Furiosa : A Mad Max Saga

Watched this last night in IMAX and it's exactly the spectacle you'd expect it to be and a direct prequel to Fury Road, literally ending as the previous film starts. Prosthetic nose Helmsworth steals the show hamming it up gloriously as the biker gang leader Dementus. It's a long film but never feels like because it motors along at 100mph. Only criticism and one that I've seen elsewhere is that there's a little bit more cgi in this one. It's always at it's best when it's up close with those glorious vehicle stunts that looked like 3 stuntmen were killed every time.

On another note I wanted to see if George Miller had done anything else outside of the Mad Max universe so had a quick google and his credits also include Babe, Babe: Pig in The City and the Happy Feet movies. Wtf

I thought Civil War was very tame and weak. Theres a line from Kirsten Dunst about when she sent back photo's from foreign warzones she thought it would be a warning - I kind of interpreted the premise of the film to be that, a warning. In that context I just think they pulled their punches way too much - they thought having a tank rolling through DC would shock people or give them some taste of a civil war on american soil. Its just laughably weak compared to the reality of situations like that.
They kind of took every available opportunity to limit the misery. Its set at the end of war, theres a very clear way out of it. Its geographical not idealogical so you dont have to worry about killing your neighbours or family members.
I enjoyed it despite that because i think Alex Garland is a good director and it was well made. But its a weak film.

It’s about journalism. It’s not about an American Civil War. The trailer vs actual film switcheroo was gigantic.

I absolutely loved it. Watched it two nights ago and haven’t got my thoughts together about it enough to write a review. One of the best films I’ve seen in ages though.

That ... doesn't make sense to me. I can see photo journalism in there but even that feels like a stretch. I'll check out your review when you get around to it

The scene with Jesse Plemmons goes exactly against that.

To be fair, I read the Ebert teams review last night and it says lots of things I thought, but might not have expressed exactly the same.

Review

Really enjoyed it.

The stunts in Babe: Pig In The City were basically the same as the death rig high speed fireball crash stunts. I'm really surprised you didn't see the parallels.

He’s had a hit with THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK too. He also made hands-down the best segment of THE TWILIGHT ZONE MOVIE, a remake of “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.”

I much preferred its remake - Witches of Breastwick. Saw it very late night on TV one time. It was inspirational.

Interesting! I agree that that it was a complete switcheroo. Even the fact that a major face in the promos was barely in the movie at all.

For me the biggest surprise (maybe disappointment even) was how different it felt to Garland's other movies. I LOVED Ex Machina, and was quite a fan of 28 Days Later. Even Annihilation was quite the mind bender. This one felt a lot more...straightforward. Almost makes me wonder if i'm not seeing something big

I agree on the primary focus being journalism. I can definitely see why a lot of people would be disappointed, but I thought it was absolutely brilliant personally. I reckon it's a film that will get more recognition over time.

That’s such a weird take. The guys hanging up in the car wash. The Jesse Plemens scene. The carnage on the highways. The ruined cities. Even the opening scene with the suicide bomber was gnarly as feck. How can you watch all that and make the claim in bold? How much nastier did you want it to get?!?

I want it to be vicious as feck to be honest. I probably just read it wrong but if its a warning then yeah, have a hotel rwanda scene where they're driving over dead bodies on the highway.
dont just shoot the president, gaddafi him

The scene with Jesse Plemmons goes exactly against that.
You could certainly imply things from that and other scenes but it was too wishy washy to make any point in that regard. Could just be a rogue soldier.

Yeah, it works better taken in that regard. A lot of good performances scattered around the film too. I'm being harsh i suppose or just misreading the intent.

Have you ever seen this "if..."? It doesn't have Ryan Reynolds in it, but it's excellent nonetheless.

Decent movie, for sure. Now. About that WW

Back To Black Good performances and great that they tried to make a film sympathetic to her. However, it ended up being very bland and you never felt that you got to know her beyond the tabloid public persona we all know. Shame as it could have been great. 6/10

I saw The Fall Guy the other night and it's pretty shite, didn't even bother to finish it. The only thing I liked about it was it's set in Sydney so I knew all the places.

The First Omen

I was not expecting much, too be honest but I was pleasantly surprised with this.
Bit slow at the start but the story builds nicely.
There is done gory and I found it unsettling in places, used the same music has the original.
The last 20-30 mins was very good and tied up very well with the original.
Iam a big fan of the orginals, this is well worth watching

7/10

I do not understand the Amy Winehouse hype. She had one album that was essentially cosplay jazz, and that's it. There's no "there" there. I have listened to that record several times and it's derivative, boring, and I just don't hear this "once in a generation" talent that gets thrown about. This film is/was a chance to explain to the naysayers like me why we should care, but from your review it sounds like they didn't even bother. Now, if they decide to make a Taylor Swift movie, I'm all aboard, choo choo!

:lol:Is it based in the Middle East?

I'm a big fan of the original too and hadn't heard about this. Will have to have a look.

IF - Okay concept, terrible execution. Girl who has stuff going on in her life can suddenly see people's imaginary friends and decides to help abadoned ones find new kids or reconnect with their now adult kids. Felt like they only spent about an hour coming up and designing all the IFs, funnily enough none of them seem to have had much imagination put into them. The rules of how the whole thing works were also flakey so it's hard to get invested in anything, like why can the girl see all IFs when other people seem to only be able to see their own. Ryan Reynolds does half arsed Ryan Reynolds things.

Barbarian

Can't believe this was a box office hit. Started okay but never went anywhere and ended as a laughable mess.

2/10

Yeah this was not bad. Similar uneasy sense of impending dread to it that the original films had. I'd guessed the twist before the half way point though.

American Fiction Intelligent, amusing and charming with some excellent performances. My film of the year so far by some distance. 9/10

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Another Guy Richie trueish WW2 romp and better than his previous effort. Mildly amusing with OK action but also quite forgettable. Decent mindless Friday evening time waster. 6.5/10

Only Yesterday. A 1991 film by Studio Ghibli, but led by Isao Takahata instead of Hayao Miyazaki. It's about a woman from Tokyo in her mid-20s that spends her vacation working on a farm in the countryside far from the big city, and remembers her 10-year old self while appreciating life in the countryside. It's amazing once again. This time it's not a kids film at all, the themes and story are all 'grown-up', and yet again they hit everything they're aiming for. Sad and joyful and beautful and everything - I'd highly recommend it. 5/5

Shakedown

Super cool documentary about strip club designed for black lesbians. In the same vibe as Paris Is Burning but with key difference this is about the struggle of petite bourgeois start up. From the contradiction of people seeing each other as family vs needing to get paid and trying to bypass the racist American state. In the end man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind. The The grindset conquers all!

Plus soundtrack is incredible. A mix of 90’s bangers and modern ambient type beats.

8/10

On that subject...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (4)

Thoroughly enjoyed this although to be fair after the third one they could not have made a worse film in the franchise.

This is a great return to form and just a solid all rounder of an action movie. The moments that are intended to be funny are actually genuinely funny and the final scene is class.

I liked the plot, with the posthumous allegations against the captain and the two Bad Boys fighting to clear his name.

OK so there is some predictability but to be honest what film of this genre doesn't have it?

I thought it was well paced and at 1.55 didn't feel like it dragged at all as it was a lot of fun.

I will be interested to hear other's opinions on this, I'm going with an 8/10

Is this an admission of [you] not finding Zendaya attractive but instead being drawn to one of the two dudes in this triangle?
It'd be the other way around though, you don't follow the ww-thread? Was surprised myself, but that's online forums for you.
