marco van basten v russia in the euro final 88 for me

1986 World Cup

Diego Maradona vs England (2-1)

Marco van Basten v Russia Euro Final 88, just for you Jens:

<a href="http://spysports.psend.com/MarcoVanBasten1.mpg" target="_blank">http://spysports.psend.com/MarcoVanBasten1.mpg</a>

And in slow-mo REPLAY:

<a href="http://spysports.psend.com/MarcoVanBasten2.mpg" target="_blank">http://spysports.psend.com/MarcoVanBasten2.mpg</a>

Glenn Hoddle once scored a better volley for Spurs than the Van Basten effort...can't think who it was against...but of course it wasn't on the World stage like most of the contenders for best goal ever.

The importance of a goal and and under what circumstances it was scored matter a great deal in the reckoning...

this is why Maradona's 2nd goal against England and Giggsy's FA cup goal against the Arse are such strong contenders for best goal ever...

They were both winning goals in important matches of high drama as well as being moments of sublime individual brilliance.

agreed with redpie's point.

You know who, for you know who, in the game that you know.

Ok in English
Ryan Giggs for United v Arsenal in the cup semi replay April 99

the volley outside the box? the one he struck when the ball was inches of the ground???

If you think Maradona's run in 86 is the best, then the Saudi dude's goal in 94, and Giggsy's run against the Arse in 99 have to be right there as well. Maradona himself described Giggsy's goal as the 'Goal of the century'.

My vote goes to Klaus Fischer - Germany v France in the 82 WC semis.

No relation. Killer goal though. Overhead kick to tie the score at 3-3 in the 2nd period of extra time in the semis of the Spain 82. It doesn't get more dramatic than that, especially since France were up 3-1 in extra time.

I am suprised George Weah's wonder goal in Serie A years ago (Vs. Sampdoria?) is not included.

Defending a corner (?) Weah picked up the ball in his own area, ran past the whole opposition and then cracked in a drive from the edge of the area - amazing, and all this within twelve seconds.

For importance and spectaculism under pressure it would have to be Maradona's Vs. England or Ryan Giggs' against Arsenal in the F.A. Cup. Both were amazing and individual goals always stick out for me.

Marco van Basten also scored an incredible strike against Russia, when I first saw it I thought I was dreaming.

A Saudi Arabian player scored a really good goal at the '94 World Cup, I think.

Micahel Owen's goal against Argentina was very overated in my opinion, Bergkamps goal against Argentina or Beckham's Vs. Columbia were much, much better goals.

yeah, that's the one(still don't know what game)...it was his body shape as he struck it as much as anything...poised,balletic,how he hung in the air stiking a pose for what seemed an age.
The guy who draws the Roy of the Rovers stuff would blush if he tried to put it into a comic strip...the stuff of schoolyard fantasies.

Weah's goal was good but he did'nt take on 'everyone' and he did get tackled half way through. Plus it was a scrappy finish compared to Giggsys.

Nah nah, Ronald De Boer scored a backheel from a cross a couple of weeks ago and quite rightly it wasn't even Goal of the Month.

Here's a few nominations:

Maradona v England
Van Basten v Den Bosch
Carlos v Tenerife (?) (corner flag goal)
Rivaldo v Valencia (the scenario in which it was scored in makes it more important and memorable than Giggs' run)
Mendieta v Barca (super cup volley)
Yeboah v Wimbledon
Yeboah v Liverpool
Weah v Sampdoria(?)
Gascoigne v Aberdeen 1996
Seedorf (Real) v Bilbao 97
Chilavert v River 96
Ronaldo v Compostela (?)
Kily Gonzalez volley earlier this season

It was a measured, accurate finish into the bottom corner just when it looked like he was going to get tackled, whereas Giggs' was one of his standard "blast it and hope for the best" efforts. I guess it depends how you appreciate true footballing genius.

BTW, does anyone have any links to some of the goals mentioned? :D

Trevor Sinclair scored the best overhead kick I've ever seen wile he played for QPR. I think it may have been in the First Division but I am not sure. Feckin brilliant finish anyway!!!

it's the same for me.

Only a thing dear Piersi... we won 3-1, not 2-1 :D (don't u remember Vieri's goal? ;) )

It was in the FA Cup - against Burnley I think.

Quite a while back but won goal of the season on Match of the Day.

still miss Marco...
what a shame his career was ended because of all the fouls commited on him.

Here's a description of Marco van Basten:
"A powerfully built player with explosive pace and World Class athleticism.
Scoring spectacular goals, in particular volleys and overhead kicks, were his
trademark. A complete forward - dangerous with both left and right foot,
sensational in the air and equally adept at making goals as well as
scoring them. His performances in big matches, particularly finals, were
nothing short of outstanding. Arguably the greatest striker in the history
of this sport, unquestionably one of the greatest players of all time."

That 1 was made to look good by the fact (rolled up stockings) which they used as a ball in them days - had a lot of swerve!!!

;)

Actually, I think it was Matt Bahr (who had two sons play as place kickers in the [American} NFL who launched a shot at the far post. The English goalie, Bert Williams, moved into position, but Gaitjens came out of nowhere, barely got his head on the ball and deflected it past Williams. The actual aerodynamics of the lopsided pig bladder used in those days might also have been a factor.

The US, as you know, hasn't done much in the World Cup since.

Nah, it's one I scored at Hough End about fifteen years ago, I came in from the right wing, I was right footed but like all great footballers I can use both feet......

I thought Norman in the Cup Final and tried to bend it low into the far left hand corner of the net, the ploy worked to perfection as I completely bamboozled the goalie by sending the ball flying right into the top right hand corner, it was a moment, a real moment, I could have been a contender....... :) .........

Carlos in the Tourni D'France
Van basten vs Den Bosch
Beckham vs Wimbledon
Maradona's second vs England
George Best against ___ in the NASL
Ronaldo vs Alaves
Weah vs Verona
Figo vs England in Euro2000

Barnes, against Brazil I think, took it round about 4 people in the box and then the keeper, brilliant.

Owen V's Argies 98

Giggs V Arsenal 99

Arie Haan - Holland v's Italy either '74 or '78 WC, I think it was '78... He 'kin blasted it from about 45yds out and it went straight, no dip, no swerve, into the back of Zoff's net.

Not the best ever but deserves a mention imo.
Zoff could've done better though.

it was '78, and indeed a very nice goal.
