The Evil Within Trailer

Game looks nice. Graphics looks a bit dated.

In that video, agreed, but in this older video, they look much better. Maybe the gameplay trailer in the OP video are based off the PS3/360 versions, seeing as it's coming out on them too? either way, the game looks ace.

I saw the closed doors gameplay demo of Evil Within today at PAX and it absolutely killed all the hype I had. I wouldn't put much stake on it being great.

The demo was live gameplay and lasted about 15-20 minutes. They played through two areas and showed off the combat and some of the locales. I didn't see anything that I hadn't seen in a trailer so far, in terms of locations.

The first area was that strange area from the trailers with the destroyed city and shifting cliffs. The first 3/4 of this part was just walking through the environment. It came across as completely dull. The character seemed completely unfazed by the way that the environment kept changing (e.g. at several points, buildings and the floor collapse right in front of him and there's no reaction). Towards the end of the section, they introduce the enemies. The player was equipped with a shotgun, sniper rifle, pistol, and a crossbow. There were some stealth elements that reminded me very strongly of The Last of Us (and not in a good way). In fact, it even had a very similar animation that occurs when an enemy grapples onto you. At the end, the guy encountered a water monster which he tried to distract by throwing bottles in the water, but the part ended when he was eaten by it.

The second area was a sort of puzzle section that took place in that strange industrial section that's been in the trailers. Throughout this section, the Box-head character was stalking the guy as he was trying to turn a set of valves. The Box-man can be killed normally by shooting him, but he comes back constantly. This sounded cool at first, but at no point did it seem that the guy was in danger. Add to that the fact that the section seemed to consist solely of:

1. Turn valve
2. 75% through turning valve, Box head shows up
3. Kill Box-head
4. Rinse and repeat

At the end, maybe one or two people clapped. It felt like the room had been super disappointed.

Performance-wise, the demo would hitch up at points (actually freeze for a second or two), but I attribute this to the game simply being still in development. I wasn't sure what platform it was being demo'ed on, but it didn't look great at all.

Shame. I'm not confident in many of the games set to come out this year.

I haven't check whats coming out in the near future but so far it's been pretty dull. I'm at most a causal gamer and from a outsiders view the newer generation of games seem to be taking a turn for the more cinematic approach and less game play. Ryse on the xbox one was essentially a bad movie disguised as a game and this trend has been happen since the tale end of the last generation of consoles.

The best games on the last generation of consoles were for me Limbo(a 2D platform game) and Minecraft, the rest of the time was spent buying old games on Xbox Arcade(Perfect Dark Bully Max Payne)so it's hardly a massive step up the old consoles(Ps2 Xbox ). The new GTA is a good example of this, the game was great achievement just purely on it's size alone and it blew me away at first but just like a glitter covered turd it may look surprisingly good coved in glitter(like most things in life) it's content inside is still a shity mess. As much as I like GTA V I can't say I was any more engrossed in the story any more than I was playing Vice City all those years back and plus Vice City had a great soundtrack.

Even today if you want to play a horror game on a console the best answer is still a game that came out over 10 years ago(Silent Hill 2). I still think for console owners the golden generation ended when the last generation cam about(Xbox 360 PS3).While it's not all doom and gloom (the indie game side of gaming is at least bringing some fun back into the consoles) I do think we are going to see a lot more glitter coved turds in the future

This is one of the games I will get as soon as I buy a PS4 (when Mortal Kombat X is released)

It looks good and will join the queue of games I am yet to play but have no clue in which order, somewhere between Alien and Middle Earth.

Reviews are out already and it's meant to be pretty good. I hate it because this means I'll have to buy it as well.

It's absolutely amazing. Just get it, you won't regret it.
I am picking between Alien, Middle Earth and Evil Within. I will play all eventually but which should I get first?

I'd go for shadow of mordor. Alien drags on way longer than it should but it's still a decent game I guess. Haven't played the evil within yet so can't comment on that.

Just installing updates. Got it last night on psn.

I'll give feedback once I've played a few hours.

Chose this over alien and mordor.

Come on Ol, you won't buy it for at least 12 years anyway

I have 30% off one game if I buy 2 games in gamestop

I reckon I will pick up Forza Horizon 2 and im very much on the fence on this game

Has anyone got it?

Buy Horizon 2 twice, you won't regret it.

Been playing a few hours, I don't see the hype.

Graphics are pretty shite, gameplay is outdated, the horror is pretty cliched and I can already guess the ending.

I didn't know there was hype for you to see?

A lot of previews/reviews have said similar.

You know what I mean Xbot.

Going to persevere with it some more just in case its a slow starter, but so far its a 6/10 game for me, just feels like an awkward fusion between The Last of us and Resident Evil with some random homages to Jacob's Ladder. And Jebus the voice acting :wenger:

I'm annoyed at how clunky and outdated this thing is.

Hopefully the more I play it, the more I'll enjoy it, but at the moment looks like a waste of money and all hype.

Camera angle is frustrating to no end.
Sometimes you literally have no idea what you're supposed to do.
Story has already lost me.
The graphics don't really impress on a PS4.
The voice acting is the scariest thing in the game, it's that bad.
Annoyed that they letterboxed the frame so it makes the camera turning and switching even worse.
Clichéd "going crazy" narrative.

I'll give it a few more hours before I give up on it.

Also, what the feck is up with those huge black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. What is this - 2004? :wenger:

Looks awful, watched a lets play to get an idea of the gameplay and it looks like an early ps3 game with a horrible camera and standard horror gameplay.

Yeah, the Giant Bomb guys reckon Rage on 360 looks better than Evil Within on PS4.

Rage was an engine ahead of it's time.

This seems like the new Alien game in that respect then, something like you'd expect at the start of the last gen.

Yeah. It's cause they were on about how Evil Within performs awfully, like 15-20fps on PS4 and then were comparing it with Rage on last gen with both being ID Tech. At first I thought they meant Rage on 360 looks better than Evil Within on 360, not Evil Within on PS4.

I've not really looked at this. Who developed it?

I got my copy today. So looking forward to giving it a try despite the mixed reviews.

I like how no matter how fecked up the shit you see is your character is just calmly repeating'whats going on here?'

3 hours into the game - "something's not right here"

"What's going on here"

"This is not good"

Also, my favourite (while being chased by a chainsaw-wielding maniac) "I can't let him see me"
