Can anyone explain this whole ‘industry plant’ thing?
It's not meant to mean a band "put together" as such, but one heavily funded and pushed but still hiding behind the "indie" band label. There aren't many actual Indie publishers left, most are offshoots of the majors anyway and it's sometimes deliberately hidden who "indie" bands are signed to really as to make it a good story. Oasis were actually signed to Sony all along via Creation, so technically speaking they could be called "plants" back in the day too.
Which is why it's such a nonsense tag and the people using it are snobs moaning about bands being pushed whilst others aren't. As for TLDP even they themselves say they can see why it's said, but they openly say who they are signed to and the story of them being spotted and how Covid coming along made it a right time/place deal makes sense.
But as I said before, so what anyway? If they are "plants" then the crap music industry should plant more of this! They are genuinely great, and yeah I know the South London music scene is a decent one and I've seen many bands that people will always argue are better than others, but these just have that magic something about them that stands them above. It's easy to see why they are so popular.
It will be interesting to see what happens next though. Their newer songs that aren't on the album are even more guitar led live and where the singer had most of the songs already written for this one, they are all involved more and more in song writing. So hopefully that keeps it fresh for a while longer.
