The French Connection is a masterpiece.
Ferrel is barely in it. He’s literally there as a plot device. Nothing he actually does has any impact on the film. He’s not doing any of the doing. His opinion never matters. Despite him being the most powerful person in it. He’s only there to transition between acts and set up actual scenes.
He’s an empty vessel that sends up the old white guy CEO archetype with minimal fuss.
I don’t think it was a kids movie in any way, shape or form. It blows my mind that people are taking their kid to see it and judging it on that metric.
I personally think the film was more brilliant than it was good. The insane Incel response to it is worth the cost of production alone. I’m hoping that it’ll be totemic for both audiences and filmmakers. Similar to the way that once someone pointed out ‘The black guy always dies’ or ‘South Asians are really good at IT’… the industry kind of looked at it all and realised how utterly preposterous casting choices were. It was so easy to do, but until someone did it, nothing changed.
The latest Incel backlash to the idea of a whole phase (THE HORROR!) of Marvel movies being female-hero led, makes you realise that the Barbie patriarchy send up was wholly necessary. That men have got their shit twisted over it, validates it. Babies. All of them.
Also… Will Ferrell is on Comedic Mount Rushmore.
You're making a lot of points that run together, and most of it doesn't apply to me, but I'm guessing you tagged me because we have opposite views of Will Ferrell? He was doing an SNL skit portrayal of a character in Barbie, which stood out as weak. Kate McKinnon was also weak. All opinions are a matter of taste, and I just don't like Ferrell's hammy shit he does.
I don't know about the "insane incel response", and don't know what you mean by talking about casting stereotypes, or in this film being "totemic". I don't care at all about what incels think about anything. I also don't care about Marvel movies, doesn't matter who is leading them, male, female.
Disagree with you also when you say it's not a kids' movie. I'd say it's for audiences ages 8 and up, definitely for teens, while also appealing to parents. There were a bunch of little kids in the screening I saw. The sweet spot is probably right when a kid loses interest in Barbies, which is probably around 7 or 8? I don't know, my daughter never cared about Barbies. I think they straddled the fence a little bit, though, intentionally adding some things to avoid the G rating. The G rating would have been the kiss of death. It was rated PG here but I couldn't really point to anything that merited PG other than Barbie saying "vagina" and "penis" once.

For me, It’s firmly an adult movie though, albeit one that that was accessible to kids 12+. [Notably, girls aged 12+, probably boys 15+]

You might be right regarding the ages. I think 12+ is pretty much a kids' movie, but it's not mindless like a Barney movie. The kids in my screening wouldn't shut the feck up, though, so I'd be in favor of them banning kids from seeing it.

SNL is somewhere where potentially great comics get to do their 10 thousand hours…that’s its cultural value more than anything… its weirdly fascinating in that regard, but it’s also never not been shit in a relative sense. Even the eras people think they like were probably just as difficulty to sit through an entire episode of.
Though I agree that I’ve never really gotten Ferrel. He’s even the worst part of Anchorman, but it’s mostly fine cos that character doesn’t get to shout as much as he’d patently like to.

I watched Shin Kamen Rider on Prime and it reminded me you can make a superhero movie whilst a) having some kind of vision for the project, and b) not taking everything completely seriously.
Also shit CGI is much more fun to watch than photorealistic CGI.

This auto trailered while I was on the Netflix homescreen. Looked interesting and I really like Neil Maskell so I stuck it on, only 97 mins or summat so no huge commitment.
Well I really enjoyed it. Maskell is amazing in it, brutal and deadpan but with loads of depth simmering behind his eyes, wish he'd be in more. Good supporting cast too. Well worth a watch IMO. A revenge thriller that doesn't really expand the genre too much but works very well nonetheless and some genuinely exciting scenes.

Meh, it always has been I think. Especially on here, over the years every time his name comes up, it's quite split.
I mean the fact he has an almost 30 year career behind him, has his fingers in several things (he's produced a lot of shit on top of his acting career), and seems to have his stock generally speaking quite high, I guess some people do find him amusing?
Humour/comedy is very difficult to account for, it's so incredibly subjective, what I might find funny will seem stupid to you, and vice-versa. It's fine, there's enough comedy genres out there to keep everyone happy, and I wouldn't try to shove the brand of humour I enjoy down anyone's throat. If someone doesn't find something I love to be amusing, there's no real way of me convincing them of why it's funny (whereas when I see that @Rado_N doesn't like Miami Vice, it's just that he hasn't yet seen its transcendental poetry, but he'll soon enter the Church of Mann where @Sweet Square will be waiting for him).

