Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Always Be My Maybe
Needed something light after Chernobyl and When They See Us. This delivered. Great leads, funny moments, sweet story and an amazing cameo 7/10

Murder Mystery
A New York cop and his wife go on a European vacation to reinvigorate the spark in their marriage, but end up getting framed and on the run for the death of an elderly billionaire. Haven't seen an Adam Sandler film in many years so thought I'd stick this one on. Wasn't awful. Had some funny moments, especially in the first half of the movie and the mystery was decent, I was always guessing who the killer was. Fell kind of flat from the midpoint onwards but wasn't as bad as I'd anticipated 5.5/10

I watched this yesterday strangely enough and I was thinking the same 'what was the last Adam Sandler movie I saw'. I thought it was funny and hes defo better here than the OTT stuff weve seen with Rob.S

I gave that a thumbs down as soon as i saw Adam Sandler was in it, just so it wouldn't show up in recommendations and what not. It might a good diversion for an hour but i feel like his movies are so soulless, vacuous and pointless that I should boycott them in the hopes that hollywood moves onto someone with some vague talent or ambition and stop wasting money on the cnut.

yeah, lots of dumb comedies. The interactions between Sandler and Jen were just plain annoying at the beginning, but once the mystery begins the movie takes a slight upturn. Enjoyable if you could leave logic out of the TV room.

Agree with the ratings. Worth a time pass watch.

Watched Hiroshima, Mon Amour again this week and it was any bit as good as I remembered. Stunning visuals (Sacha Vierny might be the greatest cinematographer of all time) and Emmanuelle Riva‘s performance remains one of the most intense in the history of cinema. Such a mesmerising movie.

Have you seen Punch Drunk Love?

Crazy Rich Asians
After loving Always Be My Maybe, I thought I'd give this a shot. Worst thing I've seen since our game against Huddersfield 1/10

I AM MOTHER

Decent sci-fi watch with a predictable twist in the end. The screenplay and acting is good and the movie maintains the suspense very well despite being a bit slow paced. Despite low budget, the CGI is pretty good too.

6/10

Yup, its brilliant. Definitely doesn't help my point. I think 1 good movie in 40 ish isn't a great ratio though. And I think i'd give Paul Thomas Anderson most of the credit for it seeing as hes always pretty good.

Oh I'm not contradicting your overall point (I think he's a pretty shit actor and comes across as pretty lazy in his choices of films), but I was just wondering cos it's an interesting exception. PDL is a nice film that went mostly under the radar I think, and it was an out of character choice for Sandler I think.

I thought they had, which is why he's solely straight to Netflix these days. The modern version of straight to DVD.
He's undoubtedly being paid far too much for his current deal though.

I'll always have a soft spot for Happy Gilmore and Billy Maddison though.

Yeah, the Wedding Singer does it for me. They're all fairly copy and paste and I've had my fill of him a long time ago now. I think there was a point were he'd blatantly given up and stopped giving a feck too. He's a long way short of being talented enough to be entertaining when phoning it in.

It's not just that he happens to be in a quality film either, he's actually really great in it too. I wonder if the fact that PDL was a commercial dissapointment made him less eager to keep trying riskier/better stuff.

Toy Story 4. They've only gone and bloody done it again.

Was it ?

It been a white since I've the film(I think it's brilliant) but sandler character is a angry, awkward, almost mute character. Image if Happy Gilmore was well very depressed Gilmore.

Sandler performance is still great but I've always thought it was more PTA seeing the potenial in the character Sandler plays in almost all his other films(Well the older ones anyway)then Sandler changing things up.

Still it's been a long time since I seen the film.

Sandler tried to play different type of character in Reign on me (or something like that) with Don Cheadle. Wasn't great.

Return trip aeroplane films:

Beautiful Boy - look, it's fine. Carrell and Chalamet are very good. I'm just not sure it was worthy of adapting, even if the book is excellent.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? - look, it's fine. McCarthy and Grant are very good. I'm just not sure it was worthy of adapting, even if the book is excellent.

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse - completely excellent. I was blown away by the animation, I've never seen anything like it. Story and vibce reminded me of Infamous Second Son. Best Marvel film I've seen and I regret I didn't catch it at the cinema.

Mid-90s - somewhere between Kids and Lords of Dogtown. Neither of which anyone should bother emulating.

The Front Runner - didn't care about Gary Hart before, don't care about him after. There's some half-hearted commentary about power dynamics and the role of media in politics. Everyone is fine, good to see Bill Burr get some acting work.

I was justified in missing these at the cinema, Spiderman aside.

District 9
Watched this again. Still holds up really well. Such a fun sci-fi film. Well acted, good VFX, nice story. Just a really solid film all round 8.5/10

Polaroid

High school loner Bird Fitcher has no idea what dark secrets are tied to the mysterious Polaroid vintage camera she stumbles upon, but it doesn't take long to discover that those who have their picture taken meet a tragic end. Based off a short film of the same name and sitting on the shelf for years due to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, this movie had a decent concept and an ok narrative and the characters didnt constantly do dumb shit as per the average horror movie but the main issue was that none of the scares worked, which at the end of the day is the purpose of a horror movie. The effects in the film also looked pretty cheap 4/10

Philadelphia
Had never seen this before. Great performances from Hanks and Washington. The story was also touching but never felt too cliché 7.5/10

What We Do In The Shadows
A behind the scenes look at the lives of vampires. One of my favourite comedies. Love it 9/10

Toy Story 4 - Taken on it's own it's a pretty good children's movie, but you can't help but put it alongside the others and it just feels cold compared to them, especially the last one. Buzz is relegated to a side character, made to be a bit stupid and rarely do we get the chemistry between him and woody. The fork character kind of just exists, and key and Peele's characters are a bit annoying. The puppets were genuinely disturbing though.

I fecking loved this movie but am struggling with the TV series. One episode in and not sure if it's worth persisting. Which is really disappointing.
It’s not fantastic or anything but there is an episode which brings in the characters from the movie plus some big name actors in a council meeting of vampires or something. That was a funny episode but other than that, it was OK

Anybody know of a genuinely good film or documentary about Kurt Cobain, please?

South Central (1992)

Very good movie. Glenn Plummer's friend being addicted to drugs was sad to see.

First Reformed (2017)
Holy feck such a brilliant movie. Should have gotten more recognition at the Oscars. The Academy knows feck all. Ethan Hawke is a great actor, Schrader is a legend.
9/10

Booksmart is indeed very good, though Its not the genre defining landmark some are calling it. It is basically just a gender swapped Superbad, right down to Jonah Hill swapped out for his sister and a plethora of late 00s SNL cameos, but I think it is probably a slightly better film, on account of trying more arty stuff, and the leads actually feeling like friends who like each other, rather than an awkward bickering couple who don’t... Good hungover Sunday fare.

The Wind
A plains-woman faces the harshness and isolation of the untamed land in the Western frontier of the late 1800s. Shot really well and a great performance from the lead. Has some spooky suspense building too but a real slow burn and the pay off just isn't there. It's a lot of nothing happening which is fine but not what I was in the mood for. Feels like they padded the duration of the film due to a lack of budget. My score may be harsh due to the film not being what I expected from the trailer 3.5/10

The Wave (2015) -
Norwegian movie about a geologist and his family who gets caught in the middle of an 85-meter violent tsunami. The CGI is decent enough and is one of the better disaster movies to come out in the previous years. Focuses more on the human aspect of the disaster rather than the spectacle.
Available on Netflix too. Worth checking out if you like disaster movies - 7/10
