and has put on some great matches. And is very entertaining. The road to mania last year and this wouldn't be the same without him there. Reckon Rock loves working with him, for example. And Cena wanted to work with him for his last run.

Any news on Raw tonight? I'm strongly guessing that Cena, Rhodes and Rock won't be there as they'll want to build anticipation. But is anything else advertised?

They'll surely want to sort Reigns' path soon.

Cena has overacted his entire wrestling career but wrestling is panto. You're supposed to overact. You're not getting Daniel Day Lewis subtlety in a wrestling promo or facial expression and who needs to act properly if you can get reactions like this?

"John, brah, you're making kids cry, brah!"

I can't laugh at this anymore, my 6 year old was in tears too!

Yeah but Cena is especially cringe at overacting and takes it too far (most recent example being the Royal Rumble where he was his usual goofy self).

He was excellent in his heel turn though!

Agreed with Alexa. She has a lot going for her until she gets in the ring where it just doesn't translate as well. Let's see how she is a few months down the line though. I'm not sure what role they will carve for her though.

Again, Liv is probably my favourite wrestler to watch currently.

Liv Rhea Bianca and Iyo are all great, the best four women they have (on the main roster)

This is specifically what I was referring to. It was horrendous to watch. But if that's his character then yeah, whatever, it's just not for me.

Welcome to the real world Kiddo!

Definitely didn’t say he put Cena over on the heel turn. They all played it brilliantly, from Rock to Cena to Cody. There’s a reason they’ve done this heel turn on Cody, because he’s the biggest baby face the company has and the number one guy at the top of the company. To believe that would have had the same impact on any face in the company just isn’t right let’s be real. That entire heel turn isn’t the same without the Cody and Rock story behind it, simple.

The rest is pointless arguing anymore as you clearly can’t stand him and you’re letting that cloud your judgement. A guy who has and is topping the most merchandise sold by anybody in the company at a time that they have Punk, Reigns, Cena, Rock, Rollins, Jey etc and being the most over star on the roster is him sinking? Come on it’s madness and surely you can’t even believe what you’re saying. Somebody without charisma who is sinking never ever gets to the level that Rhodes has been at and still is it. Don’t like him or his style, that’s honestly fair and completely up to you but the stuff you’re coming out with is factually wrong mate at times.

Your argument is a bit funny. You're saying Cody is great because he played a part. My point is anyone could be the baby face in that ring and it would have looked awesome, because it was Cena turning heel, not Cody getting beat up.

And yes thanks for agreeing with my point - Cody is sells merch he's good with kids which is a massive factor. As a performer though he's terribly boring, and most adults would see that.

I personally never got why he had the push when Rock returned, but it was obviously because of the finish the story momentum. A bit of a yes movement if you will, except his movement is actually his father's and has feck all to do with him. It's little surprise he hasn't done a single remotely interesting segment during his wwe title run. Every angle he has is highlights from the other guy, as illustrated.

Watched the Cena segment another few rimes today it’s just fecking epic television. From the ‘Go feck Yourself!’ to Cena’s face whilst hugging Cody it’s too good

Legendary moment that

Some absolutely trash posting there @VP89

Well done !

Adults don’t like Cody Rhodes and kids only like him and people only wanted him champ because of Dusty Rhodes, who hasn’t wrestled in WWE since about 1922.

No I think at first there was a big momentum for him by adults and children alike, because of the "finish the story" angle. Kids need not be alive to know what the narrative is since it was pretty much pitched by the commentators and the promos. I was part of the segment that still didn't rate him, but it was clear a wide demographic wanted him to "finish the story".

Since that point however, Cody has been incredibly boring and there's been a general indifference about what he does. He'll top the merch guy, and it tends to be hard not to when you're the face of the company (unless its a Jinder Mahal situation), but my point is he's incredibly vanilla and struggled to really carry the championship with enough intrigue.

Can you point to many instances where he's done or said anything interesting? Had any fun gimmick, any funny joke, done any rule-breaking anti-hero style play? It's probably just one or two over the course of the year. He's not interesting and he never has been - the most intrigue he had was when he was riding on his father's coat tails for winning the big prize at Wrestlemania, since that point he's had to be carried in every feud he's had.

Everyone knows Owens is great but the idea of him in Cody’s spot is insane
