The Redcafe Champions League Draft

I understand why people think I should have gone for Angloma but to be honest I have so little knowledge of him and also a CL-winner.

I'm back now, totally happy with the players I ended up getting, when I was looking at the players available and the ones probably getting picked before my team this is basicly the team I hoped to go get, with minor alterations (Would've prefered Maldini to Stam if I could, but he was always going before).

VDS
Rafael Stam Campbell Capdevila
Beckham Keane Effenberg Overmars
Del Piero
Nistelrooy
I wanted to stay with 4-4-2 as far as it can take me, so given CL qoutas and draft order I think I did fine, managed to heavily reinforce my central defence as well as getting one of the finest front men to hit in Beckham crosses ever.

Good job man. That's a very well balanced 4-4-2, and Van Nistelrooy is a huge vote winner for me, particularly with Beckham in the team.

He seems to prefer him to Ramos on the bench too.

I would too. Pepe for Carvalho and Ramos for Gallas and our back 4 would be the all star cnut team. Some really dislike Ramos, some don't rate him as a player and some think both. Rafael however has just had a very good season and is very liked on this forum.

Myself, I don't think Rafael stands any more out than Capdevila. He's famous for being the only competent left back at the beginning of Spain's reign.

Yeah, kps was unlucky Toldo didn't last.

Cutch, I can't see who would have picked Raúl TBH.

It's really among the non-CL ones you would look for surprises as they had brownie points for that. Still don't understand how EDogen didn't get Angloma. kps should also have gone for him to replace Salgado instead of Lloris.

Theon not picking Kaká is shocking as well. I can see the attractiveness in Shevchenko, but with Ronaldo to be picked next... I would have gone for Kaká and Toldo, less fancy than what he got but a better choice going forward.

For example instead of Shevchenko. Gio could also have done with him. He's got plenty of non-winners as it is and up top is Owen. Raúl is comfortably the better choice.

You are right, Marseille... Fair enough regardless, it's never a good idea to go with a player you know little about unless he is universally accepted as brilliant!

For Tito, Blanc never won it.

Of course... he was NOT at Marseille when they won it. I had a right mare there

Nor did Fabregas.

Yeah, he moved after they beat us, I just put CL win on any Barca player by default. My bad. That makes Gio's CL winners Rio-Vidic, Zanetti and Ronnie. That's basically an inverse CL quota, and a bloody good use of it too!

Theon is basically Milan, I would have taken Kaká but can see how he couldn't resist Shevchenko.

Gio plays one upfront and will have a choice of Henry or Romario as his next reinforcement. You would make all three picks he made ahead of taking Raúl for the one game. Assuming he goes through, of course.

I needed a non winner. Toldo or Angloma wouldn't have worked.

Rafael just stands like a sore thumb though. If you did this draft on any other football forum, I seriously doubt that anyone would consider picking Rafael.

I think the only reason why he goes under the radar is due to him being young really, he isn't worse than someone like Srna, Heinze, Grosso, Sagna etc imo. On the plus side his attacking play is great and imo better than Ramos which is why I've gone with him and thrown Ramos to the bench. That being said I might consider Ramos for the game since he'll be against Giggs and Ramos is obviously more defensive, so him covering might help me nullify that somewhat.

Would've been funny if you hadn't took him, and kps decided to go for Lloris instead thinking Toldo was a winner!

My bad. Didn't realise he didn't get any game time during that season.

Anyone gout Kluivert he and Rivaldo linked up so well together during the Barca day's comparable to that Cole-Yorke link up.

Yeah that was a brilliant partnership when both players were at their peak. I'd have liked to have renewed it here.

Yeah, I knew you were probably going to persist with Makaay, but thought Kluivert was a good option for you.

Definitely I was looking so some Barca tv videos and the amount of times they linked up for goals and their understanding was almost telepathic then they had Figo with them there also. I think Rivaldo is somewhat underrated people don't mention him as much as they should in lists of great players. I think he was Brazil's best player in 2002.

Yeah, so to be honest I had a very hard time with my third pick.. I just went for Pires in the end.

kps wise pick to make the best DM pair of Davids - Redondo () ; and reducing the dependence on Riquelme as the only creative outlet. Replacing Heinze with Ashley Cole is an excellent move; a welcome addition to the best CB pair in the draft, in Kohler-Costacurta. I'd pick Lehmann over Lloris as non-CL gk, but it's not a major issue.

I rate Angloma as good as Lizarazu or Lahm, but understandably that he's a CL winner and not that well-known, make him less attractive pick.

Well I watched these two videos recently - probably the same ones - and it reinforced what an understanding they had together. Some good partnerships in that era, Yorke and Cole obviously, Raul and Morientes, Shevchenko and Rebrov and so on.

