The change in mentality and connection with the fans

We already had a few potentials - like Bruno, Fred, Varane - but they weren't enough given the rest of the broken dressing room and the lack of a togetherness and winning mentality that had built up over recent years.

Main credit goes to ETH for being the kind of manager who prioritises that kind of spirit and has targeted the right players to quickly achieve it.

All of our summer signings have it to a good level, and combine that with good ability and, in Casimero especially, a great winning mentality.

Weghorst also looks to have the right attitude as well, so we've quickly assembled the kind of numbers in the squad that you need to successfully achieve a real team spirit and winning mentality and that's clearly being reflected on the pitch and it's great to see.

I think it all comes back to momentum, and it's such an underrated thing in my view. We have momentum as a club now, and the fans are really behind the team because of things we're seeing and hearing on and off the pitch.

ETH has us consistently winning games, playing good football, and making crucial signings that have elevated us. We've cleared the deadwood, and everyone is pulling in the same direction.

The beauty of winning is that there's no room for moaning, leaks or player power. When the team has momentum, those on the fringes try harder to break into that starting 11. It's a complete mentality shift, because we've had too long with moaners like Lingard, Ronaldo, Bailly and Henderson whinging when we're not playing well and suggesting that they can give something different to change our fortunes.

That's why I think seeing Shaw at CB, Malacia at LB, AWB and Fred also starting is so crucial for how ETH is managing the squad and morale. Players get in the team on merit, and they're delivering results and essentially throwing the gauntlet down to those on the bench, showing them what they need to do to get in the starting 11.

I've no doubt we'll see Martinez and Antony back starting most crucial games if they're fit, but there's a clear culture and ethos that has started from ETH, worked it's way onto the pitch and into the stands, and the club has got this momentum going right now which is just so important.

Lastly, I love not having to read apology posts anymore. I really hated those. Now the fans are seeing players do their talking on the pitch.

This young kids after seeing Casemiro, Fred, etc coming to the crowd in the corner - you can see the joy on their faces. They won’t forget that moment. Great day for them.
Here’s to many more!

I rated ETH but, even so, I am surprised by the speed of the transformation. Beyond all the tactical sophistication, it’s clear that the players, including multiple CL winners like Varane and Casemiro, believe in him and his ability to transform United. Maybe this will be the final nail in the coffin of the pernicious myth that a manager needs a huge amount of time and almost an entirely new squad before you can expect to see major improvements.
To be fair we did needed key signings. We changed our center back. Signed a lb that lit up a fire in Shawbeto’s belly. We gotten 2 starting midfielders - 1 who is world class.
The difference before Casemiro and after is huge.

ETHis great but he cannot do magic so fast without these key signings. The club must back him and not dally like before.

I can imagine we would be a lot closer to Arsenal now if we would have gotten these key signings before first game of the season.

Casemiro and Varane are fecking loving it here. Guarantee they’re in the dressing room convincing everyone in there that the title is there for the taking.

Apart from just being serial winners, they probably both have a small chip on their shoulders from being the least heralded players in their pairings (Ramos seen as ahead of Varane, Modric an all-time great whereas Casemiro and Kroos one tier lower). If they win a title or CL here after the decade we've had, it's different.

Some big hearts beating in the team right now. Casemiro, Martinez and Varane have levelled us up hugely. Not only with quality but character and passion too. Monsters all 3 of them.

Additionally, Shaw and Bruno’s qualities are now not so isolated, they look immeasurably better and both of them are fecking great footballers with enormous drive.

Rashford has grown as a player no doubt and Dalot too. Fred looks top drawer next to Casemiro and even AWB yesterday looked incredible.

It’s so good having these players, all of them very easy to love because you can see the desire, the effort and the sheer joy when their quality pays off. This is what we need as fans.

There have been too many passengers in this team over the last few years. Definitely my lowest ebb with football in a long time. Not because of results or lack of trophies, simply because there were so few players to rally behind. No heroes. Not now!

ETH, regardless of how we finish this season, whether or not we win a trophy, it shouldn’t matter. The new manager has given us the best gift already. In a few short months he’s given us a proper United team. Good football to watch again at long last. I watched the highlights again last night and couldn’t help but think that the highlight reel looked similar to highlight reels of Fergies years. Great stuff.

Heroes. We all need them. Sure, you’ll always love the club but it’s always important to love the team and that’s been the tricky part the last few years. Not now. Heroes everywhere you look.

It was pretty clear who the bad eggs in the dressing room were, and they’ve all been moved on. Also helps they’ve been replaced by fighters and being managed by someone who demands nothing but 100%.

