The Worst Champions

Ole's Gunnar Win saying it just sounds like sour grapes.

Germany in 1954 lost to Hungary 8-3 in the group stage, If there was doping, they'd have been doped then, too. Seems the Hungarians got a bit cocky.

Argentina 78's win over Peru is a good shout, and lest we forget senior allegations against England (66) and Germany (74). Some decisions favouring England in 66 (Hurt's second, Rattin's dismissal) enhance suspicion.

England's failure to compete at the very highest level again makes them the worst winner for me, especially with those suspicious, decisive calls going their way.
True, but there was at least evidence there were needles in the dressing room for the final for Germany. Plus it was like a calamity of everything that could possible go wrong for Hungary went wrong.

Puskas was injured and there were no substitutions back then.

They also had bad preparations you wouldn’t have today like how their game against Uruguay went to extra time in the semi final so they missed the bus back to the hotel and had to find a way back. Uruguay were probably the second best team in the world then too so it wrecked them. Then there was a village fair where they were staying and several players reported bad sleep.

It was torrential rain which didn’t suit their passing game. Then there were a few dodgy refereeing decisions.

It actually wasn’t illegal to dope in 1954 so they couldn’t disregard the match, there was no mechanism to do so.

There’s more evidence to this than just the score though. And even with the alleged doping they still needed the rain (with adidas boots being uniquely suited to it), Puskás’ injury, a questionable offside and keeper having the game of his life to beat them. Hungary was that good.

A few of the German players got jaundice after the game which is how we know that they’ve used injections before the game (German FA admitted it but said that it was vitamin D or C, I don’t remember).

There’s no way to prove anything now though.

Euro 2016 winner was the worst...
Not a single win in a group consisted of Iceland, Hungary and Austria.
R16 won 1-0 against Croatia
QR won penalty shoot-out against Poland
SF won against mighty Wales
Final - Eder

Who are the worst champions in your opinion in terms of performances and points relative to opposition (I.e. Having a low points total against weak opposition). In addition to other factors like goals and luck.

I know people will put Manchester City but in terms of the factors mentioned they wouldn't be the worst, they just achieved it by cheating off the field.

Who would you put as the worst to win?

The world cup
The Euros
Copa América

The Champions League
Europa League
The FA Cup
League Cup

The Premier League
La Liga
Serie A

And any others
WC - Argentina 78
Euros, Copa America - don't have a clue
Champions league - Marseille 93
FA cup - Everton 95
League Cup - Villa 94
Premier League - Blackburn 95

Yep. That team was doped head to toes with Panzerschokolade, as that kind of methamphetamine was called in Germany, in that game. The facts are pretty unambiguous.

UCL is surely Juventus in 1996 as they were doped up to high heavens?

Everybody’s on Steroids, or at least they should be.
We pay good money (or at least have to suffer through a shady Saudi stream with interracial midget porn pop up ads every 10 minutes) to watch these morons run after a ball on grass, well, here we are now, entertain us.

Everyone is on coke too, make no mistake.
Your milkman, your postman, your neighbor, the dagwalker, the cute barista girl, your accountant, their nephew, your last flight attendant, the car mechanic, the weird well dressed hobo on the corner and of course, the bus driver.

Its not big deal, let it go bro.

What does this part have to do with worst champions?

For the World Cup and Euro champions, I've turned to the infallible Sofascore algorithm to resolve this. Here are the overall team ratings for the winners, from best to worst, and what place that rating was in their own tournament. Full tournaments rated start from World Cup 1966 and Euro 1980. You can do it for the Champions League as well, starting from 03/04, but I lost interest by then.

1. England 1966 = 7.59 - 2nd behind West Germany
2. Brazil 1970 = 7.45 - 1st
3. France 1998 = 7.44 - 1st
4. Argentina 1978 = 7.43 - 1st
5. West Germany 1974 = 7.37 - 2nd behind Netherlands
6. West Germany 1990 = 7.35 - 1st
7. Brazil 1994 = 7.25 - 2nd behind Sweden
7. Brazil 2002 = 7.25 - 2nd behind Germany
8. Italy 2006 = 7.24 - joint 2nd alongside England and Brazil, behind Spain
8. Spain 2010 = 7.24 - 1st
8. Germany 2014 = 7.24 - 1st
9. Argentina 1986 = 7.19 - 4th behind (descending order) Soviet Union, France, Brazil
10. Italy 1982 = 7.10 - 10th behind Soviet Union, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Cameroon, West Germany, Poland, France, Brazil, England
11. France 2018 = 6.95 - 7th behind Croatia, England, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Brazil
12. Argentina 2022 = 6.90 - 9th behind Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Croatia, France, England

Euro:

1. Spain 2012 = 7.35 - 1st
2. Spain 2008 = 7.28 - 1st
3. Netherlands 1988 = 7.25 - 1st
4. France 1984 = 7.18 - 2nd behind West Germany
5. France 2000 = 7.16 - 2nd behind Netherlands
6. Spain 2024 = 7.15 - 2nd behind France
7. Denmark 1992 = 7.13 - 2nd behind Netherlands
7. Germany 1996 = 7.13 - 1st
8. West Germany 1980 = 7.12 - 2nd behind Italy
9. Italy 2021 = 7.05 - joint 1st with Spain
10. Portugal 2016 = 6.96 - 11th behind Italy, Spain, Wales, England, Poland, Switzerland, Croatia, Belgium, Germany, France
11. Greece 2004 = 6.93 - 11th behind Denmark, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Italy, England

There it is, England really are the greatest World Cup winners of all-time. Winning respect after all these years where it counts most...not on the pitch, but with who has the best numbers.

The world cup- Italy 2006
The Euros- Italy 2020

The Champions League- Chelsea 2012
The FA Cup- United 2024
League Cup- Swansea 2013

The Premier League- United 10/11
La Liga- Atletico 2020/2021
Serie A - Any winner in the last 3 years

United 10/11 is a weird one. Loved the season, a lot of last minute goals. Won 5 away games. We were excellent from March but before that we were pretty awful.
The effect of record champions. I have thought about it for the Bundesliga, and am pretty certain that Bayern has strong entries for the top three of worst BuLi championships:
- 2000, the Vizekusen season. Bayern winning it on gd and 73 points.
- 2001, THAT final matchday where Schalke celebrated being champions for the first and only time for a few minutes; Bayern champions on just 63 miserable points.
- 2023 Bayern edging an equally decrepit Dortmund on goal difference and 71 points.

Same probably goes for the DFB cup.

Leicester. They faded badly around the middle of the season and were lucky that everyone around them was fecking terrible. Spurs were their main challengers, says it all.

United in 2012/13, we were basically dragged kicking and screaming to a title by Van Persie.
United won the league by 11 points that season. Hardly kicking and screaming.

Basing it on teams I've seen (since the late 90s).

WC - Cant pick one, all were good.
Euros, Copa America - Greece 04
Champions league - us in 2012 (can't fault the determination of the players but in reality we were outplayed in the semi and the final)
FA cup - Wigan 13
League Cup - Birmingham 11
Premier League - United 11
