The Europa League 2017/18(Use the SF thread to discuss the current match)

Everton are utter wank. The way they have replaced Lukaku reminds me of how Spurs replaced Bale and how Liverpool replaced Suarez. Maybe Fergie was genius the way he replaced Ronaldo by making Rooney the main man and only buying Valencia. Spunking money on all sorts doesn't work. Then again they didn't actually replace Lukaku with a good striker.

I find peoples expectation on Everton strange. Granted I did expect more from them in the europa league group stage although it is not easy in europe, but apart from that they have done alright.

2 home games against Stoke and Bournemouth won both. Away games against Chelsea, Man United and Man City. One point is what you can expect and few teams will take many points in the 3 most difficult away games of the season. Then playing Spurs at home that is the one team better away from home in the league. 1 point from those 4 would have been my bet before and that is what they got.

Basically they have had the 4 most difficult games they could have had so far and since they struggled people attack them. Granted Rooney is way past it and people expected him to be world class would be deluded. So far Rooney has probably done better than he has here his last two seasons so you can't even be disappointed with him. Scoring against City was great for us and them. Granted they have not had the best transfer window overall, but it is not easy to replace Lukaku for a team like Everton.

That people would suggest fire Koeman already seem to show the crazy world we live in. If they had 0 faith in him they should have got someone else this summer.

1 point from those 4 games is poor. And it's not just the results, it's how pathetic they've looked in those games. They only game they looked decent in was the City one, who were down to 10 men and Everton still fecked it up.

They're absolute shite. Hard start but pathetic attempt.

Of course 1 points from 4 games is not bad, but had those 4 games not been in a row people would not attacking for failing to win at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford.

I didn't see the game against Chelsea, but I do think they played quite well against us although we played better.
Against Spurs they played really poor and against City they played well.
For me for a club like Everton that is what I expect.

If I should list the clubs that started worst based on my expectations Everton are far from among them.

Crystal palace has done worst. Then you got Bournemouth. I also think West Brom has had a poor start with the fixtures they had even if they played well against Arsenal. Southampton not that great either. All those sides have done worse compared to my expectations.

Teams that have done clearly better are Newcastle, Brighton, Watford and Burnley for me.

Huddersfield have done well too, but I did think based on the fixtures they had they would have a decent start. They have done slightly above expectations though.
Liverpool roughly as I expected. Arsenal and Spurs a bit worse. We have done slightly better than I thought. City slightly better as well. Chelsea on par.

The rest of the team have roughly the same amount of points I expected based on the fixtures.

I agree that the team they have do have big flaws. They have Rooney and Sigurdsson in the same team that like to take up the same areas. They lack both good wingers with pace that can create chances and stretch teams and they also lack pace and movement up front. Calvert Lewin can give them some of that, but they seem to not play him very much.

They also have central midfielders that lack much quality going forward. That make it very easy for other team to focus on removing the few players they have that can create things like Sigurdsson.

Add to that Bained is getting older and the defense is not that great. Although I still think that is the best area for them. Coleman being injured is a huge blow for them as he is one of the few top class players they have.

They looked like a pub team against chelsea, spurs and city(city were just as pathetic in the first half and pretty bad in the second). Only against united did they look like a premier league side. One that should fight for relegation.

And no, for a club like everton that is not should be expected. They're supposed to be a very good team, but they're wank. English teams just suck big hairy balls when it comes to scouting, it's kind of amazing. Like performance art, "how to throw away a lot of money and make the rest of the world laugh at us to our faces"

Can't wait for Lyon vs Atalanta tomorrow. They both have two of my favourite players in the world in Nabil Fekir and Alejandro Gomez
It was a fun game and both players didn't disappoint.

Fekir could have had a couple of assists and, in general, his play was good. His play for Traoré's goal  Should have it down as his assist for that alone. Gomez, early on in the game, was one of the only Atalanta players who could keep his cool and resist Lyons press. What a goal, too! As well as both being the catalysts for their teams attacking play, they both worked incredibly hard defensively, too. Looking forward to the return match!

Tu quoque, Hoffenheim...
Ridiculously bad weeks for German football.

Is it though? German teams have won two club competitions in Europe in the last 20 years. If the national teams didn´t reach a major semifinal every two years, basically every year if you include the U-teams and women´s teams, it would have come into focus a lot earlier. English fans threw a hissyfit over a European club drought of 4-5 years.

Champions League

Spain 10
England 4
Italy 3
Germany 2
Portugal 1

Euro League

Spain 7
England 3
Italy 2
Portugal 2
Russia 2
Ukraine 1
Netherlands 1
Turkey 1
Germany 0

The 20 years before that Germany won 7 trophies and that does not include Bayern´s CL triple. The fact that Italy and Portugal were more successful also shows it´s not just about the money. Sometimes a good team can win these competitions with great coaching and clutch play, which I think has been lacking for a long-time in Germany. There is no excuse for Germany not winning a single Europa League in 20 years. Dortmund should have won it, the year Liverpool made the final. They had the best team. Bayern should have won more than one CL in the last 6-7 years.

I'm not debating these points, not winning any games in the group phases is an entirely different thing, though.

Easy 3pts vs Red Star for Arsenal imo, their players will burn out in desire to do good. To bad the quality of Red Star cant match the atmosphere

Cracking goal from Kabananga in the Astana v Maccabi Tel Aviv game. Maccabi managed by our very own Jordi Cruyff but they've been pitiful! Down by three goals now.

Arsenal will likely coast the Europa with a second string team till they reach the last 16. Then it could get interesting to see how they cope.

I heard Lyon are missing their 2 best defenders? Something about the Everton-Lyon game screams draw for me.
