Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Their film names are fantastic, you're never in any doubt as to which exact film they're 'based on'

I think part of the idea is that grandma wants to know what to buy little Jimmy for his birthday or Christmas, and gets told that he wants Justice League. Then she's at the shop and sees League of Justice, and thinks "ah, that's probably what they meant."

Or maybe she just hates Jimmy.

IT (2017)

I like the original, but I think this one is better.
Tim Curry's Pennywise was very good, but I think Bill Skarsgard is every bit as good.
Acting is good, they have tweaked the story a bit but for the better, it is darker that the original.
Cant wait for part 2.
I enjoyed it.

Watched 28 weeks later last night as I haven't seen it in a few years. Had quite fond memories of it but I was left disappointed, it either aged pretty badly or I just remember it being better, but bar a few decent scenes it's kind of crap.

I did the same last week and yeah I still like it a lot(The shopping scene is brilliant)but I was surprised how cheap and well shite the film looked.

Atomic Blonde

A badly made John Wick.

Bad plot, worse screenplay and the background score is just overwhelming that it feels like watching a move in a nightclub. Action sequences are so fake and random events happen just in time to help move the movie along. Very contrived.

The only rating this move deserves is for Charlize and Sofia. Lot of skin, couple of boob peek and one make-out scene between them to top it off. Despite everything else deserving a negative rating, I suppose this alone makes it worth a watch!

5/10

Le clair de terre - A beautiful, wistful film with really impressive fragmentary editing. Makes one wanna drop everything and sail towards Tunisia.

Violent Summer - Jean Louis Tringinant has an affair with an older widow during the latter stages of WW2. Very tastefully done, not as melodramatic as many films of that era, luckily.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) : Probably the only musical I can bear re-watching aside from my favorite, The Fiddler on the Roof. These Disney classics were always big hits at the time, but this one stands apart. Characters, humor, darkness...has it all.

The Saint (2017)

I had no idea they had made this, I was not expecting much but it was actually not all that bad.
Just like the series it was cheesey, Adam Rayner was OK as Simon Templar.
It even had the other 2 Saints in it, Ian Ogilvy and Rodger Moore.
Just like the series , it poked fun at itself, I enjoyed it a lot.

6/10

Let Her Out
A woman has an accident and then is having nightmarish visions, which she thinks is some sort of tumour side effect but soon realises it's her evil twin trying to take over her body. Poorly written, badly acted borefest. Has one quite disturbing scene towards the end and enough gore/self mutilation to appease body horror fans (possibly) but it just wasn't for me. I was bored throughout 1/10

I think you're talking about 28 days later. Which even though it's aged is still really good imo.
Whoops, your right. I was watching it on some god awful sci fi channel so that didn't help but I still think in terms of how the film looks, compared with Boyles others works I find it looks muddy and very low budget. Still looks aside I agree it's aged brilliantly and pretty influenced almost anything zombie related that came after it.

I saw the trailer few months ago and it felt like a cheap rip off of "enter the void". Can people just stop doing the 'strobe effect' in trailers. Edit: I meant the trailer for Heaven Knows What.

The latest Thor film is a lot of fun, pure entertainment done at its best. Doesn't take itself seriously for a second, the (simple) plot moves along nicely, the action scenes are well done, and the cast is altogether quite classy. One of the best Marvel films. I'd rate it Jeff Goldblum/10

Where is everyone watching Good Time ? I can only find one showing in the UK and it's in some small chain cinema in London.

Can't find anywhere showing it - most sites give the release date as 3/11 but I've just seen on Digital Spy it's being released 17/11.

Wanna see this, as I LOVED Heaven Knows What.

