This is England '88

Cannot wait. Top Boy a few weeks ago, now this. Quality.

Woody is going to kill Milky.

Or something equally horrible.

I'd probably cry if that happens.

If he was going to kill Milky, he'd have done it straight away, not 2 years later. From the synopsis, he has a new GF anyways.

To be fair, Milky fecked him over good and proper.

From what I saw of the trailer, seems like Woody is going through some serious shit.

But I just meant it along the lines of Meadows breaking hearts so damn well.

I swear the song played when Shaun was in the bedroom with the last is fairly modern?

Building slowly.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman was the eighties Hal.

Thanks, figured why i thought it was quite modern. Cause it was covered by that guy from Britains got talent.

I think relationships are taking a more prominent role in this series, or will do, which is true because as they get older relationships become a more engaging part of their lives just naturally. I foresee Woody with Lol again by the end. and Smell will be on her jack-jones.

It's slow burning and all about the characters, but they're so fully formed and real it's fascinating. The film has the better story by the shows are much richer. Meadows really knows these people and it shows. Even when nothing happens (and for a lot of this episode, nothing happens) it's still a joy to watch for me. Plus Vicky McClure is a wonderful actress. Good music too. Nice bit of Wendy Rene at the end.

I think holdsteady might actually be on the right track, there's at least going to be a showdown between Woody & Milky.

I'm not sure what people expect, all guns-blazing action or just a solid drama, which is what This Is England has always been. Meadows is brilliant, the characters are great, it's just superbly done. Yeah, Woody especially is teetering on the edge, as evidenced in the office scene, then the scene where he's looking in the club.

Well exactly. It will eventually get super dramatic (both the film & 86 did) but to start with you need the slow build up (well you don't, but if you want it to be good you do) to get back into the scene with these characters. Who are all so perfectly formed and played...Gilgun is also a natural sympathetic presence. You can't help but like Woody. And you only really know he's teetering because he plays it so well. The spitting at the window was a nice touch.

Agreed, one of my many great talents is being able to copy Woody's accent. But as you say, you can't help but feel for Woody, or atleast think he's just a decent bloke who got himself caught up. I assume this will be the last of the show aswell, I can't see them taking it into the 90's.

This Is England '90 is already due to be released in 2012

Oh, just read that '90 will be the final chapter in This Is England.

Ah, probably fitting to end the series with the end of the 80's so it makes sense on that level.

I cant feel any sympathy for Lol. I know she went through hell with her dad and she is now a single parent with not much going for her, but she just annoys me. She fecked Woody over and now she's paying the price. There's your bed, love, now lie in it.

Yeah it's strange, I seem to side with Woody more also.

I don't think there's any "siding" to be done. Obviously Woody's been fecked over and naturally the sympathy's with him (he also seems to be the only hard working pro-active member of the group) but it's not one or the other. Though I agree lol did act the bitch (mitigating circumstances permitting) in the last one as it was never like Woody wasn't anything but doting to a fault. If anything Milky's the one with the most comeuppance to get. It also helps (or doesn't, which ever way you look at it) that lol is a very depressive character and Milky's a bit meh, whilst Woody is naturally likeable and outgoing.

That's the point though isn't it? You get really involved because they all feel so real.

Random diversion, but since we're a United football forum, a couple of clips of Turgoose's original interview (United fan - 0.55) and his appearance on Soccer am where he scores the Way to Wembley car park challenge (twice!) and admits to drawing a cock on a picture of Orlando Bloom.

He's a fecking little legend.

Lol seems to feel like she deserves all this hell now, which is actually a reaction of many victims to the horrible circumstances they went through. It's become some sort of crude penance she's doing to make up for her rape and her cheating.

I'm now waiting for the entrance of Combo, which hopefully will happen tonight, because waiting for his crazy fecking ass until tomorrow is just going to make it all the worse.

With only one more episode to go I'm wondering what sort of move Shane is going to pull. He must be planning something shocking? Right? I mean that's what he does.

Maybe this series isn't going to have that 'explosive' ending of the last... I love watching the characters just be themselves though. Combo and Lol was a fantastic scene, as well as everything with Woody in... the 'work banter' moments were gold!

I wouldn't want him to tack on a shocking ending for the sake of it, it could very well be that, with '90 commissioned, this is just a linking stop gap to get from the chaos of 86 to a better place to end on in '90.

My only concern with this ep was that it was just a bit of a re-tred of the last one. Whilst it's always interesting watching these characters be themselves and what not, we didn't really get much more out of them than we did last night, Combo aside of course.

Anyway, I'm being over critical, it's a lovingly made and interesting piece all the same.

It's set up for Woody to go off.

Lol has at least begun to right some wrongs. She has Trev and Kelly, Milk and Combo are back now (also their scene was terrific).

But it's Woody who has now dug his grave. We all know he's not happy and he's selling out everything he's believed in for a boring life with Jenny. He has no one to turn to except Squires who he has nothing in common with and he's even wearing shit suits now. Come on Woods.

I think you could be right, but i'd hate him to exit pre-This is England 90.

I do get the feeling that this is used as more of an update to their lives and circumstance before a climactic send off in the "90" set of episodes, which I think Meadows has confirmed will be the last.

On a sidenote, is it just me or has Shaun's crazy eye got worse as he has got older?

I watched the first 30 minutes of this tonight/this morning, and it's top class, as I always expect from Shane Meadows, who is a true gem for Britain, not just right now, but will go down as one of the best we've ever had when his career is all said and done. He's so perfectly in his zone with these characters and their lives that it's incredibly compelling whatever they are doing.

For the time being though, I'm going to wait until I can get the time to watch them all in one like I did with 86, seems better that way.

I think that's a bit unfair on Woody. He's certainly cuckolded and domesticated before his time, but he's also the only one of the gang (apart from Milky) who isn't a complete loser. I don't see why having a job and not sitting around the pub all day playing pool should be selling out. It's growing up.

Though obviously by trying to make a fresh start, he's gone a bit too far.

The first half hour, with Lol taking to the nurse and Combo was excellent, really well done. Shaun's a bit of a idiot, just man up and break up early. Though i'd struggle to act if my mates were there. Woody is just hilarious, never fails to make me laugh.
