The greatest footballer who won nothing

Stanley Matthews, generally rated as the second best winger of all time, won barely anything: 1 FA cup, 2nd division league winner and a few home counties trophies.

Tom Finney is the best shout, however, given he won sweet FA.

Nearly nothing trophies but Juan Carlos Valeron won:

Deportivo:
Spanish Cup: 2001–02
Spanish Supercup: 2000, 2002

Spain U21:
UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship: 1998

David Ginola, One french title and an English League cup.

I define great footballers by trophies, which will be quite paradoxal to do in this thread.

Thats a wrong way of defining then.

Some players may be great but not have played for clubs who won it regularly.

What do people keep mentioning players that won stuff?!

"He only won..."

STOP. We're looking for someone who won nothing.

On that basis, Finney and Le Tissier look like the best suggestions so far. Not Ronaldo or Hassler, who won the World fecking Cup! Poor them.

I'm guessing most people have already mentioned him, but Manucho is heading for this mantle by the end of his career, if we discount the personal offers he's destined to win (FIFA World player of the year is discounted right?)

Did David Ginola ever win anything?

League Cup as well as French league and cups.

Oh and I know we're discussing team titles, but he also won 1999 PFA and Football Writer's player of the year as well remember. Unbelievable.

Adrian Mutu?

As far as I can tell, he left Dinamo Bucharest for Inter before Dinamo sealed the Romanian league and cup double and he missed out on success at Chelsea because of his drugs ban.

But Mutu is shit.

If it is team trophies, then Finney as he won nothing with Preston or England.

He did win footballer of the year twice, the first player to do so.

Also, Finney was far, far greater than Le Tissier, so Tiss is hardly a contender for this particular accolade.

Batistuta won Serie A when he went to Roma

Not that he qualifies as "great" by any stretch... but what has Robbie Keane ever won?

Same goes for Alan Smith.

Fat Ronaldo has won little in his club career.

Apart from the 2 world cups and 2 Spanish league titles?

and the ECWC at Barca in 97,
the UEFA Cup at Inter in 98

Plus a Brazillian Championship in 94
Dutch cup a year later and the Copa del Ray with Barca also in 97

The he won another Brazillan Championship in 2009 playing some inspired (yet overweight) football

Every time I see Finney's name, I think of Shankly and his so called team talks. He apparantly talked tactics for the game ahead for 10 minutes and then talked about Finney for the next half an hour.

They used to say he should get tax relief since he had 10 dependents.

How do you win a WC in your club career?

Like this.. ;)..
