To be fair, the player I took was a huge risk in his own right. I wanted to take my favourite player - who would be a very safe pick - but I was looking through the list and I saw how many top-tier players had scored in a European Cup final. I was surprised that he wasn't taken in the first round as well considering the others who were taken.
Let's just say that you better not have a sheep at right back.

Aye, the sheep won't be sheer mugs in all likelihood. There are some candidates that'll be a bit of a nuisance to be stuck with, though. And up to several perfectly decent players whom it will be very difficult to sell to the voters.

My knowledge of pre-CL isn't spectacular, and I'd have to do a good amount of research beforehand to even be slightly helpful. I'm sure there's someone more suited out there.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. No one, NO ONE, went for Messi.
Now to add to that, our beloved VivaJanuzaj had thought of going for Messi, but then thought it would be risky and went for Maldini.
I didn't find Messi going through surprising, was hellbent on going for him third if we didn't have him multiple blocked (or a wall of already picked) this round.

The problem here is any of the obviously safe ones are what you would get anyway, the drop in quality really isn't huge so you may as well take risks... Which makes Messi going to the second round all the more bizarre.

I know he is great, I mean a bore to play against in draft. You are just sat there watching complete randomers chip votes in, zero feedback, or when there is feedback it's some nonsense thing which invariably boils down to "but Messi is too good to vote against". Borefest.

I don't think it would have worked to go "Guys, I'm picking Messi so pick someone else". Could have had a random stab, mind, and hope Rijkaard was still around in the second round, but that's when the credibility the whole thing requires goes to toast. Not that it isn't toast anyway!
