Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I wouldn't say "fun" (you sicko!) but it held my interest. I think the story would sound great if someone just laid it out for you, such as:
A satanic devotee makes evil dolls that he gives to unsuspecting families. Over time the dolls possess the families which leads to everyone being murdered. A young FBI agent hunts this serial killer - but it turns out she's intimately connected with the killer and his plans.
And then I had some questions:
I'm not really sure how he put a piece of himself in each doll (?) with the metal orbs (?) Why didn't she just shoot her partner when he took his wife into the kitchen to murder her? She shot him a minute later anyway.
. I agree it did have a haunting tone. Definitely a horror film made for fans instead of trying to rope in teens.
oh, I had the same questions too. which I thought was frustrating at first but it’s also fine. I just don’t think everything can be answered when it comes to such movies. I liked the treatment of the story tbh. the way it was told made it more interesting than a more straightforward approach as you just put it.

Black Bag .... revisited.

I posted a review of this a few weeks ago where, because of certain expectations, I was underwhelmed. How wrong I was. I said I would watch it again and I just have. It's a very, very good film.

The cinematography, the sets, lighting, sound - all the technicals are spot-on. The acting, storyline and script are strong. It's a very clever film. It's a character-driven film where you have to concentrate on the dialogue. It's subtle rather than action packed. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind first time, but on second viewing I do not mind admitting I was wrong.

Recommend.

The filmmakers are in the house with you now, aren’t they? Don’t worry, help is on the way.

I want a gif of Nic saying Hail Satan and then smashing his face into the table. I think your take on it is very fair. It was creepy. My wife would have pulled the ripcord in the first act. I was tired both times I watched it, so I wasn’t fully engaged, which I would have been had I seen it in a theater. I think that’s why horror works so much better in theaters. I’d give this filmmaker a bigger budget for their next film.

The film had great tone and I was really enjoying it but the story shits the bed in the second half.

The director just made The Monkey. It was decent if you want offbeat humour. Again, the first half was much better than the second half.

1. Collateral
2. Minority Report
3. Edge of Tomorrow
4. The Color Of Money
5. Maverick

Collateral being an all time great film.

I'll be honest and say I don't "get" the mechanism this film hinged on. I don't understand why
Longlegs was better off or freed when dead, when his whole plan was to kill 13 families and then something something Satan something. I don't want to have to rewatch it so please just tell me.

I want to watch the horror movie where the dog is the only one who knows what's going on, Good Boy. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/good-boy-review-1236155279/ It's only 73 minutes long!

Overall it's quite sad and has a bit of a fatalistic feel to it, sort of underlined by Dafoe's resigned yet unjudging demeanour throughout (kind of "what will be, will be"), but there are true moments of poetry and beauty in it. That's what I meant by the "casts an empathetic eye" in my initial post on it, it's not misery porn and Baker seems to genuinely care about the subject matter.
Rewatched the film last night.
Your definitely spot on with empathetic eyes analysis.

The diner scene is has so many brilliant details. Halley at the same time is doing the role of the good mum while at the same using it as a way to punish her friend at work.

His 2015 film Tangerine(My personal favourite of his work)is similar and also easily one of the best representations of trans people in media.

We are like the scientists describing an elephant in the dark approaching it from opposite ends! Don't you like Sensitive Tom?
Hey walking around festive New York while looking for conspiracy cults is a type of sensitivity!

I did think about putting in The Colour Of Money but Top Gun is Yankee imperialism propaganda at its purest. Can’t think of another top Hollywood actor who has worked with many great directors.

I find the recent Mission Impossible films quite enjoyable, blows James Bont out of the water for my money. Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby are certainly wank-worthy.
While I haven't been watching the MI movies, they have to be more entertaining than the James Bond films, which have been bloated and underwhelming for years. The last good Bond was Craig's first one, Casino Royale. No Time To Die was 163 minutes, Spectre 148 minutes, Skyfall 143 minutes!

