Tennis 2021

Norrie is giving Dimitrov a good going over at the moment. Some going if he can get to an IW final. The bloke is wringing every last drop out. Unless we've all got it wrong and underestimated his ceiling. It's a great story either way.

Incredible season for him. Not looked at the race to Turin, but he's surely in with a shot.

He's shooting himself in the foot. The AO is his best slam and he would probably be the favourite there to break the all time record.

There are no guarantees in tennis (or sports in general). You have to maximize your chances and take advantage of every opportunity you have. If he ends up not breaking the all time mark, this could be something he looks back on with regret.

Nadal will be back, and although he lost last year, I would still back him over Djokovic at the French, if they faced each other.

Because he isn't vaccinated?
That's what we're assuming. He said he doesn't want to reveal his vaccination status so there is a possibility he is vaccinated but early on in the pandemic he said he was anti-vax and has had plenty of rhetoric indicating that he's not keen on being vaccinated.

It’s absolutely absurd that these tournaments are often zero tolerance for unvaccinated fans yet allowing unvaccinated players turn up and play. Zero sympathy for Djokovic or any player who wants to play without being vaccinated. There’s often a cost to deeply held beliefs.

Alcaraz is going to be some player (and he's already pretty good now). Not sure if I've seen a teenager hit the ball as hard as he does.

Seems to have a great attitude as well. Sinner is also going to get better and better.

Murray getting a win against Sinner will give him massive amounts of confidence. It's incredible just to see him out on court hitting the balls tbh.

Question for him is now sustaining that level.

Here is a crazy stat for you. If Medvedev had won against Djoko in Paris he would have become the first player ever to be .500 against Djokovic after their first ten meetings.

Erm
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djokovic–Federer_rivalry

Didn't Federer win 7 of their first 10

And so did Nadal
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djokovic–Nadal_rivalry

So I'm not sure of the significance if medvev would have been 5 and 5

More impressive is that I believe there is no player in the world who novak has played 3 times or more that he does not hold the advantage in head to head

https://www.ultimatetennisstatistics.com/playerProfile?playerId=4920&tab=rivalries&h2h=1&matches=3

That said he's lost 2 out of 2 to kyrigos I think so he would of course have the upper hand ober novak if they played three times

Sorry I misheard the stat.

The actual record is Medvedev would have become the only player to have played Novak ten or more times and have an even win percentage against him.

So not the first ten matches like I thought just currently out of everyone who he's played 10 or more times, he has a winning record against everyone. Medvedev had the chance in Paris to be that exception.

Going by the site you linked the three people with the better head to head against Novak are Fernando Gonzalez and Karlovic with 2 wins and 1 loss out of three. Andy Roddick is the last guy on the list with a 5-4 h2h against Novak which he will have forever.

Last night's match between Shapo and FAA was brilliant. What a sexy backhand when it's clicking from Shapo. Plays Tommy Paul in the final

ATP finals starting tomorrow. Group 1 is Djoko, Rublev, Tsisipas and Ruud. Group 2 is Medvedev, Berretini, Zverev and Hurkacz.

Last tournament of season , should be a good one.

It looks like the WTA Finals are going very nicely in Guadalajara, with the local fans embracing the tournament. Also the fast surface helps. Given that the serve is far less dominant in women's tennis compared to men's, I've always thought that women's tennis has been far better to watch on faster surfaces than slower ones.

I've never understood the criticism that modern day women's tennis receives for being a 'random mess', when there is far greater depth than ever before.

In the 80s and 90s, there was basically zero depth in women's tennis outside the WTA top 10 or top 20 at best. The early round women's matches at grand slams were basically a complete joke, and the tournaments only really got underway from the quarter-final stage (or sometimes even the semi-final stage). Even in the early 00s which was a golden era for women's tennis, the WTA top 10 was stacked but there still wasn't a great deal of depth outside the top 20. These days the standard of players ranked from 21 downwards is vastly superior to all previous eras.

In men's tennis on the other hand, there has always been strong depth in the top 100 (at least) through the open era, with the likes of Laver, Borg and Connors facing plenty of tough matches in the early rounds of grand slams. I'd actually argue that there was stronger depth in the ATP top 100, 20 or even 30 years ago than there is now.

Good match to kick things off between Medvedev and Huby with the Russian victorious in three. In the second match great first set between Zverev and Berretini which the German won but then the Italian had to retire with an abdominal injury in the second set.

Zverev vs Medvedev going into a third set. High level tennis. Great match. Medvedev takes it in a close 3rd set tie break

A thread(erer) for those that might be interested:

It doesn't sound good for him, as far as his tennis career is concerned. I think at best we'll see him return at the Laver Cup and possibly Basel next year before calling it quits.

Basically he's gonna miss next years Wimbledon and probably only be back late 2022. Hopefully we get one more Fed Wimbledon though. Don't want his last set to be that bagel against Huby.

Tsisipas has pulled out as well so we get Ruud vs Norrie tonight. Looking like another Djokovic vs Medvedev final.

She's hanging out and playing tennis with the Panchen Lama. :nervous::(

I saw the Naomi Osaka tweet the other day and had no idea who she is, but after reading about the backstory and her disappearance, it's incredibly worrying. And this is a relatively high profile athlete who's just disappeared and now has the Chinese state media claiming she's totally fine.

It's as dodgy as dodgy gets in terms of news. When has any state media ever said anything that could be trusted?!

It's extremely worrying and the international community should be monitoring this very closely and ensuring that better proof of her safety is received ASAP.

This Peng Shuai stuff is awful. I was talking to a friend from China the other day and they were telling me some stuff that I don’t even want to post on here as I’m afraid that they’d be watching them if they ever chose to go back again.
