This is what football looked like in 1958 (feat. Di Stefano, Kubala and Fontaine)

2 things.

1. You haven’t watched the vid

2. I bet you’d move differently on pitches like those.
Quagmire pitches. You really can't compare eras. No way are modern football playing Pep-ball on those pitches. Denis Law said he and his teammates used to chip the ball to each other because it was pointless trying to pass on boggy pitches.

A lot of younger fans, teens, early 20's just have no perspective yet due to their age. Of course the game has evolved but you often hear things like that a player from 2010 couldn't hack it now or a 90's player would get found out. The problem with that is that the game crosses generations, Pele played in the same era as Bryan Robson, who played with Giggs, who at 37/38 was playing against (and toying with) players who are still playing now.

Yeah, it’s really a standout for me when I watch the majority of old games; even the best pitches are divot-laden, muddy and so uneven that we’d be terrified for our players getting injured playing on them if fast-forwarded to now. You can’t zip the ball about when it can barely roll on a surface and you definitely cannot run non-stop for 90 minutes when the pitch itself is draining your stamina like mad!

These factors get ignored and the game gets compared like for like when I think it’s the biggest extreme of all, with the kit, boots and ball following up.

I still believe that if two games were played, one with old boots, kit, ball and godawful pitch and one under modern conditions, the legs would end up a game a piece between the older eras and the new.
