Things you really hate about the football/modern game

The ridiculous wages in modern football is something I dearly hate and is a great concern for the sport, imo.

Defensive filming is annoying as feck, and they always get away with it; defenders who throw themselves to the ground to avoid losing the ball is a disgrace - it happens all the time these days.

Faking injury to get other players sent off; should be a retrospective five match ban at the very least - pathetic!

Which players, if I may ask?

Different times back then though.

My one buddy's pretty infatuated with CR7. He can't believe anyone could think Messi's a better player (not to start this debate again). Like it's the "most ridiculous" idea in the world.

My Grandad used to go to City one week, United the next. Said he loved watching Georgie Best.

Then he started following Stanley Matthews.

But things I actually hate about football is pretty low. I love most of it. Love nothing more than going to United with my mates, having a few beers and cheering the lads on. Or watching the games at home with my old man. The level of skill, excitement and drama will never dim while it's just 11 v 11 on the pitch. It's the off the field stuff that sometimes annoys you the most.

George Best, then Martin Buchan from my home town. I dont think things are really that much different then to now. The players back then were all household names and superstars of the time.

Oh, and twitter. I absolutely positively do not give a single solitary shit what some sad twat in their basement has to say about football transfers. I care even less about what the players have to say as well.

Watching them train at The Cliff
Taking pictures with the players before a game as they walked from the car-park to OT
Standing at OT
Players weren´t overpaid primadonnas
Diving weren´t common and players didn´t roll around for hours after a slight kick on the shin
Didn´t cost a fortune going to games
Etc Etc
Most things were better when I was growing up, but I still love going to Old Trafford and I will always love it

The attempts to use stats in football as per american sports.

By and large american sports are static single shot set pieces exploding in a set play whereas football is fluid and continuous the ball being in play for much longer periods.

Where no knowledge exists stats step in.

Do you mean when they obstruct the attackers when the ball is about to go out of play ? If so I have never understood why that's not a foul

The idea is that you can get away with it when the ball is within your playing distance. I think it's different when there's no intention to play the ball. The main thing though is the automatic award of a free-kick for any defender who receives even the most minimal pressure in that kind of situation. It's lazy refereeing.

Maybe I'm seeing things from a naive POV but it annoys me all the time specially when the ball is so slow to go out, it can be ridiculous to see two players pushing and pulling each other like that. The bit about lazy refereeing is spot on and I'd also add when keepers go for an aerial challenge, sometimes for absolutely nothing the ref gives a foul for them. It is too evident in the Ligue 1 that I watch, in the PL it's much better.

The term neutral, because when it comes to us United fans and Man United, there's no such thing.

I'm starting to really dislike the transfer windows. I think twitter is playing a big part in this, all these rumours that come out about player x wanting to join or not wanting to join. It's frustrating because you simply don't know what to believe.

That's annoying as feck as well. One thing is when the defender is standing in a straight line preventing the attacker from running through him, but when the defender moves away from the ball with a distance of ten feet to prevent the attacker from running around the defender, then it should be a blatant foul, but it's always given the other way.

What I was talking about is when defenders throw themselves to the ground when they realise they are outpaced our outmuscled. I remember Assou-Ekotto doing it against United on a clear one on one with the goalie. He slipped a little, made a mistake, scrambled into the path of the attacker and fell to the ground without any contact. It happens a lot really, and it seems like a new thing altogether for me. It's a clear one on one duel and they fake a tackle or whatever, goes to the ground like Suarez and faints an injury...

My favourites as a kid as well.

The difference now is the internet and 24 hour news channels - just too easy to indulge the enthusiasm. I had to make-do with posters on the wall and a match on Saturday.

Used to love going to the Cliff. It makes me chuckle now when I think of how primitive those training sessions were back then compared to how they run them now.

Heinze used to drive me mad with that stuff and he was a fan favourite. Baffling. I think some fans suffer from the delusion that it's only forwards who dive.

Transfer fees and wages being high for bog average players.
The damage to the game that sugar daddy clubs have done.
Twitter transfer rumors.
Players falling down at a slight breeze.

He was an awful player in that respect - elbowed pretty much everyone, but I can't recall his "defensive-diving", but you are probably right.

To be fair his favourite trick was fouling the forward and then collapsing to the ground and writhing in "agony" in the hope of confusing the ref about intent, but he had also mastered the art of going down under unexpected sniper fire if a player was about to outrun him.

Not a big fan of Heinze? :D
Agree with you, I do.

24 hour coverage with newspapers making up stories all the time when they really haven't got a clue.

hahahaha thats exactly how I became a Utd fan, doing that because of George Best

Damn you Stack  You hellbent on destroying my pet peevs!

Jokes mate.

On a side note. If Best left United after say, 2/3 years of you supporting them, would you have gone on to support his new side?

In all honesty Im not sure. I was just a kid and I may have followed him but I had by the end of the first season bought the scarf, flag (yes I know) and fanzines.
I always liked Gordon Strachan, he was also from my home town and despite being a little shit stirrer and the fact he went to leeds I still enjoyed watching him play after he left Utd for our mortal enemies.

The way players swear and dispute everything with a bitter and angry face. Constant cheating, looking for any small gain.

Those same faces coming back from the crowd at every corner.

I don't get fans who are shouting until they are red faced at players taking a corner, calm the feck down! I've never done that.

This has probably been said a few times , but defenders wrestling people in the box is beyond a joke and really winds me up. How on earth a rugby tackle is acceptable just because it's in the box is beyond me, and what makes matters worse is that the referee is always poking directly at it, so they've either been told by the peers that be to ignore it, or they're just useless - both of which are pathetic.

A lot of people seem to have an issue with the 'shenanigans' that goes on before corners. It's just part of the game and always has been. There's a lot of players in a small area waiting for the ball to come in with a decent chance of a goal-scoring opportunity. The rules have to be relaxed somewhat.

I enjoy it when I'm playing on a Sunday morning. When I'm a defender I don't look at the ball at all. I'm on the man all the time, disrupting his run or getting in his way if he's jumping for the header. It's also enjoyable being an attacker with a defender stuck to you and trying to lose him by outsmarting him. It's a duel of the marked and un-marked.

Singling out one player as a scape goat when the team fails to win, it's a team game so the whole team should be blamed.

Too much social media in the game too.

All this playing acting and simulation is pathetic.

The game is fast becoming too technological, things like goal line technology and Sepp Blatters idea of challenging a referee decision during the game, will end up killing the game. After all human error keeps it exciting, I know we all hate it when match officials get decisions wrong but the human error has helped make the game what it is.

Taking the ball into the corner flag- It's time wasting! How come when the keeper idles over a goal kick he gets a yellow for time wasting but those clever-arse players that take the ball to the corner and put their foot on it get away with it? The fans have paid their hard earned money to see football and this tactic is pissing on them.

Also speaking of hard earned money, could somebody please get rid of the Glazers.

There was a right pack of subhuman organisms doing against United when we played Palace at Selhurst, they honestly looked like they had never been fed.

Players crowding around referees once he's made a decision be it correct or not. The ref is hardly going to change his decision. Rugby respect referees so better than footballers.

Er, because the two things are entirely different? Taking a goal kick, the ball is dead. A player dribbling it into the corner, the ball is live and game continues; the player can do whatever the hell he wants with it.
