Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Blue Velvet

First venture into Lynch's work after binging through Twin Peaks. Was very good - MacLachlan does well in the main role and the whole thing has that slightly surreal, almost theatrical and over-the-top quality too it with some very, very dark moments. Think I'll move onto Mulholland Drive next.

Gerald's Game
Mixed bag for me. Loved the idea, the acting (specifically from Gugino) was on point and there were scenes where I was watching through my fingers. However, it felt a bit too long at points, where it really slows down and I absolutely hated the ending 6/10

Just re-watched War for the Planet of the Apes, enjoyed it much more this time. Thought it was good when I saw it originally, but was almost expecting a full on war movie, it was a lot more subtle than that, I didn't really "get it" at the time. Woody Harrelson was excellent in the "Colonel Kurtz" role, Andy Serkis is superb again as Caesar, but it really is a great movie with a lot of references to human nature, among other things :

Influences :

At New York Comic-Con 2016, Reeves explained that he and Bomback were influenced by many films before writing. He said, "One of the first things that Mark and I did because we had just finished Dawn was that we decided to watch a million movies. We decided to do what people fantasize what Hollywood screenwriters get to do but no one actually does. We got Fox to give us a theater and we watched movie after movie. We watched every Planet of the Apes movie, war movies, westerns, Empire Strikes Back... We just thought, 'We have to pretend we have all the time in the world,' even though we had limited time. We got really inspired."[33]

Additionally, during production, Reeves and Bomback sought broader inspirations from films like Bridge on the River Kwai and The Great Escape. Feeling that there was a need to imbue Biblical themes and elements, they also watched Biblical epics like Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. The influences and inspirations were made evident in the relationship between Caesar and Woody Harrelson's Colonel, a military leader with pretensions toward godhood. Reeves has compared their relationship to the dynamic between Alec Guinness's British Commander and Sessue Hayakawa's prison camp Colonel in Bridge on the River Kwai. Another comparison is in Caesar's journey to find the Colonel, flanked by a posse of close friends – a situation Reeves explicitly tied to Clint Eastwood's war-weary soldier in The Outlaw Josey Wales.[23] Influences from the film Apocalypse Now, notably Harrelson's character and his Alpha-Omega faction being similar to Colonel Kurtz's renegade army, were also noted by several journalists.[34][35][36] Harrelson has also acknowledged the similarities and inspiration.

Was planning to go and see The Snowman - not read the book - but, although I don't always pay too much attention to reviews if I like the look a film, I am a bit hesitant now with it being widely panned as a total disaster. Not sure...

I just watched it, wouldn’t call it a disaster but it’s a fairly run of the mill Scandi noir story directed by an overqualified director. Definitely something that would have been more fitting for a television series. Alfredsons directing and visuals just felt kinda wasted. Also, Fassbender just isn’t believable as an alcoholic, down on his luck detective. He’s way too handsome and ripped. I got kinda sick of seeing that green jacket after a while too.

And speaking of questionable casting, what hell has happened to Val Kilmer? His head is square shaped and out of proportion with the rest of his body, he can hardly speak anymore as well.

Rebecca Ferguson looks a lot prettier now than she did back in her Ocean Ave days.

.

Have you watched the documentary about the making of Dr Moreau? It's great, and he's apparently an absolute loon.

He was great in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang though

Still doing some pretty great stuff though

Shock Wave
Chinese? version of Hurtlocker in the City/Speed. No English subtitles so didn't really know what the hell was going on except that I really enjoyed it. Give it a watch 8/10

War For The Planet Of the Apes
What war? Was waiting for the 'War' till the movie ended. All the action in the movie was in the beginning and in the trailers already then the movie went all Kuntakinte with apes mumbling till the end. Expected more from a movie with 'War' in the title considering how much action was in the first two. 5/10

I loved that bit about Brando shouting something like "There's been a robbery at Woolworths!"

 That whole bit, and indeed everything Brando-related, is incredible. As is the original Director sneaking on set as an extra in a Halloween mask. It's like AN's Hearts of Darkness doc done as a Mel Brooksian farce!

They might finally be making it with the original director ... but it'll never be as barmily entertaining as the ice bucket midget butler Brando version. I'm pretty sure Mini Me in Austin Powers only exists because of that. Late 90s Popular culture and modern day online casino adverts have a lot to thank it for.

