Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

True, for the wrong reasons. Maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind but I found it the most pretentious load of garbage I'd ever seen.
I loved it, but I know it's very divisive. It's just that looking at that list of best pictures nominees, it's the one I'd say wasn't forgettable - whether you loved it or hated it.

Yeah I'd agree with that and as I say I was maybe not in the right mood for it. The story and the scenes involving actors were fine but the impressionistic time & space stuff left me stone cold at the time, to the extent that I felt cheated for even bothering with the story at all. I should give it another chance.

nah. It's rubbish. Hardly a movie... it's just an experience (a boring one).

Even Sean Penn came out saying the film is crap.

He left out my Lord Lucan thread, an incredible omission considering it's a household name...like Domestos.

Baffled by the La La Land backlash if I'm honest. It's a wonderful film that will be watched for decades, there's a reason why it was so popular with so many people. Wonderfully shot, directed and acted too. It deserves all the praise it's gotten, and anyone who thinks it bland was either predisposed to hate it or doesn't have a heart.

I hope Moonlight wins just to give it more publicity - La La Land's obviously not lacking there. I'm not sure if I can decide which was the better film, but I don't care about that too much either.

The Founder - watching this movie now....not bad...nice way to kill some time...but also reading about Kroc while watching....he was a piece of shit.

Saw Moonlight last night, thought it was very good. Maybe not 'film of the decade' good, but everything it sets out to achieve, it does quite well. The acting is superb (I'd heard the teenage version of Chiron was the best, and he's indeed excellent, but I also loved the adult version of him, the actor has a really touching fragility about him), the story is handled with a lot of subtlety, the cinematography is perfect. It's one of those films that will leave a long lasting impression on me as well, I think. Definitely recommended.

I initially thought he looked way to different from the teenage version but after a while you could really buy into that it was the same character due to the body language.

Manchester By The Sea
What a film. Great performances all round, very funny in places but heartbreaking in others. Felt very natural without ever overselling any of the emotions. I really enjoyed this and along with La La Land, this I feel is the best of the Oscar films this season 9.5/10

Watched Training Day the other day which I hadn't rewatched since it first came out more than a decade ago.

Denzel Washington really puts in an incredible performance, definitely the best I've ever seen from him. Great film, better than I remembered.

pretty damn GOAT movie

Man on Fire - 7/10
Good movie. The camera work was annoying at times, but it's a pretty decent story with good acting from Denzel Washington.

The Founder - 7/10
I always enjoy movies based on true events. This was another good one.

Gantz:O (2016)

Available on Netflix. What can I say?? A 90-minute televisual feast of the highest order to stimulate your senses. High quality Japanese animation about a group of people brought back to life to battle an onslaught of weird and wonderful creatures running havoc through parts of Tokyo and Osaka in what to them is played out like a videogame. They get points for the monsters they kill and can level up, upgrade weapons, confront boss monsters at the end of each level etc., etc. Ultimate prize is a return to their real lives if they achieve a certain number of points. Film has elements of 'Edge of Tomorrow' and 'Pacific Rim' if you like that sort of thing. Things are made a little clearer halfway through the movie, which was a relief as I was a little confused as to what was happening to start with. But that's just a minor point. I must say though, who ever got to design the creatures in this movie must have had a real blast or was smoking something...some of them are freakingly insane, probably some of the most awesome I've seen on film! Just when you think you've seen it all....something even bigger and more badass comes along! And they certainly know how to draw their women. Great action pieces (there's no let up) and cool weapons that will rival most live action films, this was really enjoyable. Animation is superb and near flawless, consigning early efforts like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within to the archives, and the sound through my 5.1 rocked! DO NOT fecking watch this on a tablet, laptop or phone. The bigger the screen, the better. It is subtitled with original Japanese dialogue but that's not a problem as my eyes were fixed to the screen the whole time. Blink and you'll miss something! An immersive and at times jaw-dropping experience. Will be searching out more gems of this calibre.

I'm giving this a 9/10.

There's a 2.5 hour live action film based on this series. It's decent.

So Assasin's Creed, is it acceptable as some mindless fun? I have never played any of the games and have no concept of the franchise.

I see the critics slaughter it, but they mostly slaughter every videogame adaption on pure reflex so won't bother with them.

Anyone seen it?

Saw it yesterday. Felt like the movie has no 3 acts or rather it's mostly the second act, followed by the third act, which ends quickly. Similar to Warcraft, I had the impression that the movie is more concerned with setting up a franchise than actually telling the story. Lots of movies do this these days. You could probably say the same about the Force Awakens. It has its moments when it looks nice and you think it might get to the point where it could be intriguing, but ultimately it's just forgettable. As mindless fun it might work for you, but I can't remember a scene where I genuinely laughed or grinned.

This is very very accurate. It seemed like a prequel or a chapter1 rater than an actual full satisfying story for a movie. If it was a series, it would be a good first episode.

Just saw this. It was decent. I hadnt seen the trailers so didnt really know much about it but it was done well.

Also saw Lion. Absolutely fantastic.

Just saw King of Kong - Fistful of Quarters, never realised I could want someone to beat a score at a 35 year old computer game so dearly. Some of that had to be staged though, the guy was cartoon-evil.

Split - Thought it was a pretty damn good film...McAvoy was excellent. MNight seems to have found his mojo again.

The very end was a nice surprise with Bruce Wills and his Unbreakable character/Mr Glass reference...seems to set up him going after the Horde. Wow, just reading the IMDB trivia section....this film is tied to Unbreakable...Kevin and his mother appear in that film.

It's just awful.

Stromboli - I liked the film even though melodramatic scenes where the character cries out to no one in particular always leaves me cold. Bergman was really good, I liked how the emotional state of her character and the active volcano was sort of linked, also the island setting and the occasional strings in the soundtrack gave me some pleasant flashbacks of Ruiz's City of Pirates.

I also watched a few of Vittorio De Seta's short documentaries on peasant life in 1950's Sicily. They were a mixed bunch but I probably liked Isole di fuoco the most which was also set on Stromboli, the striking colours were quite a contrast from Rosselini's sparse B&W.

La la land- So am I missing something? I really didn't see what was so great about the movie. The songs, music, dancing (except the opening number) were average and the plot was very predictable. It is a solid 7/10 movie but that's about it.

Saw Get Out at the theatre today. It was the first time I've been to a show since 2013. Did you know they have seats that recline now? And you can pick your seat online? It was pretty cool. 8/10

Agree I thought it was a great film.

Just started watching collateral beauty and it's proper shite, can't see me seeing this one through

Toni Erdmann - A 162 minute German comedy gave my biggest belly laugh of the year, who'd have thought. Genuinely hilarious and human. They're apparently remaking it with Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig. y tho
