Van Hollen says 'Margarita-gate' photo was staged by Bukele's government

Speaking to reporters at Dulles airport in Washington on Friday afternoon, the senator Chris Van Hollen just accused the government of El Salvador of creating the hoax he called “Margarita-gate”, by placing a pair of cocktail glasses on the table between himself and Kilmar Ábrego García as they met the night before, to make it look as though they were enjoying drinks.

Those photographs were posted on X by El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, along with a caption that downplayed the seriousness of the situation by falsely claiming that the senator and the wrongly deported man had been “sipping margaritas” as they met on Thursday evening.

But the senator said that the drinks were placed there during the meeting by someone from the Salvadoran government before the photographs were taken and that neither he nor Ábrego García had touched them. Van Hollen pointed out that there was visual evidence for this in the photographs: the rims of both glasses were covered in salt or sugar, but it was clear from the images that neither glass had been drunk from, since the rims were undisturbed.

Trump is obviously lying about this guy’s background and is doubling down because he doesn’t want to look like he’s capitulating to pressure. If he had any evidence about all the bad things he’s accusing him of, it would be fairly straightforward to simply release it.
The fact that he hasn’t speaks volumes.

The most dangerous thing about him is he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. Crapping on about the severity of autism he, personally, has and hasn’t encountered as though that makes him an authority on the subject. It will be the same with all of his policies. He doesn’t realise when he should be deferring to someone who has a much deeper understanding of the issues than he will ever have.

This is the most ridiculous story chain ever.

No one would have batted an eyelid if they just went "There was a mistake as a result of Bidens awful recruitment policies and the Trump administration have moved heaven and earth to get him back". Cue MAGA parade when plane lands and Trump photo-op with the guy saying anyone who comes here legally has the full support of the government. Anyone questioning the legality of any further deportations would be drowned out with "but what about "that guy"!"

Instead we have El Salvadorian intelligence plant cocktail glasses to make it seem like a senator had a drink with a man who has been wrongfully imprisoned? Does anyone actually care about that? It's absurd. Such an easy win for Trump to get too.

Doing a study quickly is one thing. Claiming that one, not even designed, study will somehow establish causality in a topic researched for decades is just pure scum behavior.

It will probably have to come from further left and create spark? Polls suggest around 10–15% of Americans support leftist policies that go further than mainstream Democrats. That’s 30–50 million people, but the overwhelming majority don’t belong to parties or organisations. That 10 - 15 % shoots to over 30% in the under 30s. There are a couple of hundred thousand people actively participating in organisations with very left wing manifestos and it's reckoned there are 5,000 members of the CP in the US, although they are one of the few CPs with no official members at all, for a long time now. In the land of the free.

The problem the US faces is the two party duopoly. In this context, if a left wing movement were to gain momentum through protest, it would be mostly limited to political candidates who are forced to run as Democrats or Independents who caucus with Democrats (and as such can't access most Democratic party financial resources). This more or less would leave the movement with candidates like Sanders (who is 83 and nearing the end) and AOC (who is 37 and not considered mainstream enough to move up through the Democratic party). Beyond those two and a small handful of progressives in Congress, the Dem party is mostly driven by centrist policies that rely on corporate donor money to fund their campaigns.

The answer may not lie with the visible candidates. They may jump on board a movement of the grassroots left. A la BLM.

What’s more, by design the American political system has been tailored to require a lot of money for even low level elections let alone running for the house and senate. Rich people don’t back socialists.

As the founding fathers intended. The American democracy was never intended to be actually governed by the people. It all comes down to a small elite that gets legitimised through elections, that don’t actually present that much of a choice. Trump being a bit of an outlier I still can‘t place.
