'tis a silly place
Assuming Rio and Ryan are fit:

-------------- Carroll --------------
Phil --- Blanc --- Rio --- Silvestre
Becks --- Butt --- Keane --- Giggs
----------- Ruud --- Ole -----------

that would be my choice, with the exception of Blanc i would prefer to see O'Shea, but we know SAF is going to try and play Veron

Ferguson said Butt will definately play the start of the season. I think its possible we will see 451 with no Solskjaer again. A tough game in London could tempt SAF to go with the more defensive option. Therefore the team will either be the team above, or this team imo:

-------------- Carroll --------------
Phil --- Blanc --- Rio --- Silvestre
Becks - Butt - Keane - Veron - Giggs
-------------- Ruud --------------

Chelseas team is strong in midfield and defence so playing ole would only be beneficial to us. We all know SAF doesnt change his team selection due to a good performance as a sub.

I think this will be the formation against Chelsea. I still prefer to O'Shea in the line-up, though.

Or how about something really drastic Rio Blanc and O'Shea in the back, 6 in midfield(so we can fit everyone in, and ruud up front. :) ;)

Something like:
-------------Carroll----------
---O'Shea-----Rio-------Mickey
---------Butt-----Keane-------
---Becks---------------Giggs--
-------------Veron------------
-------------Scholes----------
-------------Ruud-------------
:) ;)

BTW heres a list of players playing on Friday having played internationals on Wednesday, courtesy of RedNews. Ruud, Silvestre and Ole for us. Desailly, Petit, Gudjohnsen, Gronkjaer, Stanic for Chelsea. Giggs pulled out of the squad. Bloody Sky. Its a conspiracy to get all our players tired. ;)

Coz I think Gudjohnsen and Haselbaink are too fast for Blanc. And I believe O'Shea will do the job just fine.

No Blanc too? ;) ;)
Seriously, the first 2 games didn't see the best from him.

Hasselbaink fast ? Blanc with Butt or Keane can take care of Jimmy-Floyd by keeping him as far away from the area as possible. Rio can take Gudjohnsen. I dont think Ferguson will drop Blanc.

I think so too. O'Shea will be benched despite his encouraging performance.

No body but O'Shea did catch my eye twice. ;)

Thats interesting. You say Blanc doesnt deserve his place in the team because he hasnt played as well as he can in the first games of the season, yet you admit nobody has played to their best. John may have impressed but he has a long way to go before he displaces Larry from the team.

I didn't say Blanc does not deserve to start. I just prefer to see Rio-O'Shea partnership right now rather than next season. At least with this partnership, failed offside traps or counter attacks by the opponent don't scare the hell out of me. He will continue to struggle against pacey strikers and that is the weakness our rivals will expose this season.

True. But then if Rio takes the pacy Striker and Blanc looks after the target-man, I dont see any harm. I do expect Rio and John to be the first-choice pairing by Christmas though.

Using this formation will give the opponents a WIDE gap between Becks/Giggs and Veron/Scholes/Ruud. SAF knows what he's doing...

It wasn't that long ago we slaughtered Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

What was the team/formation that day?

I've thought for awhile that 3 at the back would solve SAF's midfield and striking headache I'd like to see him try it at home in the League.

O'Shea has made a great start but he will know that Rio and Blanc will start when fit. If our aging French hippy continues to lung at players in the box (ala WBA) it wont be long before OShea takes over!

Its a shame that OShea and Ole, our two stars so far, will almost certainly be dropped to the bench for Friday's game.

Its going to be tough. After watching our two opening matches Chelsea certainly wont be too scared to have a go at us :(

My biggest frustration. It isn't about winning or losing, it's about playing well - and surely it isn't too much to expect that our in-form players should be in the side?

Carroll
P.Neville,O'Shea,Ferdinand,Silvestre
Beckham,Keane,Scholes,Giggs
Van Nistelrooy,Solskjaer

(For me this should be the team if they are all fit. But i expect SAF to go with Blanc. I think Veron was great agaist WBA but Scholes on his day can play that role better. Also, he may not play Solskjaer, which is a big shame cos RVN is not the same player on his own up front. The sooner we sign Escude the better, and Silvestre will be sitting on the bench, how can giggs make those great runs when Silvestre is futher up the field than him!? He is nervous on the ball and gives the ball away to much! )

i'd like to see us play 5 in the midfield versus Chelsea.. that leaves either ole or ruud on the bench..

i doubt whether Alex will leave Ruud out so.......

altho..on current form Ole deserves a place in the team.. ahead of RVN.

there i've said it ;)

1. 4-4-2 will get us whipped us usual

2. 4-3-3 would be bet
but line up:
Caroll

Phil Neville Rio Blanc Silvestre

Butt
Keane Veron

Ole Ruud Scholes

With Becks and Giggs on the bench.
That would give us better threat and the kick up the back side BEx and Giggsy need for they are becomming pathetic. Besides, this same system gave us a 3-0 win at the Bridge. Why change a winning combination :D :D :D :D :D

You can't leave RVN out, you have to play him up with Ole. Its who we play in the midfield we should be talking about!

2. 4-3-3

What's wrong with the 442?!

We won the treble with it! :D

--------------- Barthez ---------------
G Neville --- Brown - Blanc --- Silvestre
---- Butt ---- Fortune ---- Scholes ----
------------------ Giggs ------------------
---- Solskjaer --- v Nistelrooy ----------

That was the time and I think the formation was something like that. ;)

SAF: "The injuries have been a problem but hopefully Rio will be back this week, which will help, and Gary is about three weeks away. We are assessing the situation but the question is who do you go and buy to keep the strength of the squad up. The good players have all gone by now and this is totally the wrong time to be looking around."

-------------- Carroll --------------
Phil --- Blanc --- Rio --- Silvestre
Becks --- Butt --- Keane --- Scholes
----------- Ruud --- Ole -----------

-------------- Carroll --------------
Phil --- Blanc --- Rio --- Silvestre
Becks - Butt - Keane - Veron - Giggs
-------------- Ruud --------------

I think this is the team we're going to see.

The one I'd like to see is Ruud/Ole up front with Becks, Keane and Giggs and either Butt/Veron/or Scholes. I think any one of the 3 could do the job for us. I'm more concerned about having 2 strikers than I am about which of the 3 plays in midfield.

I'd probably also prefer O'Shea to Blanc. That's a close call though. O'Shea has the pace and Blanc has the experience. I'd be pretty surprised if Blanc didn't start though.

Here's a revamped edition of my earlier formation
----------Carroll-------------
O'Shea-----Rio----------Mickey
-----------Butt---------------
------------------------------
Becks------Keane--------Giggs-
-----------Veron--------------
------Ruud-------Ole----------

Why no Giggs ? BTW Sinders, are you serious with that 3-5-2 formation ?

Yes I'm serious. Butt can support the back 3 and also play in a defensive midfield role. The other 4 in midfield would line up in a diamond formation, and that would leave Veron with creative space, and it would also leave room for Ole to support RVN.3-5-2, more like a 3-1-4-2.

No chance. We have already tinkled with the formations enough. Even so, what are the chances of SAF playing such a different formation in such a big game ? You gonna be able to watch it on Friday Sindy ? ;)

Fine with me. It gives Veron his creative space. Butt and Keane can easily support the back 3.
