Black Widow

Suprisingly fun and entertaining. The battle scene was quite entertaining considering natasha was actually a mortal without proper superpower

Pugh was a breath of fresh air and a good example of how to make a good sidekick. Welch still oozes sexiness, if she's only 20 yours younger she could make a case for being the black widow.

I think Ray winstone is ok. Enjoyable as the bad guys with limited screen time.

I just think a lot of what is truly great about this film is lost on the average movie goer. If you can't keep interested without loads of fight scenes and blood and guts then that's a shame. The dialogue in this film is amazing. The cinematography is incredible. It really does feel like he got the tone right for the era it was set.

People who expected Kill Bill / Pulp Fiction type of film will definitely be disappointed. Not every film is like that. Hateful 8 is a slow burner too and is also brilliant.

“I doubt that Avenger God from sky need Ibuprofen after fight” was the most cutting and funny lines in the MCU. Pugh was fabulous. Tough, vulnerable, believable, rash at times but considered in others.

Obviously it’s a Comic Book movie and the final set piece was insane, but the movie was brilliant.
 
Fear street part 1. Got the look of the 90s well enough, but the over use of music to set the time line let it down. As did the cast with the exception of the little kid that knows whats really going down he was good, and his t shirt were awsome. With the exception of him I felt like I was watching Gen Z kids find a time machine and have fun playing in the 90s.

Fear Street part 2. Some of the same issues as the first one. An over reliance on music to set the time frame but done in a way its like theres someone on a jukebox who cant make up their mind what to play. Ill be honest, I got more of an 80s vibe from this one than the 70s it was going for. It was alright, but that end scene with
the CPR was just dumb as feck.

Black Widow.
Not bad, some good stuff going on. ScarJo was solid as always in the role and Pugh was pretty good as the sister although the jokes were a little too much some times. Although some of them were brilliant. Especially take the piss out of the poses. Funny as hell when she tired it herself, and then was like "nope, thats just stupid". Very deadpoolish. Was disappointed not to see more of Red Guardian doing his thing. He was a joke character and never really got out of that. The pheromone thing was dumb as feck. You dont have to break your nose, just move away from him. Job done. All in all it was kinda like they were trying to remake winter solider. A solid enough enter to the MCU. Nothing special, nothing horrible.
 
The Grand Seduction. An English remake of the original French-Canadian film,that I have yet to see. But my wife said they made it quite differently which is good. Anyway, a nice and calm if somewhat sentimental comedy. Some good acting, and I loved how it's all really set in Newfoundland; even the music never breaks character. (Including that they cheer on the Habs!)
 
I'm going to watch Drive (2011) tonight. Ryan Gosling. Think it was recommended on here to watch.

I've also got The Nice Guys and LA Confidential recorded.

It's great! But it's a slow, dark, quiet, brooding film. Which is fine of course, but no good if you'd be looking for something light, relaxing, or fun to watch. :)

Yeah, Drive is 2011.

I love all of Refn's films myself. One of my favorites. Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon are also amazing, although not the type of films for everyone.

Drive is quite fun and relaxing to watch! But then, I also like Bela Tarr films.

Ha, I didn't even check the year. I also meant the one with Ryan Gosling. (It's 2011, you're right.)

Maybe I'm focusing on the wrong parts in my memory, but that's how I look back upon it. For what it's worth, I know a group of friends went to watch it in cinema and most were so disappointed about what the film actually was like. I think they expected an action flick. :)

I do recommend it btw! It's really good. I was just thinking of comments you made previously when asking about films to watch, so I thought I'd point this out.

I think they are too artistic. Very slow but brilliant if you can persevere.

The same with his tv show too old to die young. A masterpiece if you can stick it out. Most though will find it too slow, but that is what makes it good.
 
I personally think Refns works are too slow. But he will argue that what makes them stand out.

Too Old to Die Young is one of my all-time favorites. Absolute masterpiece but yes a few friends have found it too slow (but they have bad taste).

They definitely do. But I would still say that, if you go watch Drive in cinema wanting to see an action blockbuster, then you'll leave disappointed. :)

That's a nice selection. I'm still sour The Nice Guys disappeared from my Netflix before I got to watch it, cause it looks really good to me. At least that won't happen to Uncut Gems (since it's a Netflix film). And I'd love to watch L.A. Confidential again (and read the book); great film!

