Mejbri
I've been very supportive of Rangnick on here from the start. Actually wanted him desperately as an interim once Ole went off the rails, with the hope he'd become a bonafide DoF at the end of the season. So I may have been quite biased. In fairness to him, it does seem that the players have not responded to him after the first half hour against Palace, and he's not been supported by the club (with that obvious gaping hole of a DM that was neglected yet again, most lately in January). But he's not helped himself, not least now that we're virtually out of contention for the top 4 and he's fielding a player who has publicly declared the season over for us, who also looks to be off in the summer. And no Mejbri on the bench, while Mata, Jones and Lingard are all there. And Lingard being sick on the day.

He desperately needs to promote a player or two, whether from the youths, or from the fringes, who will take his opportunity with appreciation and play for him, like Elanga. And it is also a benefit for the long-term both in terms of player development, but not least in terms of culture. He's fallen into the same trap it seems as Ole, with picking all the highest profile players despite ill-balance and lack of application. To go with his 4222 when it has already been shown that these players are not playing for him, and do not - as a collective - have the physical intensity to perform his style of play was ill-advised.

I'm not suggesting "play the youths", I am suggesting promoting our most promising prospect who is playing below his own level at U23 level, and promote one or two others for the match day squad, taking a bench seat off a player who has no future at the club.

Another thing Rangnick clearly does not possess is motivational ability. When you've been dumped out of the CL with no trophy left to play for and your highest profile player declares the season over in the press, you have to rally the players together and lay down the gauntlet. You don't have to be SAF to challenge your players and set mini ambitions within the rest of season.

As bad as Rashford has been - and he's been absolutely diabolical (also when he came on against Leicester, couldn't even be asked to mark his man for defending corners) he has to either play him ahead of two false nines who do not play as false nines, but as attacking midfielders crowding each others' space, or play Elanga through the middle. Moot point going forward perhaps, as Ronaldo will play all the games in likelihood, but he has to acknowledge that he's got a team that is not collectively capable of carrying out his instructions, some players who have checked out, so he needs to infuse the squad with new blood to raise the spirit and put his point across.

He's interim, and if the players want a cop out they got it when interim was put in. These guys who have no back bone have thrown at least one manager under the bus, and they got a get out of jail free card with Ralph.
How can he expect them to listen to his ideas when a new manager will do it differently.

So the players, are confused and it shows in the performances. The season is dead and when a team doesn't have a striker fit to play and the one that is fit is not selected, is more of an issue with that player, also I feel Greenwood has been a massive miss and I genuinely believe some of these draws we've had we would have won if he was available.
Ralph could not forsee that, and it's also a big issue for next season as well in who they decide to buy. Ralph and the players along with us as fans are lost until a permanent manager is there.

The remainder of this season is what happens off the field. If a manager is not in place immediately after season's end, that's a setback of another year. The course of direction has to be set immediately. If player's aren't dealt and brought in by mid-July, that's another setback. But at the speed this club moves... Abandon all hope.

The players have downed tools for Ralf (partly because he's a bit out of his depth and partly because they know he doesn't rate most of them and will recommend they be sold I reckon) so it's going to be a long and painful 8 weeks. Not looking forward to our inevitable second humbling from Liverpool.

Play the kids, finish 8th. I don't want to watch EL dross games so the Glazers can keep filling up their piggy bank and ECL is a worse than nothing.

agree. Nothing quite like thursday football to feck your league season up. We never play at 3pm on a saturday as it is, let alone with that shite.

Good post OP and I mostly agree. Play the kids when we can now, season is dead anyways. Show some fight at Anfield is all i ask.

This is not on Rangnick, but the players. Players know that he is interim. If they can't even deal with new tactics/training for few months, then there is no hope. Excuses like "Players are worried that new manager hunt is not complete" is just an excuse. The players (or majority) are actively trying to get rid of him, despite he being interim. Not to mention, players mouthing off to media directly or through PR agencies, about their hurt feelings and hearts.

In the past, such comments would have been aggressively tackled by the club. Now, club either sidesteps such comments or just draws hearts and love symbols for the players in the social media. I am not sure Rangnick still wants that 2 year stint.

But the kid with all the passion, may not be doing as bad.

I think keep playing these unmotivated players is sure way to get that desired 8th place now 4th is dead.

I actually think he is going to play the kids once it's mathematically impossible for the CL spot. At least some of the younger players.

Club admins will step in and stop him I think. Make sure that he is playing Rashford and Pogba and the likes.

Ok we've got a snowflake's chance in hell of getting Top 4 but until it's mathematically impossible the season is still alive albeit in intensive care......

After Anfield, it's done and there'll 6 games left. We might even be 8th by then

Dead man walking this season. Absolutely disgusted at the most of the player's performance over the year as a whole. Abysmal season.

