The Trump Presidency : Part 2

Guess we'll see more of these 1-on-1 negotiations between Trump and other countries.

US, Vietnamese businesses ask Trump to delay 46% tariffs on Vietnam

One one one negotiations are not going to change anything.
Trump and his cronies are of the flawed opinion that tariffs are the reasons for trade imbalances. They don’t realise that trade imbalances are structural. I heard the average tariff on American products by Vietnam is less than 2%. Even if tariffs were 0, Vietnam won’t imports goods made in America for the simple reason they are too expensive for the average Vietnamese. Same goes with most of the world. It’s just part and parcel of being the world’s richest country.

Trump advisor Stephen Miller:

What's the point of increasing the reach of this idiocy? How many US computers/phones run on European operating systems?

(And yes, American cars are at the level of a Czech operating systems on a functional level for 85% of humanity).

I like bigger cars too but I'd rather walk than choose an American SUV over a German one.

Many people in Germany actually like American cars I'd say (muscle cars for instance have a huge fan base) but they are just massively unpractical except for Ford and Tesla (which isn't affordable for the majority anyway). Most importantly because fuel is much more expensive over here but also because those typical US pick-up trucks are indeed far too big for most European metropoles. Which effectively makes them luxury goods except maybe in some rural areas. But when people see you driving a Hummer, Corvette, Jeep or something along those lines, most people will assume you're a rich prick with a small penis.

They aren’t down much if at all, mainly because the reason they originally went up hasn’t gone away.

You are just a liberal liar. Trump fixed the bird flu and hatched billions of fertilized eggs himself, last week.

Obviously, for anyone slightly informed, she has no need for 401k anyway, she is making millions of dollars a year, she has nothing to lose.
Unfortunately, most people are not informed, and listens to characters like these, and don't question what they are saying.

Though, i'm a bit surprised that Faux doesn't have a coherent message yet, some are saying "sacrifice for dear leader", others are saying its Biden and dems fault, while others are just saying tariffs are great.

Surely will stick to one talking-point next year though, to get the base in line.
Would anyone be surprised, if Trump's inside circle sold their shares in a lot of companies to sit on cash fully aware of this Trump move.

That's not what they do, they sell their shares and buy them back when the market goes down, on past form Trump will backtrack or give exemptions in some areas and then the shares will rise again and they pocket the difference, rinse and repeat a few times and they've made billions

Sit on cash and then buy back just before Trump dials back the Tariffs.

Per the BBC the white house is saying more than 50 countries have reached out to make a deal. Which ones? And have those countries corroborated that?
The trump administration is good at controlling the media and playing to their base. The poor trumpers are lapping this shit up even as eggs and gasoline prices are still very high and it looks like a recession is being forced on them.
The levels of stupidity know no bounds.

The penguins already sent a delegation notifying of a surrender.

A lot of the ones I've seen mentioned like Vietnam and Cambodia are the ones that produce the cheaper goods. That'll solve some of the price problems but mean tariffs achieved nothing for US manufacturing.

Are there even 50 countries with any meaningful trade volume with the US, considering the EU are treated as one block?

I still feel the media are treating Trump like a 'normal' politician. One who generally followed the unwritten rules and conventions of 'acceptable' politics.
I have been saying this for a while. The media is doing horrendously. This man should be treated as the crazy piece of shit he is. Instead, the media is normalizing the crazy.

Yes, that is part of the problem. They keep on giving him the benefit of the doubt as if 90% of what came out of his mouth wasn't a lie, insult or exaggeration.

I could have sworn I posted this already, but now it is gone. Anyways, this is totally normal and a perfect example of out institutions holding up just fine. After all, there is nothing more institutionally normal than 3rd graders being abducted by ICE.

The mainstream tv media are always going to default to treating him in semi normal terms because they are more or less in the business of reporting factual events as they happen. The pundits on various networks are going to add a bit more criticism, and the non traditional media such as podcasters are going to be far more critical. The trouble with Trump is he has his own self contained media ecosystem at Fox, Newsmax, OANN, a litany of right wing podcasters, Twitter and talk radio, so any mainstream media criticism of him isn’t likely to resonate with a sizeable swath of the public.

All you have to know mate, and use as reassurance, is that the institutions are in place and working to stop this and hold those responsible accountable. The systems are working fine mate, there's nothing to worry about. Just be patient and you will see.

Second child dies of measles.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he has arrived in west Texas after a school-aged child died at a local hospital where they were receiving treatment for measles – marking the second death of a minor in the state linked to the ongoing outbreak.
Kennedy’s response to the outbreak has been “abysmal,” said Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital.

Every democracy has a formal system of checks and balances (legal or constitutional rules of various guides), and an informal system of unwritten rules, norms of behaviour and conventions. The penalties for breaching those informal rules are political.

Even following a court order is more an unwritten convention. They are enforced because people accept the courts should be followed.

All across Europe and America we are seeing populist politicians erode those unwritten norms. Once they have done so they find the written checks and balances are also easier to evade.

If media organisations in all democracies truly cared about democracy they would call out, instead of normalising this politics of extremism. Treating the abnormal as normal will obviously normalise it.

American media is bad at this, but so is media here in Europe.

Now is the time of monsters.

How old is third grade? 7?

That definitely makes sense although in most democracies it really up to the people to sufficiently mobilize to kick these guys out of power once and for all.

Hence the attempts to restrict voting rights. The photo ID requirement here goes further than measures imposed in the US.

I would add that the media does play a role in protests. If they are reported then they can grow in size and importance. There's a good reason why the media autocracies downplay or minimise any forms of dissent, especially in public.

Interestingly, it was the mainstream media that was blamed for giving Trump upwards of a $1B in free air time in 2015/16, most of which was wasted on covering his tweets. He has used the MSM to his advantage and once their coverage no longer benefited him, he created his own self contained media ecosystem. People seem to get more of their information online than from traditional news sources these days, so I’m not sure how much it would move the needle politically if news anchors began to spend more time criticizing him.

Imagine being so evil that you arrest fecking eight year olds.
RFK Jr. is fecking homicide perpetrator.
