The Times: Football's 50 greatest hard men

To be fair I was expecting a top 10 for Big Dunc. Hes a feckin' nutcase and built like a brick wall.

1 Andoni Goikoetxea (Athletic Bilbao)

Everyone expected the Spanish Inquisition when they faced this mean hombre. The Butcher of Bilbao was plainly at least one prawn short of a paella, and delighted in reducing star names to rubble. Pride of place in the living room of El Sod was a glass case, containing one football boot. The boot he had used to destroy Diego Maradona’s ankle ligaments. Aye caramba!

He was an absolute animal. I don't think he would have been out of place as a cage fighter.

Good choice for number one.

what about Schumacher, i think it was him who karate kicked someone

That was in the 1982 world cup semifinal between Germany and France.

He didn't karate kick someone but he punched the french fullback Battiston.

He was not exactly a hardman since he was a goalkeeper and the incident with Battiston is the only nasty thing I've ever seen him do.

I cant believe Big Dunc isnt in the top 5!

I love reading about the Players who have kicked arse away from the pitch. Even Cantona's kung fu kick should earn him a spot on that list.

Yeah but as somone pointed out above there's a difference between being "hard" (being prepared to give it and take it while trying to play football) and "dirty" (just kicking people without much comeback since you're not trying to play). In this particular case I'd define Schumacher as "the most vicious cowardly player" rather than the hardest.

wow... poor old George best, lol. and a red card inside 10 seconds is a record... the left hook is just the one though. lol.

and what about the samuri swords... feck me, feck the football, i wana keep my legs. lol

the hardman nails maradonna

Perhaps there needs to be a distinction between dirty and hard. John Giles came 5th on the list, but i reckon it was down to him being a dirty player more than anything. Someone like Stam(not on the list) is probably a lot harder than he was.

Any list with Patrick Vieira and Ibrahamovic listed as hardmen is somewhat flawed in my opinion. And how the hell Kevin "The Psycho" muscat doesn't appear there is beyond me:D

Any list that puts Vieira as harder than Frank Barson is fatally flawed.

Barson made Chuck Norris cry.
