Television The Wire

Almost finished the first season. Totally addicted again. It's the last thing I watch before bed and I'm getting an episode in before I go to work in the morning. It's so unbelievably good.

I'm on 6th episode of last season, ist my second watching. A masterpiece.

Halfway through my first rewatch in ten years. The port series is a lot better than I remembered. It really gets under the skin of the circumstances which create crime while telling a police story in a way not much else ever has.

I'm halfway through the third season. Hamsterdam. Doing a few episodes a day, every day.

I can quit any time I want. Honest.

I’ve not actually seen this show… but at the weekend I was in Budapest doing a touristy boat trip on the Danube and got talking to an American guy in the queue. He said he was a small time actor and he was in Budapest to film a TV episode of a small show he hadn’t heard of until he was given the job.

I asked him if he’d been in anything I might have heard of… and he said he appeared in all seasons of the Wire as a lawyer “for the bad guys”. Nice chap. Anyway, I feel I should watch the show now to see how much he actually is in it… and since the show does get rave reviews.
Haha, cool story.

On my first watch 3rd season was probably my favourite but on each rewatch it gets worse in my opinion. Hamsterdam storyline got old pretty quick.

Feels a bit weird to tell someone that actually you think the thing they're currently enjoying wasn't that good. At least wait until they've finished the season

The 2nd season might be my favourite. On the first watch it feels like it gets in the way of the story and characters you knew from the first season, but when viewed as a whole it's fantastic.

It's excellent, one of the best seasons of TV. The ending of the penultimate episode is chefs kiss.

On the final season now. It is absolutely brilliant. You get so invested in the characters that you have to watch just one more episode. I remember the first time I watched it, I'd regularly go to bed at 3 or 4 in the morning, very reluctantly. Now, I'm older and less capable of staying up, so it's around midnight now. But, oh my god, it's just the most incredible show.

Going to have to rewatch Sopranos when I'm done.

Fun fact: Steve Earle, who plays Bubbles' sponsor, Walon, is the singer of the theme tune on the final season.

Personally, I prefer the season 4 version.

Just finished.

Epic.

5 seasons in 25 days. That's how good and how addictive it is. Feel sad now it's over.

In 4 or 5 years' time, we go again.

I don't know it it's my outright favourite, but it's fantastic. I get some people may feel slightly disappointed on first watch because they don't get to see more of the characters and the plotlines they grew so fond of in season 1, but other than that readjustment, it's just superb television.

When you first watch it seems like a big shift, but in reality it’s not so much that as it is the world you are seeing grows with each season and you’re getting a look at more and more aspects of that city.

It’s so bloody good.

I’ve recently binged on clips after the YouTube algorithm one day decided to show me a Norman/Carcetti scene when Carcetti is going nuts in the back of a car then quickly goes into politician mode when he leaves the car.

The show is fairly strong throughout. The switch between Season 1 and 2 can be initially jarring and you wonder whether you’re watching the same show. Season 5 is a little Hollywoodish.

I find myself rewatching most of the scenes except all the ‘hood’ (for lack of a better term) scenes like Barksdale, Omar, Stansfield. That stuff is a bit meh to me. The law enforcement and government stuff is much more interesting to me, as well as the brief journalism point of view in the last season.

Love Lester and Norman. Hated that cnut Rawls.

I loved Rawls. Be a dick to work for/with, but his character was great.

"Sssssergeant, your floater is back."

My first watch and starting season 3. I know I am toooooo late for the party.

Anyone else watch those super cut clips on YouTube that focus on a particular character or plot line? The tragedy of old faced Andre, the tribulations of r Clayton Davis, the downfall of mayor Royce. All great.

I feel like once upon a time the consensus was other than the fifth season, the second season was the weakest, or at least the least popular. Then as people did more and more rewatches, season 2 became seen as underrated, and now I think there’s a lot online that overrates it at least relative to the other seasons.

4,3,1,2,5 in that order for me, although 1 and 2 are damn close but for different reasons.

The scene in season 2 of the Key Bridge “it’s gonna last forever just like we are” is even more brutal now the bridge is gone

You might be right but I just love that season. Frank is one of the best characters the show produced.

Ah shit yea of course that’s the bridge :(

Season 2 deserves its flowers. Whether it started as underrated and then became overrated or not, it is the season that takes you furthest away from "the streets" while still perfectly depicting how "the game is the game" and that "all the pieces matter", and that is an immense achievement in terms of its writing.
