Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I watched Get Out and thought it was brilliant. It smartly blended the subtle observational stuff with more broad comedy elements to create a creepy and hilarious satirical horror. Witty and intelligent in the use of it's wide genre vocab too - referential but reverential.

The complicated plot stuff towards the end was an unnecessary convolution, and as much as I love her, I thought the presence of Catherine Keener provided a degree of star power that jarred and detracted. The film was maybe to tightly contained for that type of Christopher Lee appearance.

Given the hype, I feared it might have been one of those twitter/Grauniad approved bits of feeble, pseudo-subversive bullshit (Lemonade, Crash, Amy Schumer stuff) but no, it's a smartly scripted film with solid filmmaking chops on show. Stick it up there on the board with Prevenge.
Whats Prevenge? Is it a recent film?

Alien Covenant
Big step up from Prometheus. Some tense moments and some gloriously violent ones but the film was quite unoriginal, didn't bring much to the franchise, had little to no character development and the best set pieces were stolen from other films within the alien franchise. The first third was also really slow and boring. The action scenes were fun though 6/10

I didn't like Lion much, it all felt a bit flat
Yeah, could have done with some explosions and fight scenes.;)
Watched it last night on dvd. Really enjoyed it. The fact that it's based on a true story made it more gripping.
The boy Saroo was great and Dev Patel did a great job too.

Vampire’s Kiss - A rather tripe film that transcended to another realm through Cage's performance.

Violent Cop - Very accurate title. Kitano's debut feature, maybe his most neo-noirish effort. It might have worn it's Dirty Harry influence on it's sleeve a little too much but the trademark deadpan nihilism was on point as usual. I could watch Kitano slap people in bathrooms for hours.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Very fast paced and quite entertaining. Feels choppy sometimes, and CGI is not very good at times. But if you like Guy Ritchie, give this a watch. 7/10 for me.

Good to hear...been wanting to see it.

Bizarre timing. I saw an ad for it yesterday and came in here to ask if anyone has seen it!
Shame it sounds underwhelming.

It's not awful but nothing special either. Id wait for it to be on one of those pesky torrent sites if I were you.

Cheers, will do. Tbf, Aliens IV etc had already lowered expectations by a few notches.

Alien Covenant Enjoyable and much better than Prometheus (what isn't?). Decent action and a good story but you also got the feeling that it was a film reverse engineered to link the turd that was Prometheus to the original film. Forgettable characters/poor character development spoil what could have been great. Fastbender was great as expected but the final plot "twist" was so obvious as to be a bit annoying when it finally arrived.7/10

Looked really shit from the preview.

Saw The Birth of a Nation last night and was pleasantly surprised. It's way better than 12 years a slave, for me. Nate Parker was brilliant.

I enjoyed it but it was just another half decent horror film.

Looked really shit from the preview.

Soundtrack is amazing, acting is decent, Guy Ritchie trademarks work quite well at times, and some of the action is good.

Having said that, there are some nonsensical parts and overall it just feels like it should have been longer and some parts more fleshed out. I know half of the Caf will absolutely hate it, especially those who don't like Ritchie, but I was quite entertained.

Pirates of the Caribbean - Salazar's Revenge - Saw the advance screening this afternoon. It was really good and recommend that people watch it. Up there with 'The Curse Of The Black Pearl'.

I recognize his name and I skimmed his filmography to see if had seen him in anything, was surprised that I had only seen 2-3 bad films that I don't really remember him being in.

Rip Torn was jailed for drunkenly breaking into a bank with a firearm in 2010, which is an appropriately ludicrous crime.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Sleepless (2017)

Intelligent, high octane thriller starring Jamie Foxx. Has all the usual ingredients that you would expect in a film of this type; on-the-edge cop with estranged family back story, internal police corruption, powerful crime and drug bosses etc.,etc. Most of the action takes place in the casino with Jamie Foxx's character up against some mobsters who swipe his son after some of their 'product' goes missing. Twists and turns ensue as he battles not only the mobsters but the crooked cops in the LAPD. Was a great movie with enough variation on the formula to keep you engaged. Plenty of action which never lets up throughout the whole movie. Because this type of movie has been done to death, you kinda know how it's going to play out but still worth the watch nonetheless. Foxx is pretty good in this.

