The ‘Deputy Football Director’ position | 31.05.2022 - Andy O’Boyle appointed

Irrespective of qualifications, we've again appointed a mechanic in the middle of the race.

The club has steadily been reducing my optimism for this upcoming season for a few days now. I hope for the best but it's looking like another 'we'll do better next season' season coming for United.
So would you rather we didn’t hire somebody because it’s too late so what’s the point?

Just for clarity sake

Well, let's se if this works or that it turns out we've hired Danny Boyle! I suppose it's a plus that he once worked at Carrington and it's nice that he's a United fan (although, of course, so am I...). I just hope we aren't going to hard on "suits" and not anywhere at all on actual footballers

When should have the guy be appointed? Really dont understand where's the issue.

No issue with the guy since I haven't followed his career and he might be a great, good or shit appointment. He just won't make any difference in this window because he's not been working on it.

We should have got him in the winter, so we could be firing on all cylinders right now.

Basically, I feel we've given ourselves another 'free hit' season. Hopefully I'm wrong but this club has not given me reason to trust their judgment over the past 10 years, so I'll remain sceptical until proven otherwise.

How do you reduce something that never really existed?

Nice one, seems to have a wide variety of experience across different departments which will help him in taking some of the workload off Murtough.

I find it pretty encouraging that Murtough admitted the size of his job, realised he needed help and then got it. Simple things, but we've had too long a spell of not doing simple things at all levels.

It seems like a good appointment. I hope ten hag and him have a good working relationship.

He just won't make any difference in this window because he's not been working on it.

He won't be involved in recruitment activities, he is hired to take the load of Murtough', so Murtough can focus on the transfer window and recruitment

except he won’t work on window(from what we know) and will free up Murtough of other responsibilities so that he can focus on transfers.

On paper he looks like a good hire, so another encouraging step here.

Added to that he looks well on his way to being bald and thus adding to our growing repertoire of bald frauds

the rebald at united is well under way.

So his name is not Paul Mitchell so the caf hates him despite knowing nothing about him or what he brings to the table

The club could sign 5 players tomorrow and people would moan about the amount of paperwork involved

Yep, staggering how much football knowledge people seem to have - they know everything about every candidate and every role.

I've got a better idea.

Hire Conte, give him money, probably win the league - and then talk about all the positive changes you've made as a club after the fact and stop trying to sell PR bullshit.

I've got to say I'm encouraged by the moves coming out of the club this year.

Won't pretend I know what exactly is going on but at least it seems were looking to streamline and modernise the club after a decade of doing the same things and hoping for different results.

At least there seems to be a recognition of the fact that what we've been doing wasn't working and efforts are being taken to implement change.

I agree but I can't blame people for being worried considering the illogical nature of our decision make in the last decade.

Let's hope we're really getting our house in order.

Organisational restructuring requires some serious commitment on the part of Arnold. The organisation just grew organically under Fergie like him appointing his brother as the chief scout and there were others doing the same role -- when one person could do it all. Now we can professionalize it, and streamline it according to strategy rather than the fractured power bases that grew out of the power grab after Fergie retired.

Sorry, who was disliking the appointment as it pertains to him as a candidate?

All the posts in here seem to be of the opinion that he seems well qualified and can bring a lot to areas of weakness.

The re-org that we can do will be disrupted -- having to put out fires that Conte will create by threatening to leave every summer -- and then wanting things his way.

We seem to be back to the 'trust the process' phase of this forum.

Hopefully this time it works since it hasn't for 10 years. But continue preaching and lecturing me, that worked out great for the Ole believers.

I really don't understand the doom and gloom over our restructuring. Murtough's role is apparently too big so he's brought someone in to free up some of his time. We seem to be doing the right things on the restructuring side and we'll have to wait and see what the outcomes are.

On the last point, you can't have thought there was any way we'd have been challenging for titles next session, can you?

You mean like appointing Rangnick?

We've already done this with Mourinho. Club's looking at not repeating it's past mistakes.

This sounds promising. I'm more interested in hearing about things like this where we've actually taken action than the waffle yesterday about us wanting the best in class etc.

We need to move quickly to give ourselves the best chance next season. That includes player recruitment.

The interim manager? When did I mention that?

hiring a semi retired manager who had never managed at a top club was a huge mistake done by this new administration. One can add other stuff like insisting on Ole after the Liverpool game and not buying a CM during the January sales.

I don't believe hiring Mourinho was a mistake. Given what's gone on since with Ole and the dressing room I believe the mistake was trying to appease the players with weak mentality and not backing him.

I was talking about the restructuring job currently under way. You're bringing up the interim manager, who granted was a failure but not relevant, and something about Ole. As for January the club decided not to bring anyone in under an interim manager, which would have taken away from the not yet chosen full-time manager's budget. We'll see if that was a good decision or not but again not really relevant to my post.

I’m not lecturing you. Just telling you that you’re a negative bugger

So this frees up Murtough some more right? Paul Mitchell was never going to come in to run the ladies team and do a bunch of paper work for his boss. Murtough must really fancy himself to make something of this

Id hope he does fancy himself to get it right? If he didn’t it would be worrying

Why can some not see we are trying to rebuild the football club, instead of wanting short term solutions like in the past.

Yeah I’d hope so also, but I would also hope that he was just marginalised under Woodward and we’ll get more joined up thinking moving forward, otherwise he’s made himself incredibly easy to replace.
