Television The Terror

Seems they're continuing the series but with a different story about the Japanese internment camps.

Interesting trailer. The first season was pretty solid overall, even as I felt the show's choice to make it a physical confrontation undermined some of the books conclusionary themes. High grade schlock all the same. I'll check the new series out for sure.

Just started watching this via the BBC iPlayer. Love the sets and Jared Harris is always a pleasure to watch.

Did they release a second season yet?

The second series was also pretty good. Crumbled a bit towards the end but there were 4 or 5 very solid episodes with good atmos and spooky ideas.

Finished this yesterday. Can't fault it really, superb acting, writing, visuals and sound.

I will say that it's possibly the grimmest show I've ever seen.

I didn't realise until episode 6 that the Dan Simmons that wrote the book this was adapted from is the same Dan Simmons that wrote the Hyperion Cantos, which I've been reading for the past few years.

Talented old goat.

The book is just as bad. Can't believe they made it into a generally pretty good show. Hyperion is probably my fav series ever, so immediately read the Terror when done. Bit of a change!

For whatever reason, about 50 years after the end of season 2, they announced they're working on a third season.

I quite liked the first season, they got everything right. I watched it last summer and the first thing I did after finishing it was reading about what (possibly) happened and several possible explanations behind it. I love it when they keep me intrigued when I watch something as it's getting so rare these days. it's actually incredible how many interesting stories there are to make a show or movie based on the them, but aren't being used. we need more stories such as Franklin's expedition and less same old wandering ghosts, haunted houses and clowns.

second season was meh though. not that bad, just weaker in every way. watchable overall.

Agreed, first season was excellent, while I did enjoy season 2 it was not up to season 1.

Are the two seasons linked in any way as I liked the first one although it was a bit too slow.

Absolutely loved S1 but never watched S2 bc of the reviews talking about it being a step down. Hopefully this new season will be of the same quality as the first.

Watching this now in 2024. Very good show. Great cast, great writing, great directing. On episode 8. I love this show is scary without being impossible.

I am already a fan of the author Dan Simmons. He’s written horror, historical horror (like this show’s source), science fiction, detective fiction, the lot.

Can't bring myself to watch series 2 given it isn't meant to be as good as S1 and S1
ended with a very silly monster thingy.

I m like most of you - I loved S1 and I hope another season can be more in line with that. Only complaint with S1 is that once the monster becomes fully visible it doesn't seem so ominous anymore. Though I understand that in some ways the characters themselves and the choices they make in some ways are more important than the threat of the creature - which merely facilitates people s true nature coming out.

I'm at the end of the final book as we speak.
Brace yourself. It’s a beautiful ending. More than that, it’s astonishing how it all comes together at the end, the previous 3,500 pages or so, where there are things in the first book that don’t really make sense until the end of the 4th book.

I always loved that conversation between crozier and Fitzjames who started as quite hostile until finding respect beyond friendship “are we brothers Francis ?”. I absolutely love how that relationship develops.

Can't wait.

Spot on. Absolutely loved that scene. Reminded me a bit of Master & Commander. An unlikely likely friendship.

I never watched season 2, precisely because of what you describe.

The North Water scratched the same itch. I never thought Colin Farrel had it in him to play such a large, menacing bastard.

North water is on my list.

Terror season two is watchable.

Why I spoilered my comment :)
Finished season 1 of The Terror. I liked it. Thought it was extremely well done. I know you didn’t like the polar bear with the weird face but it had been seen throughout season 1 and I had no problem with it. Interesting ending to the story. It was probably the right length of time too.
