The horror film thread

For me, this is still the single most chilling and graphic scene in horror cinema history. Right before that he took a sledgehammer to some guy's head. A complete shock murder.

But it isn't graphic. That's the brilliance of the film...you think you see more gore than you actually have. I think the only time you see a saw hit flesh is when he does his own leg. In fact, I'd say the scene at the end where he's whirling around with the saw is more chilling. That whole film is a mind-feck.

I'd choose the Psycho shower scene as the best ever.

Watched The Grudge 2 last night, i had no idea what was going on and there wasn't enough Sarah Michelle Gellar for my liking. It just seemed like the girl from the ring had moved house. Although the bit where the girl comes out of the photo in the red room was quite good.

Overall, it was shit.

But i do like my horror films, love a good zombie film. The shining is one of my favourite films and oddly i still jump when the screen flashes to black and says Tuesday. I've not seen that many modern horror films, Last house on the left wasn't really scary just slightly disturbing (no likes watching someone get raped even if it is acting).

The original version of The Grudge is worse. I am sure I saw the same character get killed three times. No idea what the feck was going on.

Wrong Turn 2 is perfect for what it is. B movie nonsense. Pre ordered a video nasty compendium off Amazon, looks boss.

Salem's Lot is still a cracking effort...the original that is, not the crappy remake. I shit my pants after seeing it on a school night back in the early 80's.

Food of the Gods must be based on the H G Wells story about giant insects and people? Can't imagine they made a good film of it?

It was well before CGI and the like so watching today it's clearly a terrible flick. But as a kid it was fantastic. Reminded me of Mysterious Island.

Poor choice of adjective I suppose. It's the shock of it, as you say the mind-feck. Getting stuck on a meat hook and watching your significant other (or anyone for that matter) getting cut up by some maniac while you are helpless and know your fate is sealed. fecked up.

The scene where Leatherface goes nuts inside the house then sits by a window shows just how great the story writing was. You can sense his insanity yet his never knowing human reality through his upbringing. How he can't handle an outsider and knows nothing other than to kill.

Traditional horror films do nothing for me in terms of fear, i think the excess gore is not really necessary.
Bergmans films like Seventh Seal i find more unnerving, but maybe because it exposes fears i already possess.

It goes a bit silly towards the end (as most horrors do) but one half-decent horror I watched recently was Case 39. I think I enjoyed it because I didn't know what the hell it was beforehand, only that it had Renee Zellweger in it and it begins like it's going to be some serious film about a kid being abused by her parents but then the little twists kick in and one or two moments I found seriously creepy.

Going back to when I was a kid, a film called Don't Look Now gave me nightmares for weeks on end. That is one seriously creepy film!

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the "slasher" type horror films and all these Saw type numbers just do my head in really. I'm not a big fan of this new type of film where literally no one makes it out alive at the end.

Part of the thing with a horror film is that you know that the "good guys" don't ALL die (just most of them) but there's a breed these days where literally everyone DOES die and you think, "Hmm... well, what was the point of that? Might as well have just had them all killed at the start and saved me two hours."

I prefer the ones that are genuinely creepy and scary rather than gory but seperating the wheat from the chaff is a hard job.

The best. No matter what decade there is always going to be some belters. My favourites are.

The Devil Rides Out
Black Sunday
Black Sabbath
Bay Of Blood
Suspiria
Inferno
Tenebrae
Dawn/Day Of The Dead
The Thing
Zombie Flesh Eaters (Zombi 2)
The Beyond
The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue
Reanimator

Some recent films that are worth checking out are.

Martyrs
The Collector
Drag Me To Hell
The Mist
House Of The Devil

some interesting choices but no list is complete without Canibal holocaust
and for a better Sam Raimi film i would chose Evil dead or ED2

The horror moviegoing experience is a must for everyone at least once. There is something cathartic about getting the shit scared out of you and then "escaping" the theater to safety. Although as a child some movie stayed with me a while and caused several sleepless nights including

the omen
Bigfoot
Amityville Horror

Looking back clearly 2 of the 3 were complete rubbish but as a kid i was terrified. I am really into Asian Horror (a tale of two sisters, The Eye, Ringu) atm but I do enjoy the French (Them, Cache, Haute Tension, Martyrs) and i have a special place in my heart for the spanish REC and REC2.

really at this point most American horror films are crap or are remakes of superior foreign films.

I guess a question i would ask that has been asked of me many times is Jaws a horror film?

Absolutely.

For me, american horror right now is just Reboots/Remakes with added gore. You might turn ya head every now and again, but you wont get scared (at least i dont).

Now then, Paranormal activity, did anybody actually find that frightning?

Watched The Hills Have Eyes last night on Film4 as part of their FreightFest season.

The second one just started, not seen this one before though, so it'll be interesting to see if it's any better.

Hills have Eyes remake was not bad at all. One or two very good scenes in it.

Part 2 I switched off after about 30 mins due to it being crap

Has anyone seen Antichrist? Its on Sky this week, I have it recorded but have not decided yet to watch it or not

I've not got to any monster rapists yet in the 2nd one. There wasn't any in the first either was there really?

This one ain't as good as the first like you said, still going to finish it though.

not really in to zombie films , but have seen the Manchester one ,trully a dreadful film.
Best out of that list by miles is The Thing.
Liked Drag me to Hell.
The Mist pissed me off , wanted to know where the monsters and the mist came from , the ending was excellent

FreightFest film of tonight is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 2003 one.

Seen it before, but it's good. Well, not as[/a] good, but not bad at all.

The original TCM is better but I did enjoy the 2003 remake, discounting the terrible attempt in the 90s with McConaughey and Zellweger. That said, the 2003 version wasn't very good.
