The Overlap | Denis Irwin: Rooming With Roy, Sir Alex & Chess With Cantona! | Stick to Football EP 67

Roy fuming over his FA Cup haul of 5 goals being "wrong" (it's not) - was hysterical

I vaguely remember a clip of the dressing room celebrations at the Camp Nou in 1999, with Irwin not wanting champagne and asking for beer !

I agree that he comes across as a complete class act - the fact that team-mates like Keane are ‘reverential about him’ and so many opposition players and coaches were in awe of his ability and consistency, spoke volumes.

Good to see Scholes and Carragher confront Ornstein about the Marcus Rashford PR machine today.

Scholes' comment when Ornstein said, "he scored 30 goals" made me chuckle. "What in 3 years?", not sure if he meant it as a joke or not, but still funny.

I'm very ill today so have laid in bed all day and watched a few of these shows - brilliant fair play

Neville calling Michael Oliver not only the best referee in the league but one of the best in the world

Neville is just a Sky shill. He's really trying his best to be insufferable.

He peddles the narrative they want him to. If they ask him to jump, he jumps. Nobody goes as far as him, though.

Did his best to emphasize how Oliver is the best ref in the PL as often as he could vomit it out.

Watching the fan show, it's clear Carragher and Scholes weren't allowed to criticize refs, so they keep quiet and move on.

Neville was equally pathetic with the Rashford situation. Whines on about this squad of players being problematic whenever he gets to, but when Rashford gets called out, suddenly we're spinning narratives that "he's not that type of person".

If it weren't for Keane and Wright, and sometimes(very rarely) Carragher, this show would be awful to watch.

Was watching this and I thought it was an
absolutely mental take from him.

Ian Wright's point about how the fans view it was fair.

It's not a mental take - Oliver is literally put up by the PGMOL as one of our best refs, and put forward for European/International Competitions etc.

Everyone and their nan might think he's crap - but the official line in footbal circles is that he's one of the best refs around.

Infuriating take that from Neville! Needs to give his head a wobble. Michael Oliver is clown. He obviously doesn’t deserve death threats but he doesn’t — no one does, but he’s a clown nonetheless.

I just wish these journalists leave Amorim alone and start asking these questions to Marcus.

Don't think what he said was incorrect or 'crazy'. He's rated as one of the best referees - a referee who made a bad mistake at the weekend. If Haaland missed 5 open goals on the weekend, he wouldn't suddenly not be one of the best strikers in the world.

I think the way 'fans' try to criticise Neville for anything and everything so tiring.

I think I might not watch enough football these days to actually have an opinion on who’s the best ref in the league, he’s surely one of the best in the league though, he’s refereed in the World Cup, euros and an fa cup final. I think England only get to send 6 refs to an international tournament and he got one of the spots, so surely the governing bodies see him as one of the best too.

Oliver has been a terrible referee for over a decade though. His conflicts of interest are also completely disregarded by football circles.

Doesn't make the PGMOL or the official line right.

Good to see him dropped this weekend.

Dreadful referee.

When these things happen, you get pundits and journalists going overboard with referees. No one deserves death threats but these guys speak like going against the referee is a taboo.

“Referees need protection” who doesn’t need protection? Don’t the players need protection, don’t the coaches need protection? The whole thing is why referees aren’t accountable.

Here it is then. The big one.

I'm so glad his personality off the pitch matches what he was like on the pitch. Amongst my three favourite United players when I started following, with Scholes and Giggs.

Lovely player and sounds like a lovely guy as well.

AW had it right when he said the English refereeing standard is the worst in the top leagues. Cut them to size back when morons like Clattenburg, Webb and Dean were calling the shots, and promoting similarly pathetic boys club members like Oliver as the next big thing.