4-1 thrashing by Watford
5-0 thrashing by Pool
4-1 thrashing by City
Booted out the FA cup by Championship side Middlesborough

when we needed to get a win, half assed first half and then drew to a fairly poor Leicester side.

Most of these players should be ashamed to cash their checks.

Winning EL for qualify might be our ticket to CL in a rebuild year like first year under Mourinho. So might be important all things considered.

I agree, give the young players some matches to see if they are ready to step up. The season is truly dead, so I would rather see a 1-2 loss playing some youngsters versus a 1-1 draw with Pogba and Lingard in the team. You never know when some players are ready for the first team. Look at Greenwood and Rashford.

I hope the club is already done with the major decisions for next season. The next manager, whatever his and the clubs targets are, the players needed in the summer etc. And you would think a club of this size and resources would obviously do all this. But it’s more of a hope at this point.

I reckon most of the fans would rather see the young players give it a go but that won't happen. We will continue to play the regular first 11 with the same shit results until the season finally, and mercifully, comes to its in evitable depressing end.

And award all of them with new contracts.

Worth noting that not being in Europe ends up with the kids getting less chances next season, not more. I think you’d end up with a new manager desperate to win something next year so effectively playing the most experienced players all the time. The one thing the Europa league offers is giving chances to players like Amad, Garner, Pellistri, Mejbri etc, in competitive first team games where the jeapordy is a little lower. If you’re not in Europe then I don’t thing there’s a chance in hell that the kids get picked for the weekly Premiership matches and you may end up with more stagnation, or risk players going on loan and simply not playing.

This season is on course to be even worse than Moyes's season which is really something. Considering many of our fans, including me, believed at the start of the season, that we can finally challenge for the title after all those years, shows how little I know about football.

Only thing that can improve things is to announce the new manager as soon as possible. I would like to see some fight in the players, to show something to the new manager and why not, finish as high as possible.

Overall imo Ralf was an uninspired appointment we should have gone for someone else, because top 4 race wasn't over when Ole was sacked.

Keep seeing people say the season is over but actually we have a fight on our hands to even get Europa League, definitely need to avoid the shite that is Europa Conference

Still in general I would like to see some youth get a chance since the senior options are not delivering - Garnacho and Hannibal in particular

The season was over when Liverpool humiliated us. It's just taking some people a while to understand the reality that the Glazer project has wrecked the club.

Agree, he thought this was a manager issue ie Ole, he was lambasted all over the place, now Ralph can see the main issues are the players, not all some still show. Others are just going through the motions. I for one wouldn't play Pogba, not going to learn anything off him he's going, so put another in from under 23s for next 8 games. Sooner the season is over and new guy comes the better, or is the new guy waiting for CL , if so he's got a long wait.

I think you may be right. I’d be bringing a few in already but no doubt the glazers will be putting pressure on not to until it’s mathematically impossible. They require their dividends and wouldn’t want to jeopardise that!

That's not the point of this thread though, hence the quote marks. It came from Pogba's mouth, the point being made is we can't be fielding players who have checked out, we've got to begin next season now - which is likely what SAF would be doing, laying down the gauntlet. Throwing in Mejbri and giving one or two others a place on the bench would rejuvenate us and signal towards the future.

Ralf has been set to fail since been appointed as an interim as the players couldn't care less to play for him when they know someone else is going to come after the season ends.

He has like 0 autorithy as he couldn't even sign a single player in winter and no one knows who's going to be the next manager, so the future is very uncertain for Manchester United.

I wouldn't start Hannibal but I'd give him a bench spot and maybe 20/30mins - I watched him at AFCON and he didnt look ready for senior football

I'm more excited about Garnacho actually

Question
If a PL team wins the CL, will England have 5 teams in the CL next season

With the humiliation over the weekend we're now semi-officially out of the CL. Even though the EL hasn't been put to bed, there's not much of a difference between the EL and whatever this new "conference league" is. We need to view next season as a fight for top four and not pinning it all down the EL to get back into the CL.

With that, we still want to finish the season strong but also so who's got what. There's no point in bothering with Pogba any longer, so let's bring up Hannibal. Rotate Dalot and AWB, and Shaw and Telles. More of Lindelof and less of Maguire. How about Bailly? Bruno and Fred need to grind it out. And Rashford, as crap as he's been this season, shouldn't be allowed to sit it all out for the final eight matches. Bring on a few youngsters, within reason. Club supporters deserve pay good money to watch players who care.

Norwich at home is the only game left out of the 8 we have that I'm reasonably confident we win.

The rest are all going to be very hard watches I think. Even Brentford at home will be tough for us on their showing at Chelsea.

Liverpool will tear us a new one as they will run us off the pitch.

Even that is no gimme remember 2015 under LVG
