The F1 Thread 2011 Season

I like your edit , but its not the best car by that much and it would not take McLaren much to be on equal footing

Well the McLaren is the only car anywhere close to the Red Bulls. If only the Ferrari was as good as the McLaren. It would be a great battle between Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel then but sadly Ferrari will continue to be shite until it's too late.

Yeah this track really highlights whats cars are good. Red Bull is a monster in the high speed stuff and great traction, McLaren have a great front end with great braking performance and straightline speed, Ferrari are just behind McLaren in terms of whats good but once they put the harder tyres on they sink like stones.

I think everyone thought Red Bull would blow them away today, very suprised by the McLaren pace. I think it confirms that Red Bull do something tricky in qualifying to have the extra speed.

F1 is utter crap, its all about Vettel and Red Bull domination.

Less fuel in the tank & the benefit of brand new tyres. Come the race and the tyre wear combined with the full tank & thats where they struggle to carry on that advantage they have in qualifying.

Still rumoured to have a different engine map, I don't think new tyres and less fuel equates to a car being nearly a second faster than the rest over a single lap.

Sometimes you just have to accept that 1 team is going to be dominant but to call it crap is rubbish. The racing has been excellent, the strategies are making it so unpredictable and although Red Bull are dominating, McLaren aren't too far behind in race conditions. It's been the best start of an F1 season in years. As a racing fan I'm loving it.

Unfortunately I missed the race due to going to the match, so I've just read through the last few pages, there's some epic levels of bitterness going on

It's not bitterness. It's just disappointment that one car is so much better than the rest.

Mate you don't have to rub it in its not bitterness hell I'd rather Alonso win the race and im not a fan of his at all.

Ferrari tech boss Aldo Costa pays price for poor start

Ferrari have restructured their technical team after a disappointing start to the Formula 1 season.

Aldo Costa has stepped down as technical director "to take on new responsibilities within the company".

Pat Fry becomes the director for the chassis department with Corrado Lanzone in charge of production.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel emphasised just how far behind Ferrari are by lapping Fernando Alonso on his way to victory in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.

Vettel won his fourth race of the season, while Alonso, who finished fifth at the Circuit de Catalunya, is Ferrari's closest challenger in fifth place, 67 points adrift.

A statement from Ferrari read: "Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro announces that, as from today, Aldo Costa relinquishes his current position as technical director to take on new responsibilities within the company.

"At the same time, the technical activity has been restructured in three areas: director for the chassis side is Pat Fry, production is in the hands of Corrado Lanzone, while engine and electronics continues with Luca Marmorini. All three report directly to the team principal, Stefano Domenicali."

Fry spent 18 years as chief engineer at McLaren before joining Ferrari in July 2010 and was Costa's deputy.

However, he replaced Chris Dyer as head of race track engineering in a new year reshuffle after Alonso failed to win the 2010 world championship.

Dyer was seen to be paying the price for poor advice to Alonso in Abu Dhabi, when the Spaniard - leading the standings by eight points going into the final race - could only finish seventh.

Ferrari's lack of performance so far this year has already led to Domenicali, Costa and Fry flying back to Italy after the Malaysian GP, instead of travelling to Shanghai for the Chinese GP, in order to investigate the problems.

Since then, Ferrari's best result was third in Turkey and with Vettel claiming his fourth victory out of the first five races of the season in Spain, Domenicali admitted: "If Red Bull keep progressing, then no doubt it [the title] will not be easy."

Ferrari doing what they do best. I like the fact Luca Motezemelo has taken an almost invincible team back to the laughing stock of the pre Todt era. Maybe he should be looking at himself and his kiss arse team manager before sacking anybody else.

I'm suprised they haven't thrown Adrian Newey a boatload of cash, or perhaps they have and he has no interest. Pat Fry was always the logical choice but I doubt he will be the man long term.

Watching the practice now , it really has got to be the best place to watch a F1 race from.
Wish I was going.
It must take a massive amount of work to get the track ready for the race , lots of building of grandstands and such like.

Just seen my seat from the camera on board Alonso....going to be a GREAT view!!

It's hard to believe just how fast these feckers are driving and how narrow the roads are!

From the BBC , dont think F1 wanted this.

"The asphalt here is completely different to Turkey or Barcelona as it's a normal street. The surface does not have the same amount of abrasion. On the soft tyre, the drivers were doing 20/30 laps in the first session with no real drop off. The drivers I spoke to said they did not have any tyre degradation. It's like the Bridgestone era. The option tyre will be key here, can they go the rest of the distance if the primes do 40 laps."
