Yes. Pretty sure someone did the same with another player and Sky Sports thought it was real. For some reason I'm thinking of Moyes unveiling Tiago at his first press conference like a WWE heel.
 
The ref that put on a Barcelona kit for a picture during a local newspaper interview shortly before we was supposed to be a linesman in the Barcelona-Arsenal Champions League final.

He actually owned a store that sold sports equipment and popular football kits. So when a reporter from a smaller local paper came to interview him about this mission at his daily job, they thought it would be suited to put on that kit. He did not get to be the ref in that final.

After his first season as Real he carried a knee injury into the World Cup in 2010. In preseason it still wasn't right and the doctors were apparently worried it would end his career. He had to have surgery on it, which kept him out for 8 months.

I think he lost his pace after that and was never quite the same player.

When Clattenberg retired and did a bunch of interviews where he openly admitted he used to deliberately get decisions wrong or referee games with an agenda rather than according to the rules, giving specific examples that could be easily corroborated by his inexplicable, shite refereeing in said games, and there was no investigation into him openly admitting he was a corrupt premier league referee or whether others might be the same, and everyone still thought the idea of referees doing this was ridiculous.

Then when Mike Dean retired and openly admitted in interviews that he deliberately got decisions wrong for reasons like not wanting to upset his mates, and still barely an eyelid got batted, and yet eveyrone is constantly baffled why the officiating is consistently so terrible in the same league where the officials are allowed to just make things up as they go along based on what they want to happen, and then admit it, and then absolutely nothing is done about it. And meanwhile Mike Dean is now employed as a pundit for Sky where he further demonstrates the mentality of Premier League officials by just completely changing his mind about decisions mid sentence to defend his mates.
