Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango!
It always seems as though footballers are judged by what they win in their career. If a footballer is truly great but doesn't win a league title, his supporters will lament at this injustice (Steven Gerrard?)

Likewise, if a mediocre footballer wins everything, opponents will claim that this somehow devalues his achievements, as the cream is supposed to rise to the top (David May?)

Anyhow, this got me thinking, has there ever been a great (or highly rated) footballer that has won nothing in their career?

To make this slightly easier, I'll count major honours only, so League Championships, National Cups and European (or equivalent) and International Honours.

Can you think of anyone?

I define great footballers by trophies, which will be quite paradoxal to do in this thread.

George Weah?

Poor poor call

Mighty Barrolle

* Liberian Premier League: 1985-86
* Liberian Cup: 1985-86

Invincible Eleven

* Liberian Premier League: 1986-87

AS Monaco

* Coupe de France: 1991

Paris Saint-Germain

* Ligue 1: 1999-94
* Coupe de France: 1992-93, 1994-95
* Coupe de la Ligue: 1995

AC Milan

* Serie A: 1995-1996, 1998-99
* Coppa Italia:

Chelsea

* FA Cup: 1999–2000

I don't think George Best ever played in an International tournament, only qualifying

Unfortunately Georgie was successful with United so he's disqualified.

George Weah?
Socrates and Zico...did they ever win a WC?

Weah won a ton of cups and leagues, including the FA Cup with Chelsea.

Zico won the Copa Libertadores

Socrates I'm not sure of

Carlos Valderrama barring a couple of individual awards didnt win much.

True that he never won anything, there was an FA Cup Final but that was it. No idea how good he was though, he retired over 20 years before I was born.

Lets face it the prems greatest striker- (IMO) Shearer to only have won 1 prem league medal is laughable. Should have been laden with trophies that lad.

despite being a total cnut Stan Collymore was a tremendous footballer, what a waste or talent

does scottish football count as major? if not what did gazza win (apart from his FA cup)

Socrates won a couple of State Championships with Corinthians. I'm unsure if that should count, but if it doesn't he's my definite pick. Awesome man as well.

Edit: Hadn't even read the thread, how could I forget Le Tissier, specially he being one of my favourites.

Thomas Hassler never won anything in the club teams he played,his only trophies are for Germany(WC and EC).

Yes it does, as does the FA Cup.

Heck Fergie has even won two Scottish Football League Division 2 titles as a player.

He won the league at Blackburn but Alan Shearer must be up there.

If he'd come to United when Beckham and Giggs were in their pomp, with Scholes, Keane and Cantona in support he'd not only have scored a record breaking amount of goals but probably won a couple of European Cups on top of loads of domestic honours.

he could have gone to Newcastle after that. he must regret it on some level.

Paul McGrath, one of the best defenders of his generation only ever won 1 FA Cup and 2 League Cups.

Mendieta won the Spanish Cup and the English league cup, both of them 'no one cares' trophies.

Unlucky lad, played in two CL finals and as soon as he left Valencia they went and won the title.

socrates was my first thought, no world cup, even thought they were one of the best teams to take part in 82. He does have three medals for state championships in brazil. Also, by the by, i discovered that Rai who played in and won the world cup for brazil in 1994, is his brother. You learn something new every day....

So, except for being a world and european champion, he didn't really win anything of note...
