Targettable Full backs

Right-back: Soares, Cancelo, Mario Fernandes, Santiago Arias, Fabinho, Tete, A. Toure
Left-back: R. Pereira, Hector, Kongolo, Riedewald

Were just about to suggest Kongolo. His contract is up in 2017. He is young, versatile and appear to be quite a prospect.

I'd rather just buy a center back or two which we actually need even if everyone is fit. That would free up Blind to move to left back with CBJ as backup and Darmian to right back with Jones as backup and then when everyone is fit we don't have to try to fit in two possible first choice left and right backs.

What about Debuchy? Seems desperate to get out of Arsenal and Arsenal probably don't think of us as competition right now anyway lol.

So, I think there are 3 options here for us:-

Stop gap left back so Shaw returns next season and this player leaves:
Evra
Cole

1st choice right back so Darmian plays LB this season and is back up for both full back positions long term:
Coleman
Fabinho

Buy a centre back for long term partner of Stones and play Blind at LB for the rest of the season and then assume Mr Versatile role:
Stones
Laporte

I'd personally go all out for John Stones - we'd have the England CB partnership for the next 10 years and he compliments Smalling very well (he can actually pass the ball!).

Buy A CB now and move Blind to LB, Darmian to RB. It makes too much sense so it won't be done.

I'd sign both of them. Stones can play RCB and RB and Laporte LCB and LB. Jones can go and Smalling can takes his chances.

Agreed on option 3 but that's a summer transfer... option 1 is most realistic but I think we'll sign a versatile back up at full back

Evra and Andy Robertson best shouts for left back. Fabinho best shout for right back.

Really given the state of play, with Darmian and Jones picking up injuries every other week, we should be bringing in both a right and left back.

Having Fabinho vs Darmian and Robertson vs Shaw next season would be a very good position to be in.

When was the last season we didn't have an injury crisis in defence? Was it 5 or 6 years ago that we put out a back four with Carrick and Fletcher in it for a Champions League match? I feel like we've had one at least once a year since then.

Ben Chilwell, who is on loan at Huddersfield Town from Leicester... looks like a decent prospect

De Sciglio at milan is renowned for being able to play on either flank. perfect age range at 23, and milan dont have the muscle to turn down english currency. would add serious competition to both spots and when shaw is available he would likely battle it out with darmian for the rb place.

it's a tricky one, as you don't want to be buying someone that's too good on the left, as Shaw will hopefully be back good as new April onwards.

But you can't get someone too average, as using youth teamers would make more sense.

Awkward one.

Such an arse Valencia and Young both out! When is Valencia even back?!

Is LvG making this a full back issue, rather than a CB issue to try and absolve himself of any blame with the squad planning?

Surely if we had bought the CB in the summer that everyone was screaming for then we wouldn't be so desperate now, Afterall Young was never really supposed to be a full back anyway, and CBJ is just a bonus, so he's had luck there already.

Simplest option would be Darmian RB, Blind LB, and a new CB, as it would have been since Shaw got injured.

Definitely need a new centreback because, given Carrick's declining fitness, we're an injury to Blind/Smalling away from seeing Fellaini there.

:nervous:

Stones and put Blind and Darmain at either full back?

Might make more sense to use Blind at LB and target a better CB.

Definitely:

1. Shaw is great
2. Blind's future is as a backup at LB, LCB and DM, being a more technically adept O'Shea/Phil Neville
3. We need an LCB to form a long-term partnership with Smalling

So, why not just pay a bit more and buy whoever it is we want at LCB, like Laporte or Stones or Marquinhos? The only reason I could see not to is if Guardiola is coming, since I think he'd see Schneiderlin as a CB considering what he's done with Javi Martinez and Mascherano and Schneiderlin being big, fast, technically a bit below average for a CM for a top 3 team in Europe but pretty good at hitting long, raking Boateng-esque balls.

But it's unlikely Guardiola is coming and even if he does and moves Schneiderlin back, we could just sell Jones or Rojo.

TLDR: Just sign the LCB and let Blind/CBJ play LB for the rest of the year.

In case we need a new right back, Fabinho could be a good option. To cover Shaw, we have Rojo, Blind, Darmian and CBJ (even Young).

There are good defenders to consider such as Stones, Laporte, Gimenez, Marquinhos, Mustafi, Hummels, etc. So our defense could be like this next season:

RB/Darmian - Smalling/Jones - CB/Blind - Shaw/Rojo

Should've gone for Cashley for the rest of the season.
Would be easy to just Photoshop him next to the rest of the team in the team photo too.

Dominic Iorfa is a great young English right back at Wolves who I think we should look at.

I'm surprised none of the media have made a meal out of LvG saying he wants a full back this window. I thought it would have been a news headline.

They usually fall over themselves when we are looking to sign anyone

Jenkinson? West Ham signed that RB. Get him on loan or on the cheap for a short term solution

We were linked with Mendy of Marseille here and there but he signed a new deal alongside Michy Batshauyi couple weeks back. Bit of a bummer.

It was against Fulham too in the league.

We got hammered 3-0.

We always need depth. Our defense is always plagued by injury.