Yeah same ones I watched Kluiverts also and Ronaldo sets him up for goals many times also. I wonder how the voters would react to such a partnership over say Rivaldo and an Henry which I assume would work because they are both so good but this is tried and tested.

Tried and tested will be huge in this draft. All the sides look very strong and the quarters and semis will flush out any teams with weak links. the final will most likely be settled on what is know to work.

He's probably busy, as am I until Monday I think, that's probably the earliest I can get my write up done. When's everyone planning to do thiers?

I'm away on holiday from Sunday for 10 days, so would be keen to do my quarter-final either side of that.

I've been extremely busy with work this week so I haven't been able log on, but there was always going to be a gap anyway to let people do their profiles.

EDogen couldn't do his game before Thursday and Ralaks was at a festival, so there was no harm in waiting.

Gio v Akash - Fri
TITO v Theon - Sat
EDogen v Ralaks - Sun
Fergus v kps - Mon

That was the order of the draw, but some of you might need to swap around days so if you do PM me and we'll try and swap them around. For now though that can be the preliminary schedule.

That's fine Theon, I was conscious something like Gio's situation could come up and in that case we had to make sure the two sides were committed to a writeup deadline. It would be a complete arse to stop the entire thing a further ten days from Sunday waiting for Gio to come back from holidays.

If he plays Friday and wins there are plenty of games in between.

Antohan would you be in a position to take in the tactics and post the match thread in Theon's absence?

Yes, that was the idea if Theon was too tied up or a no show.

I was getting worried there, thought he might have got tetanus from his primitive vasectomy.

I'm fine with whatever day really, I've no serious plans for the next few weeks, finally done with festivals for this summer. So if need be and if EDogen is alright with it them our game can be moved/swapped if needed..

Yeah would be fine for me also. Will start my write up tonight.

Alessandro Nesta

World Cup, Champions League and Serie A winner and also the best centre half of his generation with, one of the best readers of the game that has ever been seen. The timing of his tackling in his prime was a joy to watch. In my opinion the best central defender in this draft.

Cirro Ferrara

Started his career in Napoli and was an important part of a great team playing as a right back before switching to centre back and becoming even greater in that position. Later a leader for the dominant Juventus team in the mid 90s, and the ever-strong Italian national team. Like many other defenders from Italy he is one of the all-time greats. Also good as attacking midfielder, winger or right back. Big game player and Barcelona legend. 109 goals in 300 appearances for Barca.

Diego Simeone

Defensive midfielder and hard man Diego Simeone, a great ball winner who played for Argentina 106 times. Great mentality and work rate and he will run until the game is won for 90+ minutes. Also capable of scoring goals from a deeper position.

He has this ability to turn a game in the blink of an eye. 68 goals in 121 games for Bayern. Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Champions League winner.

Robin van Persie

The best striker of the last three years in the game in my opinion. A goal scoring machine with a left foot out of this world. Good movement with the ball and finding the right spaces as well. Technique, vision and a great understanding of the game. Brilliant touch and a joy to watch.

Subs:

Robert Pires
Deco
Rustu Recber
Bacary Sagna

Hugo Lloris – Three time keeper of the year in France and he has established himself in England as well. A brilliant shot stopper and sweeper.

Michel Salgado: 2 time CL winner and a bit of a nutter. He was tough, aggressive and not to be messed with. Had a great engine on him; will run up and down the right flank all day.

Jurgen Kohler: One of the greatest man markers of all time. Has won league titles with Bayern, Juventus and Dortmund. Also has a CL and World Cup medal to his name. He was strong as an ox and unbeatable in the air. Think Vidic on steroids.

Allesandro Costacurta: Part of the legendary Milan back four of the 90s. Billy has more than 450 caps for Milan and has won everything there is to win with them, including 7 league titles and 5 CLs.

Ashley Cole: Perhaps the best left back of his generation. Equally capable going forward and defending.

Edgar Davids: A beast of a midfielder. Was named in the Euro 2000 and WC 98 all star teams. Will bring power, energy and drive to the midfield.

Fernando Redondo: Perhaps the greatest defensive midfielder in the draft. Capable of contributing both off and on the ball. Hugely influential for Real Madrid and helped them win everything there was to win.

Juan Roman Riquelme: Supremely gifted playmaker, capable of effortlessly drifting around the pitch and running the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Not much needs to be said. Goal scoring machine, capable of doing it all.

Kily Gonzalez: Part of the great Valencia side of the early 2000s. Lightening quick and a great crosser of the ball.

Christian Vieri: Built like an ox. At his peak, Bobo had pace and power and was almost unplayable. He holds the record for most headed goals scored in Serie A history.

(SUB) Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Super Sub. Can be the difference between a draw and a win.