Yes indeed.
You are quite right about those players who were the prime cause of what is referred to as bad eggs. Character and mental toughness is so important in creating a winning environment.

Bringing in Varane and Casemiro was brilliant business. They’re just pure winners and have such an elite mentality. It’s funny that rival fans and pundits that support or played for other teams was saying these players are either done or won’t change anything. They’re only joining us for the money. That’s because we’ve had that a lot over the years, signing big name players who don’t care about us and just the money but these 2 absolutely love it here and are showing that they love the badge.

This.

Man I love a lot of em but have always had a soft spot for Fred, the bloke, more than the player. So happy to see that happy smile playing like this and getting love from the fans.

Casemiro, man, what a freaking stud. I had no clue he could mean this much.
Always liked Fred too, he's looks like such a positive guy, I'm so glad he's doing all right.
Influence Casemiro has brought in immense. From a winner mentality to the connection he has with the club and the fans. It's such a beautiful sight to see.

Heard a story a while back of Carrick saying he came into the changing room the morning after a bad loss and Lingard and Pogba were dancing about and couldnt care less. Seen a Lingard video the other day and he is at the same craic at Forest. Thank feck that type of influence is gone as well as that tosser Henderson.

It's easier to say because we won the game. But, the effort, passion, determination, and even quality at times is there for all to see. Even if we didn't win that game, I wouldn't be able to fault any of our players on the pitch or the manager/coaching staff.

I largely like this group of players and the feeling at our club. Win, lose, or draw, we definitely feel United. Regardless of what happens this season, that feeling is what was missing most. It's back.

Thats some roy keane's drive there. Old Trafford has been missing this energy since a long time

This is the connection I grew up with, and I fecking loved it. When Fergie left, that connection was lost, and the last 3-years under Ole felt fecking soulless. The work ETH is doing behind the scenes, and on the pitch is absolutely incredible.

Christ I’m teary eyed watching all these awesome videos, what a wuss:)

You're not alone. I was reasonably calm after the win yesterday but watched a few of these clips later in the evening with a huge grin on my face and have to admit I got a bit emotional. It's just so nice to see the players showing that amount of passion again.

Varane close-up:

Yes it’s clear to see the fans are absolutely on board with the players and they’re likeable again. The only exception is probably Martial, there was a fair amount of criticism aimed at him yesterday and EtH is addressing that.

I think the players and people we got rid of have been just as integral as who we brought in, in terms of where the current squad vibe is, but the absolute main reason behind it all is ETH.

rashford, who has been almost our only source of goals recently, was dropped for oversleeping and missing a meeting. Joelinton gets arrested for drunk driving and Keeps his place in the team… ETH has won the respect of his players and he is clearly the boss, and my god we have needed someone like him for a decade.

Helps the fans aren't being toxic as feck about everything

whether it’s age or priorities, the salaries they earn, the results, or the greed of the owners, i’m losing my connection with football, the club, and the players in general. united have been a big part of my life, i’ve planned endless weekends around fixtures, i’ve arrived late to events because i’ve been watching the match, i’ve made excuses not to be somewhere so i can make sure that i’m there. i’ve watched us and believed the players felt the same. i’ve been swept along in the “us against the world” mentality. i’ve felt part of something bigger. i’ve felt home.

i don’t want to lose that. i don’t want to contemplate waking up on matchday and not thinking at all about the game. i don’t want to see us linked to a player and think “we’ll turn him shit any way.” i don’t want to watch the news and feel nothing when the sports reporter reads out that we’ve lost. again.

there are somethings i can’t change about the club; our owners, our governance, the ground falling apart, the inadequate training facilities, the incompetence that’s rife at every level, but what i can do is try to connect with the players. no matter what level of football you’re watching and supporting, that connection to the players is what keeps it all alive. i want to feel like shouting at the top of my lungs. i want to clap every challenge, cheer every lung-busting run. i don’t want to look at the likes of sancho and feel he doesn’t care as much as me. i don’t want to look at maguire labouring around and assume it’s because he thinks he’s better than this.

i doubt i’m alone in all this. none of us want to lose all that. let’s get the players back onside, let’s try to understand them. let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. let’s shower them with love and affection, let’s give them a platform of hope to play on. let’s make old trafford our theatre of acceptance. i propose we start straight away with the brighton game one the 16th september. it’s a 3 o’clock kick off. let’s get in as soon as the gates open. let’s run past the beers, the toilets, the coffees and the teas, let’s get to our seats. let’s open our hearts and minds and let’s beat the shit out of our women and show the players that we’re just like them.
