The Roland Garros Thread

Sharapova isn't all that (i'd take Kournikova anyday); she plays ugly tennis as well.

Even with the emergence of Ana Ivanović and the like, Henin-Hardenne is simply in another league to her fellow women players; i don't think they'll give Hardenne a problem though, Sharapova was never a great mover on the court and struggles with anyone who doesn't give her the freedom and time to play her forehand shot.

Whereas Hardenne covers space very well and has a near-perfect backhand as well to go with her all-round play.

Ivanović is very promosing though; think she will surpass Janković soon.

Looking forward to Federer vs Nadal hopefully; i think Djokovic has a chance to nick a set against Nadal but don't think he'll win it and with the way Federer has been playing i don't think Davydenko's got a chance.

Think that Nadal and Federer this time around might produce some fireworks; don't think Federer will get a better chance to win against Nadal than this year; he's on top form right now, as good as i've seen him play.

Thank you, I watched Game, set, Mats too...:D

But you selection for Kournikova ahead of Sharapova is beyond me...:wenger:

I think Federer will get it this time around, he's been excellent this tournement

Federer just beat Davydenko to reach his 8th grand slam final in a row.

Nice game for Federer that; don't think he stretched too much with it being sorted out in 3 sets but Davydenko made sure that Federer had to play some of his best tennis to get rid of him; and Federer has certainly improved his backhand and his claycourt tactics with more variety in play (e.g. using the backhand slice) rather than just relying on the forehand.

His concentration has improved but countering the top spin Nadal generates on the backhand is a more daunting task. Nadal versus Djokovic now. Hope Nadal gets through; Federer winning it against Nadal would have it a slightly more dramatic touch to it.

For me its evens going into the finals but i'd give Nadal the slight edge perhaps but Federer would fancy his chances more than ever this time around.

Feck Nadal is in the final. He would be the favourate, just looks amazing on clay. But its a big one for federer. Win this and probably establishes himself as the best ever. Has a chance of course, but needs to be at his best which he certainly didnt look against Davidenko, and has to start well.

Nadal has been much more flawless this year. Federer was better the last year. He has looked very iffy at times this time round

Nadal has the upper hand again and to an extent Federer needs to pull a monkey

I think Federer could beat Nadal this time but it's going to be great match

Think Nadal will win it. Reminds be a bit of the edberg/chang final some time back. If edberg'd won it he would have had all 4 slams but inspite of being 2 sets up (I think) and chang cramping, he just couldn't close it out. Also, if memory serves me right, he was the last player apart from Federer to get oh so close to winning all 4.

Edberg had a weird service. Not as weird as Karsten Braasch, but weird. I am not sure but he made 18 doublefaults is some grand slam final.

Yeah, the way he arched his back on the serve resulted in quite a few back problems later on in his career. Although, the kick it gave him, on the second serve especially, was what made him so succesfull at Wimbledon...and he was a fantastic volleyer of course. The double-faults, yeah the way he dragged his right foot so close to the baseline plagued him throughout his career.

I think if Roger doesn't win it this year he may not as he is about 5 years older than Nadal which makes a difference on clay. Nadal is not yet in his prime and could win it many more times. So I hope Roger does it and gets all 4. He is truly going to be a legend if not already one.

I really really hope Federer can win tomorrow. It`s a shame that he`s playing in the same era as Nadal, who is unbeatable on clay. Nadal will probably win tomorrow but if he doesn`t then Federer will rightly be crowned the best ever.

Federer is not the best ever because the rest of them are shite on all surfaces except clay. Even then the only serious competition is Nadal
Except he probably is. If he was around at Sampras' time the latter wouldnt have won as many as he did, not nearly. Hes made the competition look like crap in the last few years. Its just that on clay you have someone else who has broken all kinds of records and won back to back french open titles. If Federer does win this there isnt much doubt.

:wenger: How is that claim laughable?

He's 25 and won 10 grand slams already. He's reached 8 grand slam finals in a row. He's already a better player than Sampras was. I kind of hope he wins it today since it'll cement his place as the greatest ever. I doubt Laver was as good as Federer.

It's not a big claim, its what most people think is true, even player from those past era's. He just needs to do this, to prove a point, to make sure it isnt always held against him, to do what other greats have etc I still think he'll have more chances after this, just that hes so close this time.

4-3 Nadal at the moment, he's just broken Federer's serve

Feck that wasn't on. Federer should've broken Nadal. Now Nadal's just gone and broken Federer.

Damn. 0-40 and Nadal comes back. What do you have to do to break him?

Federer doesn't look confident at the moment.
All his backhands are falling miles too short. As i type this Nadal hit an outrageous winner across Federer at the net. Federer needs to start doing that.

Federer finally breaks Nadal to go 4-3 up, he's looking alot more comfortable now

Nadal hanging on but Federer is now serving for the 2nd set. 5-4

Nadal's still going to take this set. Federers got an uphill battle. Crowd seem to be on his side.

Nadal 4-1 in the 3rd set

Nadal takes the 3rd, 6-3, he looks like he's going to win it.
2-1 in sets

Nadal is French Open Champions, wins it 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Pretty comfortable for him in the end
Federer will be disappointed he didn't play like he can, but Nadal is immense on this surface.
