Cruyff is one player that I don't think will have an issue played on the left, on the right, false 9 or centrally. He was the definition of total football. He understood the game and was probably the most cerebral player in the modern game. He floated a lot, it's not like he'll be sticking and occupying 20 sq meters of the pitch the whole game. He'll pull back, push forward, stretch the play and get into the box. It's not the position that would define whether he'll fit in the formation but the personel around him.

You need players that are on the same wavelength, technical, creative and fast that can exploit the space but also create space for Johann himself. Henry and Schiaffino are such players and I think he'll be pretty fine and looking at a peak Cruyff here.

For me that Cruyff was at best as a false 9 is a bit of a myth.

for example take the 1974 WC and in the final formation you had Cruyff as a false nine in 4-3-3 flanked by Rep and Rensenbrink, yet here are highlights of his touches during the game.

He was much involved in the build up, often taking the ball from deep, defended like a midfielder, and always looked for space. You can see also having another attacker in the box when he had the ball. It's pretty much a free role Cruyff as always, it doesn't matter if you put him left, right or center in formation. If you restrict him to occupy a winger role and restrict his inside movement is another matter, but as a part of a front three with Hanegem and Schuster in deeper positions it's really non issue and as I've said pretty much at his best.

1. I agree.

2. When I say 'I prefer him as a false 9', it means 'I want him with players able to offer solutions both in the penalty area and on the wings'. So, I'm very happy with the choices of Henry and Cabrini regarding the left flank. However, I'm just sceptical regarding the right flank if the idea is to take the most out of Cruyff.

3. If Cruyff acts as deep-lying playmaker - in a Total Football configuration -, then he would have more options if 2 other players are able to play like a striker/CF. Rep, Rensenbrink and Thierry Heny can do that. Schiaffino - a GOAT of course - is rather a playmaking/attacking midfielder. Indeed - in a Total Football scenario - a player who moves out of his position is replaced by another from his team, thus retaining the team's intended organisational structure. In this fluid system - in a dream world - no outfield player is fixed in a predetermined role and anyone can successively play as an attacker, a midfielder and a defender.

4. Also easier for Cruyff to find spaces if the other offensive players are able to outflank the opposing team. Schiaffino isn't Rep (on my bench BTW) and Cabrini & Mc Grain are not pure wingers or wing-forward.

Of course, Cruyff can shine in any circumstances but it's unfortunate - IMHO- not to have:

- Henry + Cruyff + another striker able to diversify his game OR
- Henry + Cruyff + a right-winger/right wing-forward.

Sciaffino is extremely brilliant but Pat/Skizzo don't need him when you have Cruyff on the pitch.

While I don't think it will change much in the grand scheme of things, I'd like to throw together our original plan to give the lads a run out as they wanted.

Cruyff looking to play in between the lines of defense and midfield, Henry and Simonsen cutting in and offering width behind the wing backs, and pushing Rijkaard up into the midfield to take control of the battle there. McGrain will be slightly more reserved on the outside, keeping a more defensive side of his game to work on keeping tight at the back. If Cabrini or Passarella push on, Rijkaard will drop back to help cover.

@Chesterlestreet if you're able to update the OP, if not, no worries :)

Sorry @Downcast for not being around to offer much discussion with you!

If you put it this way then yeah I agree with you :)

And BTW as I've mentioned in the main draft that's massive team you have here, well done.

Finally this midfield is playing as it should've  So balanced

1. Yes! Much better. Cruyff, Van Hanegem & Schuster would have more freedom in this scenario.

2. Don't worry mate! I can speak with myself :)

Thanks but I still believe your offensive trio is more impressive.

Yeah in the grand scheme of things, this was probably a better line up for us. In the end, I don't think there was any way we were going to win this game :)

And you do it better than the rest

Congrats! Can't see you losing this draft unless you get rather unlucky with "injuries"

Undoubtedy, in my opinion. I like that team - well balanced.

No chance whatsoever. Too much sheer quality and not enough flaws, setup wise. I don't think that team is seamless by any stretch, but it's simply too powerful at this stage.

Agreed on both counts. I thought you were going to line up in a 4-1-2-1-2 (which is basically how you finished the game). You could have thrown the kitchen sink at Downcast in the match thread, battoned down the defensive hatches, but it would still have been tough to get on par with that XI.

Cheers. :) @Pat_Mustard @Skizzo

You have wonderful players so I'm sure some managers are going to pick them

Maybe the quality of your squad is unequal because you have some brilliant offensive players on the bench as Totti.

As you could guess, the worst case scenario would be to lose both Maradona & Scirea... and another lucky scenario would be the loss of my 2 weakest players.

Congrats mate, and I hope the injury round is kind to you :)