War For The Planet Of the Apes
There wasn't a war really, maybe the odd battle, and the plot didn't make much sense. Woody Harrleson's impression of Barndo's Cournel Kurtz was also somewhat odd in the context of the film. Meh. 4/10

I think Renner gets short thrift because he's a little bit typecast. He put in a really soulful performance in American Hustle whilst everyone else was cavorting about in fake pot bellies and perms.
He gets short shrift for being in that Bourne abomination.

Nah, sounds interesting though, I've heard a lot of weird stories from that production.

Yeah, he was good in that, strange that it didn't give him a career resurgence.
I had such high hopes. Y U do tis to me Tomas Alfredson :(
Hopefully it'll still be a box office hit despite being pants, so he can focus on his Brothers Lionheart adaptation again.

Ahh, that explains it. Thought it had something to do with plastic surgery first.

Is this film supposed to have sub titles when the apes speak amongst themselves?

Finally got to watch Blade Runner 2049.

The star of the movie is definitely Roger Deakins. Stunning cinematography and if he doesn’t win the oscar for this then he’s never going to. Denis Villeneuve obviously takes some credit for this, also. In conjunction with Deakins he’s managed to create a world that's every bit as real and visceral as the original. Some truly gorgeous images throughout this movie.

Secondly, the acting is superb. Harrison Ford is the best I’ve seen him and i’m a big fan of Ryan Gosling. He’s a very subtle actor who manages to bring pathos to a character through very subtle facial motions. I know some people take against this type of acting, but there's no histrionics which i appreciate. The biggest stand out in the movie though is Sylvia Hoeks who plays Luv. Absolutely superb performance.

Saying all that, i don’t quite think the movie is quite the masterpiece that it’s been portrayed to be. I’m a huge fan of Villeneuve, but his work does often leave me feeling a little cold. I was often looking for something to grasp onto, and i could never quite grab it. That’s not to say the movie was boring, or a case of style over substance, but it would be a criticism nonetheless.

Overall i really did liked it though. Perhaps a little too long, but still a fantastic film.

8/10

I've watched it again, and unequivocally, RoboCop is a masterpiece in film making. The writing for a film from the 80's is scarily accurate. Paul Verhoeven + Ed Neumeier equals filmic genius. Starship Troopers, Total Recall and RoboCop.

fecking wow.

ples dont mention showgirls, thx.

Robocop is fantastic, I never tire of watching it. Bitches leave! All three you mention are top notch action films.

Alien Covenant
God knows why they made another one, further cheapening the series. I guess Fassbender is decent as the creepy robot, but the CGI is crummy and the ending seriously predictable.
It passed some time on a flight, but little originality and kind of preachy too.
4.5/10

War For The Planet Of The Apes
Not a big fan of this series normally (enjoyed only Rise) but absolutely loved this. A breath of fresh air from the endless stream of brain dead blockbusters. Glad it wasn't this 'all out war' that the trailer teased 8.5/10

There's a few Verhoeven films that I need to watch again and re-evaluate, namely Robocop and Starship Troopers

I watched Basic Instinct again a few months ago and loved it, add to that his dutch film The Fourth Man which was also really good. I have his breakthrough film Turkish Delight lined up as well.

I thought Showgirls definitely had something, despite all it's failings, it's still a much better watch than Total Recall which is complete pants. Whatever vision Verhoeven brought to the table was completely undone by the cheesy Schwarzenegger-isms.

Mulholland Drive

In spite of the many intersecting narratives, found it easy enough to follow for the first 1hr and 40 mins or so...was confused by its reputation as a mindfeck of a film. Then the rest of it happened...having read up a bit more though I think I sort of understand what was going on.

Also read that there were originally plans for it to be a TV series, and you can see tracings of that within the film since there are certain characters/stories which appear interesting but don't go anywhere as such as the main one becomes more and more prominent. Still, they help add to the general atmosphere of the film all the same.

Completed it m8. Be interesting to see how Franco's remake of such a transcendental piece of cinema goes.

This one's a strange, lonely and slightly trippy film.

Sweet as a nut. I started to watch The Handmaiden but don't wanna get halfway through and fall asleep cos it actually looks proper decent like.

I'm repeating myself but for anyone with a hankering for good Ruski flick check out Tesnota. It's a treat.
