I dont see how things could have changed if it was the 2014 WC all along that was his top most priority. Whether or not Xavi ages beautifully like wine, he's not going to be pushed out of the Barca 11 by Thiago. With Neymar coming in, Iniesta moving to the middle will further increase the competition for places. So if he wants to be a part of the 2014 Spain WC squad, he has to move clubs. Bayern can be ruled out for similar reasons. Whether or not he pushes someone out from their CM long term, its this year's performance which will decide his place in the squad or not.
So if he's still hell bent on making that squad and wants to move for that reason, even if talks do drag on, he should make the switch.
Personally, I dont see Barca offering him a lucrative new contract again anyways after he was given one just last year. A very bad precedent to set specially for a club that banks so heavily on its youth for its first team.

I'm beginning to wonder if we'll actually hear anything about this now. Thiago has been in Barcelona for a number of days now (at least since the I love Barcelona pic) and he still hasn't spoke with Barca about it. Perhaps he's just going to crack on and act like he never intended to leave. If he's staying then he doesn't exactly have to speak to Barca does he.
Well his holidays only actually finished yesterday and we don't know if he's told them anything yet, do we?
I'm not convinced about this 'holiday' though. Barca are talking as if he's not away by saying he hasn't spoke to them. Plus he's posted pics of him in Barcelona over the last few days whilst he's supposed to be away on this apparent holiday. I think he's been there since the end of last week by the looks of it and he still hasn't spoken with Barca.
The press and twitter told already more than everything so Thiago and Moyes can relax even more.

Bottom line is that it always takes longer for a transfer of this nature to be conducted in comparison to a new contract with your existing side being agreed. If he had agreed to stay, it would've been announced alongside his brothers or very soon after... clearly this is either a) still up for grabs or the technicalities are being resolved and both teams are keeping schtum, waiting until all the legal issues etc are all agreed upon before an official announcement is made.
Which is what I prefer.
Strootman not coming means Thiago probably is, i reckon.
