The Draw:

Dipping my toe in for a first post....
There's no easy games once you get to this stage of the tournament, if you've made it this far then it's for a bloody good reason.
I'm a Liverpool fan (please refrain from the obvious abuse) and I'm of the opinion that whoever we (or you) were drawn against, it would be tough to progress. Having seen the draw, I now think that we will have a slightly better chance of progressing. Mind you, the emphasis is on slightly.
Here's hoping we both make it through as I reckon a semi of us vs you could be one of the all-time classic European ties. So good, in fact, that you wouldn't even begrudge our eventual final win. ;)

Bring on the scousers I say...

I don't think I watched a Leverkusen game, what style do they play? They're top of the German league aren't they?

potentially the worst draw possible I don't doubt we will beat Deportivo though agame against the scum as much as I hate to say it is gonna be a toss up. There is so much emotion it is a matter of rising to the big occasion which in recent years we have not done I guess this is the time to lay some ghosts to rest and if Bayer win I wager we win the whole thing no matter what happens on the other side of the draw

Typical German side to be honest...

They beat Depor 3-0 at home in the group stages so the're not the pushover everyone thought they were after the Arse game...

That said though, the've been hammered badly by Juve and the Arse so unpredictable is the word i'd use to describe them...

I reckon the poo will be too strong for them tho..

It'll be us v them in the semi...

I am not so sure about that, they are really unpredictable.....and history has shown how german teams can rise to the occasion once they have reached later stages of a tournement.

True, and I suppose Owen won't be back in time for the first leg (home leg?).

So say we make the semi's...

You'll have to get past 2 teams who've beaten you 5 times between them this season to make the final..

Off you go

;)

This is not a good draw. Deportivo and Liverpool don't suit us. Maybe the best way to beat them is to stay tight in defense, and then hit them with counter attacking football. I only hope Giggs stays fit.
The away games will be crucial. I would not want us to be dependant upon beating Deportivo at home.

I can see revenge on the horizon. The Red Devils are coming for Depo and wipe out the misery of 2 defeats. Then when we're finished with them its onto the Scum and put those last 5 defeats behind us, what better revenge than to knock them out of the semi's.

Then the Real stuff starts. Whts the bets we win 4-3 in the final ;)

Just saw some worrying facts
FromTheTerrace:
The general feeling amongst fans over the years is that it is always better to play your first leg away from home. That way, you can go into the return leg at home 'knowing what we need to do'. And with our particular away record in Europe, perhaps it is just as well that we can get our trip to Spain over with before taking them on at Old Trafford.

Yet isn't at Old Trafford where we have slipped up in both of our last two seasons? Last year a late Paulo Sergio goal was enough to give Bayern Munich victory in the quarter-finals, and at the same stage the season before Real Madrid came to Manchester and knocked three past us.

Come to think about it, it isn't just the past two years. Remember Borrusia Dortmund in 1997? We played in Germany in the semi-final first leg and went down to a solitary strike, yet thought with home advantage we could easily turn it around. But an early goal for the Germans at Old Trafford killed the tie off.

A year later it was the turn of Monaco. We held them to a goal-less draw in Monte Carlo before David Trezuguet fired in the all-important away goal at Old Trafford past Raimond van der Gouw to dump us out at the quarter-final stage – again.

Call me naïve, but the only way to approach this two-legged tie with Deportivo is to attack them from the first whistle in Spain, then do the same at Old Trafford. Let them worry about us – we know we are good enough, now is the time to prove it.

true mate ...... they usually slip vs the 'small teams' ...... although they did get a huge 2 points from BOAVISTA

REVENGE SHALL BE SWEET !

absolutely, agreed. we need to score over there. if we don't, it's big trouble. the good thing about playing first leg away is that, in theory, we could have the tie wrapped up. 2-0 win away from home, anyone?

given that, of the teams in the last eight, the two fergie would most have wanted to avoid would have been real and deportivo, the fates were against us. win our group or come second, looks like we were destined for one or the other.

found this quote from Giggsy, pre-draw:

'Most observers see Greek champions Panathinaikos as easier opposition but Giggs said: 'A few people have suggested we would like to avoid Deportivo because they beat us home and away in the first group phase but that's rubbish.

'There's no denying they're a quality side and are capable of winning the whole thing, but we've got a score to settle there. '

Its time to walk the walk....

Barcelona really didn't deserve an easy tie!

if you think about it, the four worst teams are playing each other, and the four best are playing each other.

panathinaikos would have been hoping for liverpool, barca or bayer.

liverpool were hoping for bayer or pan.

barca were hoping for pan or bayer.

barca and liverpool are luckiest of all. they definitely didn't deserve easy ties, but got them.

Don't worry! It seems destined that fate give us the opportunities to take our revenge against depor, dipper(if they do qualify) and real.

What utter cr@p both of those sides survived the "group of death" and yet you feel they deserve a tough draw in the 1/4ers aswell?!

I think it's only fair that yourselves, Bayern and Real have tricky ties as you had such easy groups in the last round......

I wouldn't underestimate Leverkusen.

BTW From RI:
The official site is saying that the first leg of the quarter final will be played in Spain on Tuesday the 2nd with the return at OT on Wednesday the 10th.

They are also reporting that our side of the semis will be played on Wednesday 24th and Tuesday 30th April.

The same source got it famously wrong last year but we suspect that this time it is accurate though we cannot get it confirmed for sure as soon as we do we will let you know.

UEFA are claiming that one of the semis will be played on 31st April a date that does not even exist - confusion reigns

I'm not, but they are by far the weakest team they could have got..

Living in Germany I know a bit about Leverkusen like how they shit their pants when they go away to Bayern so Liverpool are as good as through in my opinion. United will beat D.la Coruna if we play to our strengths. By that I mean attack them and take the game to them they will not stand a chance in an attacking game agianst Man-Utd. As long as we do not play defence too much we will get through. ( a bit of defensive play is important away, and I am 100% sure that SAF will play the same formation against them as he did in the group game.

From UEFA.com

Quarter-finals 1st leg
2 April 2002
Bayern München v Real Madrid 20:45
Dep. La Coruña v Man. United 20:45

3 April 2002
Liverpool v Bay. Leverkusen 20:45
Panathinaikos v Barcelona 20:45

No luck there mate it is as group winners that you get to play away first

:)

These are the teams each of us faced untill now...

ManUtd
Deportivo La Coruna
Bayern
Olympiakos
Lille
Nantes

Liverpool FC
AS Roma
FC Barcelona
Borussia Dortmund
Dynamo Kiev
Galatasaray

Can anyone honestly say that LFC did not have the most difficult opponents, untill now? I for one can admit that this time United have had the more difficult draw, allthough you can never underestimate the Germans if you ask me...

In any case: both sets of fans have some nice games to look forward to, and LFC fans even more so than you, since we will have one extra game...

;)
