Not sure that you can say that Sanchez is a better goalscorer than Leonidas. If anything, it's the other way round, judging purely on stats (which we shouldn't, of course).
Consider the fact that Hugo Sanchez won the European Golden Boot at the 1989/90 season when players like van Basten and Romario were around. Consider the fact that he won 5 Pichichis from 1985 to 1990. Consider the fact that Sanchez is the fourth-highest goalscorer in the history of Spain's top division.

Leonidas is a great striker, no doubt, and his scoring record is definitely impressive, but what Sanchez was doing impresses me much more, especially since Real Madrid already had another great goalscorer in Butragueno in the team.

On top of that, ever since he moved out of Estudiantes, he's played as more of an attacking midfielder than a second striker, but he displayed his goalscoring prowess as a second striker with Estudiantes (53 in 146).

Independiente, wasn't it?

@Aldo hasn't made a single post in this thread. Strange. Hope he's fine & still amongst us.

Krap. I was hoping we'd avoid that.

We'll probably need a stand-in for Aldo. Does anyone know how lengthy his temp-ban was?

Good thing he set up a solid enough side to stand in without him. His team did a great job considering that they didn't have their manager on the sideline for the match.

Aye, cheers. Hopefully it's a day or so, he just got back from his RedCafe vacation.

Maybe someone will clarify the situation @Rado_N @Damien? Can we expect @Aldo 's return soon to finish the game or do we need to think of other ways to do it?
If the length of his supposed ban can be discussed, obviously
Thanks

edit: never mind

So what'll happen now? Will we wait until Aldo gets back?

EDIT: Ignore this post. Let's go!!!

EDIT 2: We play against each other for the second time, and we go to penalties again. Something tells me that lady luck may not be on my side this time.

I'll wait until Aldo responds before I send out my shootout plans to Chester (or whoever else is interested).

By the way, is the shootout approach the same old, traditional way, or are we going with something different this time?

Re Goycochea. I remember the 1990 World Cup Final when West Germany were awarded that penalty, thinking there's no way Goycochea is going to be beaten here. Even moreso with the several minutes of so of chaos following the award and before it was taken, further heaping the pressure on Brehme. Balls of steel that man. It was an inch-perfect penalty though and, to be fair, Goycochea was very close to it.

Right. Let's crack on.

Sanchez will get things started, stepping confidently up. He doesn't mess around, fires it dead centre, gambling on Goycochea gambling...

...which he does: He dives left.

1-0

Up for Aldo, Enzo Francescoli. He follows the Mexican's example.

...and the result is the same: Bravo goes left and concedes.

1-1

Didi next. An extraordinary penalty. He hits it dead-leaf style and...

...it somehow dips right in below the cross bar. Goycochea could have taken it had he remained.

2-1

Leonidas now. No misses so far. The Brazilian legend hits it hard...

...but Bravo's there. Pressure's on if it weren't already.

2-1

Bravo, who just saved one, will now attempt to bury one too...

...but he doesn't! Too cocky by half and the advantage is gone.

2-1

Roberto Carlos can level it again. He hits it low - and hard...

...but Bravo's there again! He's clearly better off focusing on saving 'em.

2-1

Mario Zagallo steps up for MMR. He looks cool enough...

...and he is. Yet another clever one - down the middle, and the Argentine penalty expert acrobatically dives where he should've waited out his man.

3-1

Make or break time. Can Passarella keep Aldo in this? The formidable penalty marksman hits it...

...but it's another one in Bravo's corner.

And it's all over.

3-1

In case you're wondering, mazhar went with the old "uniform" method here: Bravo goes left every time - all the shooters aim for the middle.

Okay, I went out for lunch because I couldn't handle the suspense. I'm so glad to see that we won!

@Aldo It was a great tactical battle even with you not around. I hope we can play against each other again in the next draft.

Your team was quite a solid unit, but I felt like the lack of a midfield playmaker kind of went against you. If you had a playmaker in your team, you could have had a good chance.
