As I posted before, this is such a strange move, given his age and the age of their team. My guess is that Klopp has prioritised a second PL win at the expense of long term planning.
Nothing wrong with that .
Didn't Fergie do that by signing RVP.

Why would he think about long term planning when the team is peaking right now. It's their time to hoover up big titles.

I can’t see them replacing Henderson, he’s their glue

the Dutch lad, yes

I was talking about our bench btw not Liverpool
oh sorry, my mistake. Yeah I'd love to have him on the bench/rotation, but you're probably right.

I'd have Thiago here in a heartbeat. A far more capable, technically gifted alternative to anything we have on the bench. Plenty of magic in his boots, if his head is at Liverpool then that's a shame. I feel he'd be a great second choice when Bruno or Pogba needs resting. Oh well, :(.

I'm not entirely sure next season is the season to be thinking about long-term planning. Klopp's built (arguably...arguably) the best team in Europe and they're all at the perfect age for success. This is the first time in 30 years we have a team capable of a sustained run of success, we should be trying everything to maximise it. We've done our time buying young players trying to build a great team for 5 years in the future, and mostly it's ended up in our key parts getting snatched before the team peaks. So I'm fully behind trying to win now while we've got literally all the pieces and the system to do so.

In two years time, our players are still going to have value; start taking it apart then if need be.

He’s not a bench player though. He will walk into Liverpool’s midfield but he’s probably not going to replace Pogba or Bruno

Not sure why people are mentioning long term planning etc. Klopps not leaving for another 4 years minimum, 4 years ago he had just started his first full season and rebuilt/restructured the squad over the course of 2 years in to a title challenging one. Someone like Werner would have been ideal long term squad planning but it’s a bit strange to accuse him of a lack of planning given he’s got another four years.

By the time he leaves he’ll likely have rebuilt the squad for his successor which is what he said he’d do.

He's 33, but Messi could easily play until 37 in a limited capacity.

Messi doesn't really have the legs to be as explosive and carry teams anymore, he's going to need players around him to do the running and sadly they have a squad of aging players.

Barcelona won't rebuild before Messi leaves I don't think (sadly), happens often in sport though when the best leave there's a huge fallout in terms of performances.

I can't see Neymar returning but when he left we couldn't see him leaving either.

I can see Messi moving into a midfield orchestrater role like Xavi was as his passing is better than pretty much everyone else on the planet and it'll mean he won’t have to rely on moving about too much so his age won’t be a factor but like you said he’ll still need legs around him, without Messi up top they’ll need a world class game changer and I think Neymar is far more likely than the only person that could potentially replace Messi in Mbappe.

He had surprisingly spent a fair bit of time on the bench last season. Perhaps due to a stop/start campaign with injuries, but a quick glance on the bench for Bayern last season shows Thiago was not a starter in a fairly sizeable amount of games.

Not a chance Klopp stays for another 4 years

He will be the same age as millner was when he joined I think to put it in perspective
Next season they would have
Millner 34
Henderson 30
Thiago 29
Wijnaldum 29
Ox 26
Fabinho 26
Keita 25
Jones 19
and I think Trent (21) may well end up in midfield as well
seems he is available at a good price so seems pretty logical to me as Lallana is off and Millner cant go on forever

Don’t be daft. He signed a contract until 2024 half a year ago. Of course something can happen before that time but there’s definitely a chance, and a big one too imo.

Has Klopp ever rebuilt a squad? Genuine question not trying to be clever. He seems to run his sides into the ground then leave.
The Liverpool side he took over? But rebuilding a squad he built himself, I don’t think so no.

Still I don’t get people mentioning long term planning in this respect. You work towards a goal and now we’re at the height of our peak, we should try to get as much big trophies as possible and not worry about how the team could look in 2023. Tackle that problem when it presents itself.

Also Thiago is 29, easily 3-4 years left at the highest level. You’d think he’ll retire after next season if you read some of the comments in here.

The contract is just to protect both parties and you know it, doesn't mean it'll be fulfilled

His previous one was until 2022 if I’m not mistaken. Adding those two extra years does little for protection if he doesn’t have the intention to stay the entire period.

Again, not saying he’ll fulfill it; but saying that he definitely won’t at this point is simply pointless.

He will not start at Liverpool. Not immediately al least.

He wont sit on the bench for half a season. He maybe wont start the first league game, but i am sure a couple weeks into the new season and he will be a starter.

I feel like City and would be a great purchase. He’s better than Ilkay in my opinion.

Agreed, Ilkay has just never seemed the same player since his injury. Glimpses now and then but a shadow of the force he was at Dortmund in his pomp.

It all depends on what his ambitions are and how he does in training. If he believes he is the best and deserves to start, he has to prove it in training and there won't be much doubt that if he does, he will start any game.
Given the price tag associated, I doubt any club would buy him with any other ambition than fitting him right into the 1st team, then it is up to him to prove it on the pitch in training and in games.

We're crying out for a midfielder like him.
Who would he replace? Wijnaldum?

He would be their best midfielder by a country mile. They’d need to change philosophy though, right now the midfielders job is to prevent the counter attack & not much more. Their creative outlet is the fullbacks. Thiago is a creator not a workhorse.

After Sanchez, I hope United aren't in for him. I don't know, something about him reeks of Sanchez. No longer the boy who carried Vos nemos en Manchester ball. Do not want. The muppet saga was over years ago.

Oh yeah I agree. It’s going to be a short term fix if it happens.

We’ll need a rebuild in the next 2/3 years.
Well, Klopp probably leaves in 2-3 years anyway, no? So would make sense for him to target players in their prime now.

He's definitely not better than KDB.

Very naive to believe that any manager will stay in the same job for up to 8+ years, especially in the Premier League and especially especially at the top end of the game. Not saying it’s impossible, but you’re remarkably certain that he’ll be there for 4 more years minimum, which frankly can’t be said with certainty of any manager in any job in the world.

Didn't Fergie do that by signing RVP.

Given how the post-SAF period went, not sure that's the best example. Our post-SAF managers may have been poor, but the ageing squad he left behind was definitely a part of the problem.

We're not really talking about 4 years plus, this is stuff that will be an issue during Klopp's time. This time next summer you’ll be going into a season where 6 of your first team (plus Thiago, if you get him) turn 30 or above, and a few of your bench players do too. That means either replacing maybe 7 or 8 players in a couple of closed seasons, or relying on first team players until they're in the 32-34 yo age range. Thats a fairly risky approach either way. Starting next summer gives you very little margin for error. Its doable of course, but needs totally flawless recruitment and integration into the first team, which hasn't been the case so far under Klopp. Seems odd to take such a risk when Liverpool are on top now and are making changes from a position of strength.

Comparing it to the last time Klopp built the team is a bit fruitless because during those seasons Liverpool were only challenging for the top 4 and were nowhere near the title race. I assume Klopp isn't happy taking a back seat for a season or two while he rebuilds, so the process is likely to be different. He can't just change the team wholesale this time, he needs to evolve it.

Moyes pulled the plug on that not Thiago.

United aren't in for him. I have't heard a thing from United journalist about United wants him while the news about Klopp wants him getting stronger each day or week. He'll either go to Liverpool or somewhere else not United. Bayern is telling their people to use our name to get Liverpool as closed as the fees they wanted.

Beside, Liverpool doesn't have a passing type of midfielder, this guy will offer that to Liverpool midfielder.

He'd be (by far) their best midfielder in literally every single aspect. If he didn't start for the dippers, they'd be well advised to get Klopp certified...
Not for Liverpool system. Otherwise, when did Thiago Alcántara become peak Kroos or Modric to walk into the best team in Europe?.