I thought you were joking! I was surprised

I recently rewatched the MI films, and agree they're enjoyable (though I didn't think the most recent one was great). I have no idea which one is which, but the one with Superman is particularly good.

Still think Magnolia is Tom Cruise's best performance.

Edge of Tomorrow
Collateral
Minority Report
Interview with a Vampire
Last Samurai

Actually tougher than I thought, left out some good movies.

Mickey 17
Really enjoyed the first two thirds of this but the film meanders a lot and many plot-threads get dropped for less interesting pivots, which didn't help the pacing of the film, not helped by the fact that this theme has been covered by this director a few times. The acting was hit and miss. Robert Pattison was really good but what the feck were Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette doing? Ruffalo is shite as expected but I'm disappointed in Collette, she's better than this. But I have to say that for the most part, it is a fun movie that is at least original. The world building was also solid and some fascinating characters, like Steven Yeun, who just needed more development 7/10

The Green Knight

A fantasy retelling of the medieval story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Really enjoyed the premise/set up with Dev Patel, who always puts in a shift. The cinematography was also splendid. However, once the main journey begins, it just slows down way too much and there were stretches where I was tempted to just check my phone. There were enough interesting points to draw me back in but this film needed to be 30 minutes shorter. Doesn't help that the protagonist is so passive throughout the film 5.5/10

Why do you say “Ruffalo was shite as expected”? I always thought he was a decent actor. Have you seen “You Can Count on Me”?

I think he's been good in stuff before but the last few things I've seen him in, he's been terrible, especially Poor Things. But no, haven't seen the one you have mentioned, I'll add it to my list.

I watched it a very long time ago, while trying to impress a girlfriend who was into arthouse movies. So definitely possible it hasn't passed the test of time! It may well not be your cup of tea. I do remember he gave a great monologue at the end though.

Ruffalo was good in Spotlight, 10 short years ago. And he was in Collateral, for the Cruisheads here, and he was in Windtalkers with Nicolas Cage, for Schweini! He's been in some shit that left me furious, though, such as Begin Again, which felt like an elaborate prank, and the entire Marvel oeuvre.

Zodiac, Eternal Sunshine, Shutter Island...quite the resume.

Tom Cruise was fantastic in Magnolia. One of his best imo.
*Hugs*

Ruffalo seems to have embraced his silly era and I enjoy it. He's hardly gonna be remembered for decades, but he's a decent actor, with a few strong performances and a solid resume.

Really enjoyed Mickey 17, yeah it meanders a little in parts but that's very symptomatic of Boon Jong Ho and Korean cinema which has a different rhythm to it, it's not unpleasant. All the performances were great, Pattinson is truly a top actor and Naomie Ackie has proper star power. Enjoyable and fun.

Sad about what you said about Green Knight Schweini, it's one of the best films of these past few years for me, and will age extremely well. It's mesmerising, poetic, hypnotic, and gorgeous to look at.

All those things are true and to be fair, I was really enjoying it and also really enjoyed certain moments but at times I just felt like it was dragging.

I'll probably remember it fondly over time because it's memorable but I was so tired by the end

I loved the Green Knight. Hypnotic, dream like and weird. One of my favourite films of that year. I was really drawn in by it. Maybe worked better in the cinema?

Probably. I think the main issue is the film doesn't give you much and therefore required you to have knowledge of this coming into it. I only found out Merlin was in this after the fact for example.

But it was stunning.

What's with the dissing of the MI films? I haven't seen the newest but the previous 3 were all quality action films.

Also MI2 is the greatest film of all time DOVES FLYING

Yeah, Mark Ruffalo has a pretty solid filmography with a lot of really good performances. Apart from You Can Count On Me, he's also very good in The Kids are All Right, Foxcatcher and even something like Dark Waters. I remember liking The Normal Heart as well, even though I don't remember much from the actual film.

I won't take any dissing of the Green Knight. It's an excellent movie. Dev Patel and Ralph Ineson were superb in it.

"Now...off with your head".
