The shocking decline of Trent Alexander Arnold

I thought the plan was always to move him into the midfield ?
Hes awful as a defender.
Bad at every aspect of defending.

That would be a good idea to get him away from the defence. But then there is problem number 2... he can’t pass.

There is a reason Trippier gets in the England team.

I genuinely believe that the team would be more fluid rather than someone hitting 20 deep crosses every match.

Oh, you were serious.

I just watched Aarons play against my other boys Wycombe in the championship. Plenty of development needed for him.
Although I do irrationally despite "Trent".

He was just an example, just a defender who can play as an individual or in a fluid system. I’m sure that there are more examples. TAA has only did it in a system totally built around him.
I’m thinking like when Fergie picked Saha over Ruud then the team was more fluid, not that Saha was a better finisher than ruud, he just made the team work better. I feel that way a bit about TAA.
But hey it’s the scousers so feck them

Surely the best crosser in the league. Absolutely outstanding deliveries. Reminds me of Becks, the accuracy is flawless. How he's not picked for England is laughable.

Such a shame he's a Liverpool player.

Agree. He had a really bad spell this season, but seems to get back on form. Was brilliant today.

Southgate really has to include him in his Euro squad imo.You don't need Walker, Reece James and Trippier in your squad while having one of the best crossers in the league (if not the best) sitting at home. The question should be if he starts for England, not if he is included in the squad.

He'll of course be in the squad but let's not pretend he's had a good season because he's put in a good cross against a shite Arsenal side last night.

He's been well below par this term, as can be expected with young players. I'm sure he'll improve and develop. Some of the comparisons with Cafu were ridiculous though and far too premature.

Great player, poor season. To be fair to him, he's reached a really high standard and at his age, doing that for 3 seasons running is a big ask. He'll come good again and showed last night that he's just been out of form rather than anything long term

People are really making out that one good cross shows that he's turned the corner or that he's proven to still be world class.

There is a weird fetish with TAA.

He's apparently undroppable for England already too even though he's been one of the worst performers this year, has always been suspect defensively and we have a lot of choice at RB. Credit to Southgate on dropping him.

I'm sure the kid will find form again, but he was never as good as he was made out to be. Thankfully for him the English media is right behind him and he'll get every opportunity.

He was never as good as he was made out to be?

You stand by that?

He’s got very good technical skills and brilliant delivery. I still think he should be in the England squad. He has always been a little overrated though, you do have to carry his defensive game.

If he or Trippier play for England, the. Walker has to play as a third centre back to make up for their defensive liabilities. Is it worth it?

Not massively sure what the big deal about not being picked against San Marino, Albania and Poland is really .... but kudos to Southgate, he's done it Rooney, very much deserved and Trent - maybe not as deserved, but he's got a wealth of talent at RB so as good as time as any to tell them all they have a chance if they do well.

Probably others too where we kinda just got on with it.

It was definitely deserved. He'd been awful this season.

The irony is that he's actually been one of our best players lately, after being awful for much of the season. There's nothing surprising about his performance yesterday. But the press will no doubt make it out that it was a response to Southgate dropping him.

Absolutely. His all round game still needed a lot of work.

He worked perfectly in that Klopp system, his attacking and crossing ability couldn't be questioned, but that is not all that is required of a RB. Certainly not one expected to play in a different way for England.

He's had 1 assist in 12 competitive England games. It's not a shock. He's never transferred his Liverpool productivity over to the national team. His general performance rating in those England games aren't anything to write home about either.

It is what it is. There can be no complaints when Trippier, Reece James, Walker and co are his competition and he loses his spot for international under-performance. If other players have had better domestic seasons, and have looked better for England, then it's valid.

I swear I haven't seen worse fullback when it comes to defending in ages. He is absolutely clueless defensively.

Shall I cross a bit, lift the mood?

He reminds me so much of Trippier. Capable of great crosses but a liability as a defender.

I think he's a great player in the right system, but that means building a team to cover for his many inadequacies.

But he's not a great defender. He can't defend.

In a team that has others to cover his defending behind him, and someone with legs to run spaces in front of him, he can shine.

Problem is, that has been what hes had at Liverpool for two years. Without it he struggles.

Its probably the only two years he will have that luxury his entire career.

Walker is first choice right back for England. He is considerably better than Trippier or TAA

Mourinho knew how terrible his defending is 3 years ago, it still hasn't improved.

His future surely lies at being a right wing-back (in a 3 centre back system) or just a right winger? Him on the right in a back four is a glaring weak spot.

Of course, but more in a general sense. I think VVD played on the LCB, didn’t he?
I think he did but I do remember a few times vvd cleaning up on his side when he was further up the pitch (think that's how good he was for the team)
