Gaming The Outer Worlds | 25th October release date

So far I’m loving this. Apart from the quite ordinary graphics, it’s really fun to play. It’s a combination of Fallout, Mass Effect and Deus Ex and I loved 2 out of 3 of those games.

Played all day, not even exaggerating (1. Novermber is a holiday here in bavaria). I'm thoroughly hooked. No idea how many hours I sunk into the game so far, but certainly 20+, and I'm not even halfway through Monarch (which is surprisingly huge compared to the locations before).

Am I the only one who really doesn’t like the colour palette?

I’m really enjoying the game but I hate the fact enemies look like cartoony inflatables. I get that they’re desperately trying to distinguish it aesthetically from fallout but I can’t help but feel I’m playing this game on LSD.

 I was wondering what it reminded me of and it's definitely having a few mushrooms.

I think I already know the Reed Thobson story, and I want to kill him

I've been given the mission by Thobson to find the deserters/take their power thingy. I also noticed they were using sprats for the saltuna, which I'm assuming is what's making everyone ill and why people actually left. I'm gonna pot him once I've played this out a bit. Is that reasonable or will the entire town try to gun me down?

Fallout is the one I can’t stand. I’ve only played Fallout 3 and 4 but couldn’t get into either one, both really tedious to play.

Adored Mass Effect and Deus Ex though.

So you're yet to experience Fallout.

I’ve heard this a few times. I can’t imagine I ever will as Bethesda’s take on Fallout right now and probably for the foreseeable future is most likely going to resemble the model of 3 and 4 which I just can’t stand.

You can actually still play the original ones, they're great. And, of course, New Vegas. Like Fallout 3, but better in virtually every metric.

Maybe one day I will get around to it. Don’t like the look of 76 either

Finished it the other day. Enjoyable game. Nothing groundbreaking (wheyyy) but still a solid RPG. Happy with my ending.

Went to play a new game to see what happens if I kill everyone and turn in Phineas but then I needed 8000 bits to carry on that storyline and I gave up.

Loving this game so far. Just got off the first planet.

I just wish it was more “cinematic”. I think if instead of a character standing mid screen talking to me, I could see some cutscenes I’d be a lot happier.

Yeah it's funny how there's a really detailed character face customization tool and you then never see your character in the game apart from menus.

Finished the game yesterday. Very enjoyable, ticked all the expected boxes, basically. The AA budget is noticable in some places, especially the little variation of armor and guns. The modding system is also only functional, nothing exciting or very fun. While the companions are not all the most interesting or memorable, i find that the integration of companions into the world is where the game actually shines the most. There's tons of banter between companions in the field. Actually strike banter, it's real dialogue with a progressing character arc. Also on your ship there's multiple scenes of companion interactions. My only gripe here is that these scenes do repeat, which somewhat breaks the lifelike impression they would create were they unique. Also in conversations with all sorts of NPCs your companions have loads of input and comments, sometimes sparking a little extra dialogue. All this is very neat and worthy of an AAA production (not that there are many AAAs out there actually doing this).
Shooting and fighting feels good enough, while the game is definitely on the easy side of things. Unless you hate shooter games, don't bother with difficulty below hard (supernova with companion permadeath is probably a real chore though).
I also liked the quests and the storyline. Nothing revolutionary, but good quality content. I liked how things picked up for the finale and feel i got a fitting and rewarding end.

It's definitely not a Bethesda-Fallout sandbox replacement though, both in budget and in focus. If you missed roleplaying mechanics most in F4 and (shudder) 76, then you can give it a try.

Yeah the companions was one of the best things. Before playing I fully expected to not want any unless there was a dog but my god if somebody touched a hair on Parvati's head I would destroy all.

The best thing about the companions are their Commando-esque dialogue when you get them to perform their special, especially Vicar Max and SAM.

