Tennis 2016

My boy Novak owes no one an apology for his luck. Get out of here with those vibes. My mans done lost 8 Grand Slam finals, 8! Remember he could hardly run Wimbledon 2013 final after Del Potro took him to 5 in the semi. Go ahead Nole, do your thing.

He also got lucky when won his first slam, with Federer having glandular fever and Rafa being knocked out by an inspired Tsonga ;)

Props to her. Can't think of anyone who defeated both the William sisters back to back.
Pliskova is 4th player to do so (not back to back, in same tournament).

Edit: 8th overall. 9 times it has happened. 4 times in slams, including Pliskova. Clijsters did it twice.

I'm going tomorrow for the semis.

Wanted to see Fed, then wanted to see Del Po but I'm happy-ish with Djokovic, Wawrinka and Nishikori. I've actually seen Monfils play before.

How easy/what is the process for getting tickets? I want to go to the US Open one year

This Open trowing up too many funky results to be trusted, seemingly does that every other year. Watch this space. We can be here all day discussing who got lucky when.

In Germany it is "celebrated" that now Kerber is the first no. 1 (or will be from Monday on) since Steffi Graf.

Buying them straight from the US Open is hard as they get sold out in seconds (even if you try pre-sales.) Buying them second hand from ticketmaster or stubhub is easy.

Wow Monfils deliberately with disrespectful body language and play style and it's actually working, Djoker with a double error conceding the break.

Pretty weird match so far. Can't see anything other than a straight sets win for Djokovic though. Only way he doesn't win the whole thing is if Stanimal shows up - considering he hasn't been seen since last year I won't hold my breath.

And it can be. As an American, it's tough to see Serena being eliminated, but Kerber would be a worthy winner and has been the best player in 2016. She's simply very good and the best thing that has happened to German tennis in a long time.

Some say her rise is a result of the competition being eliminated (Sharapova, Azarenka), but I think she has simply improved and depending on Serena's health and decline, she could be the number one for some time.

If Djokovic wins this it will be his 13th grand slam. With Federer and Nadal way past it, it is difficult to see other players stop him in breaking Fed's record of grand slams.

Stan seems to show up once in a year and play very good tennis. It's going to be a tough final. Should Novak take the US and AUS open, he has a good chance of at least equalling Fed's record.

Hope Stanimal does it:)

Monfils and Nishikori really disappointing - especially Monfils - all that talent, but just don't have the mentality to step up when its needed.
Monfils clowning around for the first 2 sets and only decides to compete when it's too late:rolleyes: Very very disappointing...

Honestly believe Stan is the last person Novak would want to play in the final.

of course he is. Novak would easily dispose tired Murray or tired Nishikori, not to mention he knows how to play against them. it's different story with Stan. Novak must be thinking about that RG final now.

Murray was well below his best against Nishikori and I think he'd have beaten Wawrinka. It does mean though that he won't have to suffer another GS final to Djok. I'd say the odds in the final are 80-20 in favour of Djok, there's a small chance the unstoppable Wawrinka will show up where he just beats anyone you put him in front of him but it's really hard to see past a Djok win.

Honestly believe Stan is the last person Novak would want to play in the final.

He was certainly the only player in the semi finals who could beat Djokovic even if Djok plays his best or close to his best level. Nishikori and Monfils are just fodder to Djok and even Murray can't get near a top form Djok.

I don't think Novak will be thinking about last year's RG too much. He's won the RG since, so there's no pressure really. Also, Novak beat Stan comfortably in their last two masters matches. If he doesn't have issues with his shoulders/ left wrist, I think he should beat Stan in 4 sets.

Djokovic is dominant in the H2H, but when it comes to the slams it's a different story.

They've played 5 times at slams. Novak is 3-2, however his three wins have all been in five sets.

2013 Australian open - Djokovic won 12-10 in the fifth
2013 US open - Djokovic won 6-4 in the fifth
2014 Australian open - Stan won 9-7 in the fifth
2015 Australina open - Novak 6-0 in the fifth
2015 French open - Stan won in 4.

Those two grueling encounters could have went either way, Stan is the last person Novak wants to play in a slam final. He knows Wawrinka can bully him off court if on form.

Jamie Murray and his partner just won the doubles title!

the point was not in RG itself, but in level of play that stunned Novak that day. Nishikori and Murray aren't capable of surprising Djokovic like Waw can when he's on fire and if he is, Novak will struggle. I know he isn't the most consistent performer, but he does turn up in occasions like these.

I actually don't think Novak was stunned that day. Wawrinka played great tennis, dispatched Federer in three and Tsonga in four sets while Novak finally overcome Nadal in four and then Murray in five sets over two days. Novak just looked mentally worn out in the last two sets and Wawrinka's well deserved win was not really that of a surprise, I think.

Whereas now I don't think there is any pressure on Novak whatsoever. If he finished his career today he'd still have a phenomenal career. Every slam he wins after the RG I think is just a 'bonus'.

Poor service game at the end there from Pliskova but she did well to get back into the match after that first set. Great year for Kerber.

Well a missed set point and Stan held. Novak goes to serve for the set, saves two break points but double faults to put it back on serve. 5-4. Stan still serving to stay in the set

some brutal points from both. finals are always better to watch when Murray isn't involved.

Stan takes it 6-4. Such an up and down match this with so many breaks. Djoko will take this in 5 imo.

Stan saves 3 BP and then breaks Djoko. They're both struggling to hold big time.
