Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The end of Footloose is great too. All these hick kids become incredible dancers. Corny but very cool to watch the amazing dancing.

R.N7 prefers more sophisticated dance scenes like this one in Roadhouse.

The sexual tension between the three of them in this movie is quite spectacular.
But...but..you didn't even mention the dance sequence from Big Lebowski :(
I already made a post about the film on the last page, don't wanna repeat myself!

The Outsider
An epic set in post-WWII Japan and centered on an American former G.I. who joins the yakuza. I normally love Japanese gangster films and I don't mind Leto so thought I'd give this a whirl... what a mistake. Clearly a Japanese movie written by an American. It looked really nice but was so fecking slow, the stakes never seemed high, was devoid of any real conflict... just Jared Leto walking around acting hard. Shame, as the opening scene had me hooked but had absolutely no follow through 2/10

Bicentennial Man

An android endeavors to become human as he gradually acquires emotions. Granted, I'm late to the party here, not sure who this film is made for. Too slow and boring for children and too silly and no depth for an adult to enjoy. Overly long and quite frankly a chore to get through 2/10

Gi-Eok-Ui Bam (Forgotten)
A man loses his memory after being kidnapped for 19 days, and his younger brother is determined to seek the truth surrounding the mystery of the kidnapping. Is his brother who he portrays? Mysteries linger after his return. WOW. After watching that junk The Outsider, I wanted to watch something that's authentically Asian, and found this on Netflix, and oh my god absolutely loved it. It's a mystery thriller with a dash of horror elements thrown in and I was hooked from beginning to end... it really stayed with me long after I finished it. There was one plot point that seemed a bit unrealistic but I'm not an expert in
hypnotherapy
So not sure if what was revealed is possible or not. I just went with it anyway and probably enjoyed this more than any film I've seen this year so far.

Don't want to say too much as the whole enjoyment of this film is watching it's awesome plot unravel. It's on Netflix so no excuse not to watch it. Would highly recommend 9.5/10

Yes, I saw this and was bowled over by it. I've been seeing a lot of South Korean movies recently and when they are good they are really up there with the best, whatever the genre - they often knock Holywood for six. Their industry is really booming right now in terms of quality. Films are well financed, mainly due to the foreign flim quota, which limits the number of foreign films that can be shown per theatre per year. I wrote a review about Forgotten on Netflix:

Forgotten is beautifully crafted, hugely atmospheric, well written, well acted and supremely directed. The pace, cinematography and story harmonize fantastically; all supported by a sensual mix of menacing, emotive and melancholy music. The story twists and turns keeping you on your toes and you can't help but be sucked into the dark, frightening, confusing journey the film takes you on. It's not easy to protect 'surprises' in a movie, but this one does it. Top marks all round.

I didn't like Hail, Ceasar! but I did like the Channing Tatum dance scene.

There's also quite a good one in Lost River, involving Ben Mendelsohn.

Can't say I recommend the rest of the film though.

Annihilation (2018)

Available on Netflix. So after a thoroughly depressing night of football, I thought I'd lift the mood by some quality celluloid. I didn't realise Annihilation had been picked up by Netflix, so was more than happy to give this a whirl seeing as I was dying to see this film anyway. With some big names like Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tessa Thompson, it follows a group of top specialists in their field sent to investigate a phenomenon of unknown origin that is threatening the existence of life on earth as we know it. We later find out that they all have their own reasons for taking on this perilous mission.

Perhaps I was not in the right frame of mind to appreciate this film but it was a bit of a slow burner, occasionally interspersed with some visually stunning scenes and some edge-of-the-seat thrills and spills. Not much is given away or explained at the beginning of the film so you have to kind of keep up to get those "ah, that makes sense!" moments as it plays out.

Jennifer Jason Leigh was thoroughly underused and a bit wooden in the portrayal of her character in this film and Portman always appears to have this single dimension to her roles but she was pretty decent in this. The story jumps around quite a bit and has the obligatory flashbacks, which seems to be very common in sci-fi movies, allowing the viewer to piece everything together and figure out what is going on for themselves, though you may need a couple of viewings to do this.

A film of this type can not avoid the glaring plot holes either and those smh moments but overall it's an intelligent, stylish sci-fi flick that threatens to get going but just never quite getting there.

I'm giving this a 6/10.

Do you know if I can use my Nord vpn to get UK Netflix?

Don’t have Nord but the VPN I use allows you to set what country you’re based in, and therefore use any Netflix I want. I assume Nord would be the same.

Will check this one out probably. Just a bit sceptical about the very few number of votes on imdb.

It's not extremely similar to Oldboy is it?

Yeah I saw it on the big screen a while back, in a double showing with The Thing. Was a great double.

All of those Cronenberg films and The Thing haven't dated and held up well unlike many horror films from that period. The effects in The Thing are still good enough to keep you in the story.

Looking Glass
A couple buy a desert motel where they find that strange, mysterious events occur. I was quite excited for this after watching the trailer and the fact that the great Nic Cage stars in it. He does really well in this erotic thriller that has a great, slow build set up. However, the film completely shits the bed in the final act and just fizzles out. All the intriguing questions and mysteries that are presented in the opening two acts don't pay off and some are ignored completely. The visual style was also all over the place, with strange lighting decisions. There's a good film in there somewhere, just wish there was a more talented writer to bring it out 5/10

Eden Lake

Wow. I don’t easily scare and I’m not squeamish but I do believe this is the most horrific, harrowing film I have ever seen, moreso than stupid shite like Serbian film as you actually take this film seriously.

I imagine many of the horror/thriller/slasher film buffs on here have seen this one, but it’s worth a watch. Not for the faint hearted though, and I do mean that - It’s fecking grim.

I've still not seen this. I might need to rectify that in the near future. Fassbender aint it?

Been wanting to watch this for years. Had a big crush on Kelly Reilly as well.

What's she become? And for that matter, what has Gemma Arterton become? There was a window in time which lasted like 9 months where she seemed to be in every other film.

Being seen in the second season True Detective didn't do her career any favours I imagine. You like her because of those corny Erasmus movies, right?

I was young leave me alone

Those films (Auberge Espagnole, Poupées Russes, Casse-tête chinois) were quite big in France, especially the first one. Have you watched them?

I'm giving this a 6/10.

Fair review, I watched it a few nights ago and some scenes are still lingering in my mind. Not a bad sci-fi movie, I'd give it 6.5/10

I loved it. I think Jarmusch is on a great run even though people seem to have lost interest in him.

Annihilation - brainy, psychedelic, horrifying sci-fi from Alex Garland. It's ambiguous and difficult and visually inventive and has a couple of absolutely terrifying scenes, including one with a beasty with a talent for mimicry that's as scary as anything I've seen in any film in a long time.

Paramount dropped it because it tested badly with the kinds of idiots they round up for market research and so it won't be screening in theatres anyway but the States which is a massive fecking shame.
I watched it yesterday and enjoyed it. I'm not quite sure what to make of the ending though.