I'm giving this a 8/10.
Watched this over the weekend. I give it a 6.5/10. Fun movie to watch, a few plot holes but a good action flick.

He also hit Norman Nailer with an hammer during an improvised fight scene and got a bit of his ear chewed off.

He's also cousins with Sissy Spacek I learned just now.

I remember him in The Larry Sanders show. God, he looks bloody rough in that pic.
Great name too.

I've just spent the past hour and a half watching The Neon demon and I'm devastated that there's still another 25 minutes left. It wants so hard to be visual eye candy but the photography isn't even particularly captivating. Avoid at all costs.

For relevant comparison, I watched Nocturnal Animals last night which was a lot more pleasing on the eye and is just a way better film in general.

Been on a quick film binge...

Watched Get Out earlier. One of the best films I've seen in ages, and definitely one of the best horror films I've ever seen. Creeped me out in a way few ever have. The two housekeepers were just.... Had a smoke before so that might have help absorb more than I usually am but god damn that was good. Also Daniel Kaluuya is a star.

They're rebooting Hellboy apparently.

Will be tough to beat the now "original" two... which are two of the finest (and probably overlooked) comic book films around.

Alien: Covenant

Decent offering by Mr.Scott from the Alien franchise. Quite enjoyed it to be fair. The tension and 'action' for want of a better word is considerably ramped up from the previous Prometheus effort, which despite a lot of deserved criticism, I still found enjoyable. I agree with what others have said though about the first part being a bit laboured and slow but once the critters are introduced, things begin to take off. There were a few jump-in your-seat moments (for me anyway) and enough gore in keeping with the tone of the movie. No standout performances but the acting was convincing enough to not be a distraction (Idris Elba's accent anybody??). I don't think the giddy heights of the Alien & Aliens masterpieces will ever be achieved again but for anyone new???? to the franchise, it's a decent standalone movie.

I'm giving this a 6.5/10.

The Dark Tapes.

mixture of horror, sci-fi, myth, mystery and thrills told as four interlocking tales in one intelligent anthology. Ghosts, spirits, creatures, demons and more from the paranormal world collide with rational curiosity.
Found footage of 4 short films which interlocks four different tales of creatures, demons, ghosts and other things in the paranormal world.
It is a strange film and if I am being honest, did not have a clue what the feck was going on.

3/10

Get Out.

A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend's mysterious family estate.
I liked this , I liked it a lot, good story well acted, with a nice twist, but you did see it coming.
This was not a horror film, I would say more of a Hitchcock type thriller.
My only problem was the ending, it was rubbish, but that does not stop it being a good watch.

7/10

American Exorcism

Damon Richter thought he left the world of possessions, exorcisms, and evil behind until an old friend arrives with frightening information about his estranged daughter knowing that only his otherworldly skills can save her.
Possession films are my favorite , but like so many other, this is just not very good.
This one has a different way to get rid of the devil, they try and beat it out !
After narrowly surviving a harrowing possession, Damon Richter was left with abnormal abilities that allow him to help those fellow souls similarly tormented. Damon has embraced these powers for good until a routine exorcism goes terribly wrong forcing his family to suffer greatly.
Could not finish it, piss poor.

1/10

Sphere.

A spaceship is discovered under three hundred years' worth of coral growth at the bottom of the ocean.
Dustin Hoffman, Sharron Stone and Samuel L Jackson in this underwater sci-fi /horror film.
Decent enough, but for Underwater Sci-Fi not a patch on The Abyss.

6/10

Apparently the ending was changed and much more depressing.

Split

Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

Fantastic ! James McAvoy was outstanding, has was Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey.
This film will not be to everybody's liking.
The only bit I did not get was Bruce Willis at the end . Why ? maybe I missed something.
