Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The usual melt behaviour because of opinions on "omg! My bestest game eva!!".

Most of the gameplay elements are worthless, it's funny that isn't argued with. And yet somehow, as Spanner says, it still manages to be up there as a goat because of the elements that are absolutely fantastic bring it all together. Surely you petals should be even happier with that?

Zelda is great you weapon (though I did think Skyward Sword was largely trash).

FF7 will always be my number 1 RPG. Morrowind and Oblivion were amazing back in the day but not sure if they’ve held up well as not played them for years.

Cloud > Gwent.

Not really. The story and dialogues are top notch, the music is brilliant, the characters are amazing, the diversity of missions is great, and the side quests are actually interesting.

The gameplay is good enough, but not necessarily as complex as old RPGs. Redlambs just thinks that every post-90s game that is not Zelda has bad gameplay.

One of the greatest games of all time, no doubt there. And probably, the best RPG ever.

Agreed, if you play on Death March with enemy scaling enabled it remains challenging throughout and the Enchanced Edition ironed out the worst imbalances and flaws in the combat.

Funnily enough, I'm playing FF7 right now on my death bed. Haven't properly played it since launch and want to finally get around to the remake.

I got it on steam (bad move), played it for a day then got ill. On my Switch I had FF9 so started playing that instead...my word, I forgot how boring that one is compared to 7. So I've bought it again on the switch, really enjoying it.

I also forgot how hard games were back then. I don't mean to play, but pre Internet being everywhere, just to figure out

I don’t think it’s possible for a game to be hailed as one of the greatest ever by having pointless gameplay and mechanics as you’re suggesting. Like I said, it’s not elite but it obviously had a certain fun factor which was part of the lure. On the point regarding time, could be my memory fading but if let like the standard for narrative driven games back then was like GTA 5, Mass Effect 2 before etc. Even at Sony, you can see TLOU / Uncharted to GoW / TLOU2 and the gulf.

Yawn worthy for me personally. But we have a MGS love in common so it’s all good. What’s a cloud? I thought that was the blonde fuzzy haired dude from FF not a minigame?

Yeah I used to buy the walkthrough guides (or rather my brother did) when I was younger. The joys of no internet during the late 90s/early 00s.

9 is a weird one for me, think it’s a very good game but I prefer 7, 8 and X.

Think 7 will always be my favourite as it was the first game that ever really blew me away in scale and scope as a kid.

7 and 6 are the gold standards, but 9 gets pretty close to them IMO. Miles better than 8 and especially 10, and I would say a bit better than 4 (IMO).

The funniest thing is all this shite about "agendas" and all that these days...the first few hours of FF7 you dress like a girl, and I forgot about the romance options in the game including the Barret love. I don't remember the moral outrage about any of that back then

And it's been done to death on here, bit I personally have 4, 6 and 7 definitely above 9. I sometime need to do 8 (I can only remember being disappointed after 7 by that one) and 10 again.

Don't start talking about FF in here ffs.

Messi and Ronaldo debate of the gaming world.

I've only just done the first 20 or so hours, but it's much more boring than I remember, and that time event thing is intrusive. I know it ends up as a great game, at least in my memory, but 4,6 and 7 all start far better and I prefer their combat systems.

The card game though...God I forgot how tragic that was. The RNG

A game doesn't have to have amazing gameplay or a great combat system to be a masterpiece/up there with the best ever, there are plenty of examples out there other than The Witcher 3. I dunno why people are getting so insulted  We all agree it's incredible, but not because of the combat. The combat is ... perfectly acceptable and therefore doesn't bring all the great elements of the game down, is probably the best way to put it.

I don't know, Switch 2 vs Steam Deck could soon be a contender to that throne...
I can’t imagine trading big screen gaming for handheld tbh.

I remember once having a Sega handheld when i was a kid. It even had a little screen you could attach to magnify it. I was done after that.

Edit : Game Gear!

Or a great story or great writing or great graphics. I think we all agree on that. We can however disagree on whether its gameplay was crap / average / good / great. That’s sort of how these threads work really.

I think the Switch works because it's a crossover, as in it has more power than a traditional handheld vs the consoles but also has full games. Whereas the older handhelds had games/versions that were made specifically for them.

But yeah, on a monitor/big TV is definitely better. I've put my Switch in the Dock for the first time in ages and playing FF7 on a big TV because screw squinting at those tiny icons on a tiny screen

I might hit the Horizon thread next...

So most things in the game are average it seems
When I played the first 5 hours or so i wasn't quite getting the fuss but there's a storyline after leaving the first area that just blew me away and after that the game wouldn't let me go. The side quests, lore, monster hunts, music, card game, characters are some of the best in gaming and choices actually matter (which is still a novel thing in gaming all these years later). Also still has the best DLC in a video game all these years later.

Well sure but you thought horizon 2 and cyberpunk had great gameplay so what do you know?

More than the skill tree, what’s going to matter is whether you prefer redheads or raven haired women.

This, BG3 and KCD1 (likely KCD2 soon) are my tops I think.

Are all side quests permanent? As in can I progress through the game and come back to them or do some get locked out?

I am terrible at Gwent.

Same old Elvis, always needs guides.

Pffft.
I just don’t like to miss things!

Getting the hang of Gwent now, good fun.

I really need to remember to save more often aswell. Times like this I miss PC when you can just quick save.