Anyway, I have no qualms with Ferrell. He does his thing and while it's not my kind of humour he seems like a nice guy.
No doubt he is a good guy, I want to say he is quite low key philanthropic. And he is quite diverse in the industry, his exec producing turn with Succession encapsulates that. Just don't find his style of comedy engaging at all.

Will Ferrell is fine. He has some genuinely funny movies, and some absolute shite...like literally every other actor. Look at Adam Sandler for example, this guy will put out 10 movies of absolute shite and then do a Punchdrunk Love or Uncut Gems or...actually, it's only those 2 in his 30+ year career. The guy is fecking shit and keeps cnuts like Rob Schneider relevant.

So, got around to watching Barbie. I loved the first hour and a half, it was funny, creative and inspired. I was worried I'd feel like I'd already seen the movie after all the trailers but I didn't feel that way.
I didn't feel like it totally stuck the landing. It was a surprisingly subdued ending, a little talky and didactic and dragging a bit, and I think it struggled to see out a couple of character arcs.
Still a very entertaining watch. 8/10.

Just back from the cinema, thought it was excellent.
Yeah I really enjoyed it. What stops it from being a truly great horror is the meandering from the midpoint to the third act. Apart from that, fantastic.
Never seen Punch Drunk Love. Just watched because of this post and it’s fantastic. What a film. So tense at times. Similar feels to uncut gems.
Glad you liked it! And yes, he's great in it. If you like the feel of the movie, you should check out some other work by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Watched this last night and I agree with your review and rating.
The only thing I would say is
It would have worked just as well, if not better without the twist at the end because I think that took it away from reality and did spoil it a little.
Having said that I guess revenge thrillers are ten a penny and the Director (Paul Williams) had to do something to try and set it apart.

By all accounts made very cheaply but Neil Maskell leads it well. Support isn't fantastic and he almost carries the film but you can just about believe they are tough men.
Recommend to check it out if you have Netflix.
I watched They cloned Tyrone last night, and despite really liking quite a few things about it (the cast is great, the cinematography is a nice throwback to the 70s grittiness, the soundtrack is cool), it didn't quite do it for me. It's still worth a watch, it's a fun film, but I just found myself being a bit bored during the second half of it.
Re the cast, I thought David Haymann was really good and Tamzin Outhwaite also. Ther were a couple of the henchmen that were weak I guess.
I'm almost 50/50 split over the ending. In one sense it jarred the heck out of me but once I'd let the movie settle a bit I actually thought it was a good little bit of rock and roll film making.
Glad you enjoyed it though dude.

It does exactly what it says on the tin and what you see in the trailer.
The plot is what you'd expect from a film of its type, it's not over complicated.
Some of it is ridiculous but I think that's the whole point!
The only negative I would say is the villains are maybe lazily put together.
But Statham and the lead cast are great, it's just 100 minutes of madness which flew by (other than the final showdown, they could have shaved 10 minutes off that).
A film I wasn't expecting to enjoy but did.

The Pope's Exorcist
To see Russell Crowe go from playing a Gladiator at the Colosseum to him riding a Vespa dressed as a priest is depressing
A very generic exorcism/possession movie and not memorable at all apart from Russell Crowe having fun as the lead in a horror film 2/10
Infinity Pool
James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors. A decent concept that kind of goes nowhere in the end, which is a shame as I was really looking forward to this. Typical themes from Cronenberg, the same stuff covered by his more talented father. There was enough in it to enjoy it but feels more like a missed opportunity than anything considering the concept 5.5/10

The story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, two twins that refused to talk to anyone but each other. I love the original story behind this but this adaptation was only average at best. It meanders a lot and doesn't give any insight beyond what you can easily find on a Wikipedia search. The two leads were good though. The film begins way too slow but gets better during the second half 4.5/10