Ah yeah... I never used a single one of those special companion abilities in 35 hours

She's a bit too nice at times though. Just as I'm about to melt MacRedd into plasma dust she starts being all sweet with him. Leave the room or something Parvati, this man is about to croak it.

How do you do that?

you unlock their specials once you hit 20 on the leadership abilities and can use them with C or V (on PC). They're well worth getting as they're insanely overpowered.

Ahh ok ta, I was avoiding upgrading leadership but I'll get it up to 20.

This week, I observed a UPS and a DHL delivery guy meet in the street while and have a conversation, with their uniforms and all, and somehow I felt that scene had a striking Outer Worlds quality to it.

So far I'm up to Fallbrook. I'm kind of enjoying it but also wondering if anything interesting is actually going to happen? Perhaps I'm slowing myself down too much trying to do every side mission, but it's feeling very samey so far. Even the interesting characters so far aren't that interesting.
For example Clive the creepy boarst guy. The interesting part - talking to him and finding out what he's like, was over as quick as it begun.

In these games nowadays I think you need more adventure and reason to explore and stumble across, as well as the stories pulling you in, plus busy towns full of life that make you feel like you've arrived somewhere. So far the towns feel like a carbon copy without much life, even Fallbrook which looks cool but isn't that interesting really. The house you can get here for example, it could've been quite cool having a gaff in a lawless town, but I doubt there's much reason for me to come back or use the house. Between towns, the most interesting thing I've found I was led right to by a side mission (Mather family).

Like a lot of games, I'm left thinking that if it was expanded and really fleshed out it could be incredible, but instead it's just an alright way to kill some time. I know it's easier said than done but there we go.

@VeevaVee i understand your gripes, but i think most of them are down to the game's scope/budget. It was made pretty clear from the start that we wouldn't get an exploration-driven sandbox here.

Yeah understandable, just disappointing. Maybe I'll start picking and choosing my side missions more, so it feels less like I'm just churning through the game.

Finished it yesterday and can't complain since it took about 34 hours and cost me £1 on Game Pass. However, when I look back on the experience, I spent a large part of those 34 hours collecting stuff that I didn't use. You end up with tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition, hundreds of consumables like food and temporary stat-buffers, umpteen copies of the same mods, weapons and armour. You can complete the game by using one good gun that you tinker until it becomes OP. Most of the side missions are "go there, kill/collect that, come back". The dialogue is good, and certainly better than the last couple of Fallout titles, but I didn't really feel any connection with the characters and decided whether I'd be good or bad on a whim. And I didn't really suffer any consequences for my actions. Except when I collected all the outfits for the fashion store owner in Byzantium and she attacked me when I went back to her because I had killed some people in the city earlier. I spent hours collecting the outfits and it was ultimately a waste of time. I just shrugged and wished I had killed everyone everywhere from the start .

It was a good game but a sequel needs to improve in a fair few areas imo.

Stopped playing this because I was busy and it's not pulling me back in at all

I enjoyed it, very much like a fallout game. However once I completed it, I had no interest in replaying it and sold it as a used game. Certainly a nice game worth playing, but nothing spectacular about it. 8.5/10 for me.

I've not played Fallout much but one of my memories of Fallout 3 was stumbling across cool and interesting things. That doesn't really happen in this. It just all feels a bit wooden.

I agree, it was very samey.

Same. I enjoyed playing it but nothing about it stood out enough for me to want to pick it back up to continue at this point. I think it's just a generic, risk-free game that'll barely be remembered when talking about/recommending games in this genre.

£20 on PSN at the minute - is it a good game? Worth it?
I really enjoyed it. Definitely worth it at that price. Very similar to a fallout game, mixed with mass effect. That woikd be the way to describe it. If you liked the fallout games then it's for you. It's a bit better the most recent fallout for sure.

The gunplay is pretty horrendous, worse than fallout even. That made me put it down fairly sharply.

I got bored of it. Had so much potential but ultimately dull and fairly lifeless. Needed fleshing out more.