Aftermath
Two strangers' lives become inextricably bound together after a devastating plane crash. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who pulls in a decent performance of stoic grief, the film was very, VERY slow and does nothing new, instead it feels one note, which is a shame as it could have tried a bit harder as it pointed to the inevitable meeting between a grieving father/husband and the man who accidentally killed his family. Ends with a whimper but there are some emotional moments that weren't overly Hollywoodized. Like Arnie in roles like this and Maggie 5.5/10

American Made

The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair. Tom Cruise and Domhnall Gleeson were terribly miscast, should have swapped roles. I love most of Doug Liman's films and whilst this was ok, it only showed the character played by Tom Cruise as amazing with no character flaws, which is what seperates this from classics like Goodfellas and Wolf Of Wall Street. Not horrible but a one watch film 6/10

It's available erhm...online.

I got some nice The Killing of a Chinese Bookie vibes from the trailer.
Oh.

Yeah I'm hoping its going to get a wider release as I really can't be fecked to make the trip all the way up to London also it seems to be only showing at around mid day which seems very odd.

Death of Stalin

I saw this yesterday and it is still creeping me out a bit. please take note this is NOT a comedy, it is a horrific and awful depiction of the actions of monsters, and draws upon the farcical nature of their behaviour. If you go expecting belly laughs you will be mistaken.

The humour is of the darkest possible hue and has some truly nasty moments, most of which centre around Beria, played by Simon Russell Beale in what should surely be an Oscar winning performance.

It has its lighter moments, many of which come from Stalin's son and the Yorkshire General Zhukov, but these are soon followed by the next horrific event.

The film artificially condenses the timelines a little, but the fact remains that these are all factually based, even the ice hockey team!

It's a remarkable achievement as a film as it actually manages to combine the 2 aspects without it jarring, paying the necessary respect to the horrors involved in the story. Just imagine if they tried to actually make "Springtime for Hitler" but include aspects of the holocaust. The closest film i can think of would be "Life is sweet" which had a light-hearted approach to a terrible story.

This film however does not go for sweetness at all, it comments on the eternal backstabbing nature of the politics of fear and leaves the coppery taste of blood in your mouth.

Have you guys seen Starship Troopers 3?

I just found it. I loved the first and could actually unlike most accept the second, even though the nosedive in quality was severe.

Reviews I read claims that 3 is better than 2, which doesn't take much tbf.

Watched Southern Comfort for the first time in ages the other day. 1981 film about a US National Guard squad on an exercise in the Louisiana swamps who get lost then run afoul of some local Cajun trappers and end up fighting for their lives. It's set in 1973 and is often seen as a metaphor for the type of conflict the US troops encountered in Vietnam, trying to fight an enemy they can't see most of the time and struggling to find their way in terrain that is alien to them and the homeground of the Cajun trappers.
The closing scene has sparked a lot of debate about what actually happened, but if you look around you can usually find a pretty succinct explanation on sites like IMDB etc. after watching.

Yes seen it. Much better than two. But so are most things to be fair

Wind River (2017): 7/10

Wow, an actual good thriller/crime flick that isn't based on a comic! A little slow but the writing was quite strong.
I just don't understand why
Matt sort of escalated the fight by hitting the other guys too rather than trying to maintain peace in the room.

Your Name: Engrossing and well put together anime that does a really good job of holding together both its plot and characters. Beautifully well drawn throughout with good occasional use of CGI I’ve had this for a while but only got around to watching it probably due to the recent talk of a Hollywood live action remake (not sure what they can do to improve it but I’ll wait and see). Begins with a simple enough body swap plot that plays out with plenty of the traditional gender swap shenanigans, however what really makes this a little bit special for me was the twist in the tale which is well handled and adds a real sense of urgency towards the end although I felt it fell just short of striking a perfect tone at the end. A really good watch that will probably soon be tainted by a mediocre Hollywood remake, well worth catching whilst still the only pristine version in existence.

7.5/10

Just watched Capture, kill, Release and would give it a 6.5/10, pretty entertaining but could have been better.

Also just watched Raw and thought it was brilliant, a decent 8.5/10, i lolled when her sister woke up.
