The “January isn’t the best time to make signings” line

Very curious to see how Glazers approach this window.

We appear to have spun led all our money apparently but are on the verge of a possible sale, Ronaldo gone so we need another striker, could CL qualification impact on the sale, do the Glazers speculate to accumulate or do they think feck it, ain’t our problem anymore?

2019-20
SUMMER: James, AWB, Maguire
WINTER: Bruno, Bishop

2020-21
SUMMER: Van de Beek, Telles, Cavani, Pellistri
WINTER: Amad (joined in winter, signed in summer)

2021-22
SUMMER: Heaton, Sancho, McShane, Varane, Ronaldo
WINTER: None
Out of three years of transfers one player is part of our starting XI currently. And they've all been bought within the last three and a half years. Incredibly bad business.

I’ve been through buy outs in my own work and I have to say that it’s impossible to get sign off on buying a new pen never mind anything else. Im struggling to see us getting more than a loan in if they are truly selling the club.

I think it's more a factor of teams not letting their star players (the kind we usually chase, lets be honest) in the middle of a season where they have performance goals to meet. Unless the players are out of contract in the summer.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too, they’ll be doubling down on the whole January is a difficult time to buy.

Yeah I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they do but it’ll certainly not be the big names everyone is cooing over. Secondly I don’t see us getting more than a striker in January. Only because the need is there with Ronaldo gone and martial as resilient as a twig

Yeah strikers in January is really tough

The only way I can see it is if we're ready to pay an extra 15-20M over the sticker price for the guy we like (Ramos, for example), Juve needing cash immediately and Vlahovic choosing us, or one of the free players in Moukoko or Thuram being tapped up by us and telling their clubs they'll leave for free so might as well take 10M now. And I still think Dortmund might say no.

Why would they spend money when they're about to sell the club?
Regardless of the month the chance is slim.

To increase the value of the club. Duh. :)

Like spending money on renovating your house before selling it. Can get you a profit.

It's a bad time for recouping cost through marketing initiatives. There's very little time to build hype or put together the material needed to increase hype and sell shirts, particularly when people know there will be a new one out in 6 months time. Usually you need a lead time of at least 3 months for all this, hence why we tend to protract discussions.

Other clubs haven't caught on yet but I'm glad we've not fallen victim to this frankly outdated January transfer idea.

A petrified one at that.

Our best signings have been Varane, Casemiro, Martinez, Bruno. Only one was a Jan signing.

Which clubs am I missing that have made great Jan signings?
And which clubs have all clocked on this Winter?
Hi RAB,

Thanks for your questions and your interest in this thread

I'm just delighted to have you here joining in with the discussion, which is what it's all about

It's not a line is it? January is obviously not the best time to make signings, for a number of reasons. Doesn't mean it can't or won't happen, Ronaldo has made sure of that, but surely after a record summer spend it was widely accepted that January would be a no go.

Whether it is true or not isn't really the issue. Just because something is more difficult doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done. We have glaring holes in the sqaud that need filled. And need filled in January. Spend less time briefing the press and more time honing in on targets.

We’re briefing the press because we don’t have any money left

We signed Fred, Maguire, James, AWB, VDB, Telles, Sancho and Ronalod in the summer, and Bruno in the winter, so this horseshit line definitely checks out.

Couldn’t be a better time to sign if looking to the future and next season…which is how any good club should be run. If the same player you’d want in the summer comes up the winter….it’s obviously irrelevant.

Too many good signings happen in January to make such a stance a load of rubbish that one too.many united fans have accepted, most ambitious managers/clubs don't let a winter window put them off pushing to make their teams better

Needs a bump because this thread is relevant again.

Liverpool (another big club) getting another January bargain while United sit on their hands and wait to summer to sign someone for twice the price who is half as good

I repeat that January is the best time to sign top players for decent fees. The “clubs don’t want to let players go” line is old and no longer true

Looks as if the two clowns agree with you - they'll book another three week stay in a Barcelona hotel and do sod all