I managed to find The Nice Guys by doing a search on my Sky Box. Not sure if you have it. Basically you type it in and then it will come back with when and what channel something is on.

Ended up being on something like Film 4 in the early hours of a weekday morning so just set it to record and forgot about it!

Nah, I don't have cable or other tv, just Netflix. It'd anyway be different in Canada i imagine.

I suppose I could get the film on Youtube or something if I just paid for it; but I have such a long watch list on Netflix that I'm not in a hurry to add to it. Still a pity though - I would've certainly seen it by now if I hadn't missed the 'watch before' comment on Netflix. (Another thing Netflix does really poorly: those things are far too easy to miss. And they should really improve their search and sort functions. Why can't I look for films by language availability (I need French or Dutch dubbing for my daughters), or sort or search by duration?! OK, rant over.)

Apparently it's available on Amazon for £0.99p at the moment.

I have Netflix but I really dislike the set up in the way that it starts playing the trailers of each show/film whilst you're scrolling through. So irritating! Can you change it?

The Player (1992)

First time seeing this, as I begin my journey into select cuts from Altman's back catalogue. I'd only previously seen Gosford Park and Popeye (WTF?), and it really feels like I've been missing out, as there was so much to love about this movie. It must surely hold some kind of record for cameos?

Anyway, "Traffic was a bitch." :lol:

Short Cuts, MASH and Nashville are next up. Any other suggestions welcome.
 
Ode to Joy. From Wikipedia: "Charlie (Martin Freeman) is a Brooklyn-based librarian in his forties suffering from cataplexy, causing him to faint whenever he experiences strong emotions, especially joy. Upon meeting the charming and free-spirited Francesca (Morena Baccarin), Charlie falls in love but sets her up with his brother Cooper (Jake Lacy) instead because of his condition." A quirky little comedy that's really a lot of fun. An easy and entertaining watch - I'd recommend it.
 
Long Shot. A US Secretary of State who wants to become president (Charlize Theron) employs her former neighbour (Seth Rogen), an activistic and principled journalist, as her speechwriter. The clash of styles and approaches leads to various situations that lead them to reassess their thinking - and to romance.

That sounds really cheesy, but it's actually pretty OK. There is a lot of emphasis on the double standards for women in politics (nothing groundbreaking or subtle, but it's well done), and a lot of the jokes work well. Not all of them do and it turns into a bit of a fairytale at the end - but overall it's a pretty decent comedy.

(Yes, I've been watching mainly hyper-accessible, easy comedies lately.)

A talented American graduate of Oxford creates a cannabis empire using the estates of British aristocrats. However, when he tries to sell his empire to a fellow American billionaire, a chain of events unfolds, involving blackmail, deception, mayhem and murder between street thugs, Russian oligarchs, Triad gangsters and gutter journalists.

Never heard of this film until a relative mentioned it. Decided to give it a whirl as I loved the early Guy Ritchie films and found it pretty compelling from beginning to end with great performances from an ensemble cast including Hugh Grant, Matthew McConaughey and Colin Farrell (who I barely recognised).

Fcuking hell. No idea. Genuinely enjoyed some parts of it. But an often gut wrenching mess of a movie. The single worst handled angle of pedophilia ever put on film. Wish I hadn’t watched it.

The Long Goodbye and 3 Women are both great.

One is kind of relaxing and breezy, the other is very tense and a bit out there. Both of course possess Altman's distinctive style.
 
6 Days
Based on the Iranian Embassy siege of 1980, this action-thriller dramatizes a six-day standoff between armed Iranian Arabs and SAS soldiers ready for a counterattack. Jamie Bell was really good as the lead SAS soldier but this felt more like a re-enactment than a thriller. It's didn't have the film pizzazz and needed some upweighting in the script. In current form, you don't feel much for the characters and there's not enough tension, action or emotion 3/10

  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Tap Manage Profiles.
  4. Select your user profile.
  5. Uncheck the button that says "Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices."
  6. Hit save.
