Tennis 2020

Out of curiosity, does anyone know who was sitting above the line judge in the stands? Considering he looked in that general direction, could he have been almost expressing his irritation to someone known to him by bunting the ball in their general direction. It obviously doesn’t matter either way but it just looked slightly odd, considering he obviously wasn’t trying to hit the line judge.

Djokovic stepping into every pile of shit in his path since the pandemic started. What a tosser.

Djokovic strikes me as the least likable among the 3 GOATs. I hope he doesn't end with the most Grand Slams.

Sorry, I don’t know much about tennis... why is this grounds for disqualification? It doesn’t even look like he hit her on purpose. Or is it because he has previous when it comes to throwing balls/rackets?

Just a slight detour for the goat.

Hope Ćorić could surprise and win it all. Or Russians.
I suspect you’re right. It’ll be enormously frustrating for him, though. Based upon what he’s been saying, I fully believe he felt he’d end the summer on 19 Slams and would be rocking up to the Aussie to tie the record. And he wouldn’t be human if he hadn’t given even a moment’s thought to not winning the French - worse again if Nadal were to win it - and then being a hostage to fortune in terms of the Aussie going ahead and him winning it. For all the longevity of the big 3, he won’t feel comfortable assuming he can pick up the 4 or 5 slams he needs at 36 or 37.

It’s most likely just a slightly delay to the coronation, sure, but there’s a slight chance it could be more than that.

Because those are the rules. You take a risk when you hit the ball away in frustration. If you hit someone, you're out.

According to people who watch more tennis than me, it's a miracle that it took this long for Djokovic to actually hit someone, as he's done this many times before.

If a player injures an official, it`s an automatic disqualification (she was injured, even if she didn`t need "hospitalization"). Of course it wasn`t intentional but it was a needless risk since he didn`t have to smash a ball away in frustration.

I see. Thanks guys.

Clip from a couple of weeks ago. Any idea why this was treated differently.

Also seems Djokovic has skipped his post match press conference.

That probably should have been a default as I don't think it matters whether it's a spectator, cameraman or line judge. I'm not sure why it wasn't though as the rules seem to be relatively clear.

It's worth noting that what happened yesterday is not the first time a default has been applied for this reason. Even Henman had one at Wimbledon for accidently hitting a ball-girl.

The umpire back then pretty much said it all. When Henman wanted to argue against his disqualification, the ump basically just shrugged his shoulders and said: "You hit the ball in anger." And that was that. It's like picking up a rock on the beach and blindly throwing it in anger. Nobody cares if it lands in the water, but you better expect trouble if it hits a person by accident.

That is actually a perfect analogy.

Djokovic has a history of doing stupid shite like that. About time it got to him.

It doesn't matter if it is intentional or not, when you hit/injure someone out of vent you get disqualified, rules are strict about that and easy to follow.

Shame of course due to all things considered this year and for the tournament itself, bu should serve a lesson for him.

I think you're right, he just got lucky.

Today's day session on Ashe looks exciting, Sakkari vs Serena and FAA vs Thiem.

Post a clip of someone hammering a tennis ball into your throat so we can be sure.
:lol:Interesting he was getting pissy beforehand. Feels a bit unlucky tbh, but massive chance to catch up on Federer blown.

She was being dramatic. It probably hurt obviously but that much? She milked it as hard as she possibly could.

When you unexpectedly, as in out of nowhere, get hit hard by a tennis ball in the throat hitting the deck is a perfectly natural reaction. I assumed you were joking, Christ.

He's so talented but also such a petulant child. Can't believe he'll one day have the most slam titles.

I went off him really early with his serve toss shenanigans. That was obviously so unsporting even if at the time it was permitted.

Yesterday he absolutely slammed a ball earlier into the ad boards. Tiny mishit and that could have done actual damage.

I cant believe anyone is defending him or accusing the line judge. What a world we live in.

He's very precious about Djokovic it seems. Everyone's got it in for him apparently

Who knew the SAG had representation on the Caf!

I mean, come on. There are certain hits that are very likely to land people on the deck, especially when it's unexpected: groin, solar plexus, kidneys, throat.

Surely you've seen these things hundreds of times before, I just don't believe you. The feeling of a direct hit to the throat is excruciatingly uncomfortable, it's almost indescribable.

I don't find Djokovic any less likeable than the other two to be honest. He has a bit of Roy Keane in him, but that should come as no surprise to anyone given the competitive nature of being the best.

I can take or leave Djokovic really. Great player obviously but I don’t really care about him that much. I’m obviously just being tongue in cheek.

I’ve been hit in the neck playing tennis before and still genuinely believe she’s milking it. He basically flicked it at her and she’s gone down like Willem Dafoe in Platoon.

Definitely was unintentional and I wouldn't character assassinate Djokovic over a small incident. But rules are rules. Even if it seems excessive tennis isn't football and is indeed to be a more gentlemanly/womanly sport. It was reckless from Djokovic who has to reign in his emotions better.

Fixed

Have you played tennis before? If the ball hits you on the throat from that distance it wouldn’t be too pleasant, especially if you don’t expect it.
I’ve been hit in the face playing tennis multiple times. In the neck once too. It hurt but it was just like you said, not pleasant that’s it. I didn’t need the air ambulance to carry me away.

Why hasn't the woman apologized yet? Who does she think she is?

Anything hitting you with any kind of force in the neck has a good chance of making you panic.

Wow, tough guy

neck and throat are entirely different things. Also bear in mind that it was a woman. Graphite rackets tend to generate a lot of velocity and the ball was almost on the rise.
I’ve 250 pound men crumble when hit in the throat. Probably one of the most dangerous place be hit.

I’m just giving my personal experience as I was asked if I’ve played tennis before. I have and I wasn’t very good so I got hit on multiple occasions, particularly if I played doubles.

I took a forehand in the throat close to the net once and it hurt but we all had a good laugh that I couldn’t get out the way and kept playing. I was fine. This isn’t some macho thing either it just genuinely wasn’t that bad. I’m only a small guy and definitely not “tough”.

I personally think she overreacted but if people think otherwise I’m not going to waste any more time arguing because it’s pointless.

Anyone watching Williams and Sakkari? This match is so damn good. The most I've been engaged in a match since the Open started and it comes from the ladies..

Even pironkova cornet is excellent. The level of ball striking on WTA side on these great courts is amazing to watch

On the Djokovic DF, one of the lads from the Uni tennis team messaged me last night reminding me of the time I got defaulted for hitting the umpire in the face, which until he mentioned it I had absolutely no recollection of. I missed a volley, lost my head and drilled the ball into the net. Except I wasn't that accurate and it hit the top of the net post and went into the umpire's face. He remembers me angrily making the argument that I shouldn't have been disqualified as the net poles were outside the tramlines even though it was a singles match and I wouldn't have hit the pole normally. What an awful tit. Even more ridiculously I was something like 6-2, 5-2 up, which makes me even more of a helmet.
